What does everyone think about the possibility of having PC and console platorms run the same multiplayer? By that I mean having PC users play against console users.

Not to mention the weaker capabilities of the consoles would (again) hold back the potential of a PC version, especially cross-platform releases.
Let's put it like this: I disbelieve the 360 or PS3 can do the full fledged bells and whistles of a PC version of BF3. I'm not talking high-octane graphics. I'm talking 64 player, 32 vs 32, huge maps, and the full scope of infantry and vehicle combat. Unless the PC version gets nerfed to hell, which I'm not in favor of.
Another example: The "Total War" strategy games. In multiplayer, I seriously, SERIOUSLY doubt the consoles can do a battle like the Total War games can in their scope, number of different troops with independent animations, etc. I absolutely even doubt the consoles can even do 2002's Rome Total War in high settings. So in multiplayer, things will again be held back to cater to the limiations of a console.
Of course, this hasn't stopped the majority of developers being half-assed with their PC versions of a game anyways. The majority prefer to put the most minimal effort in the PC version and thereby limit the potential of the platform.
Speaking of FPS: Those hand controllers don't hold a candle to the mouse & keyboard. It's so much faster, intuitive, and being able to do far more in a short timespan. How are they going to even the field with console players? Lame auto-aim? LOL! Sure, you may have the keyboard & mouse accesories, but I never see any console owners have them. I'll guarantee you the numbers are miniscule. Contrast this to essentially 100% with the PC users and FPS gamers of the platform.
Edit to add: I don't mind the idea of crossplatform multiplayer, as long as it does not hold back my platform of choice, the PC. I've seen enough horrid excuses for a PC version of crossplatform releases. The standardization and hard-set specs of the consoles maybe its greatest strength, but they're also to me, it's greatest limiting factor. No chance to improve performance, no matter how much you want.
"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." Final Fantasy 11. It pretty much tried this. Sure it works, but its going to likely cause trouble for PC players to make it fair. If you want them to be efficient, your going to give one person an advantage (likely the pc gamer) which tends to not be a good thing.
So long as the PC version isn't lobotomized to match it's console counterpart, I'd be fine with it. Of course, it would make PvP feel like it was half populated with AI mobs, but ah well. They'd still pad our kill tallies.
I dont want my gameplay runied becuse of the consle.
There was a study done by EA games not to long back that put Console & PC gamers on the same servers for internal testing to see IF it was a good marketing strategy to persue. Needless to say, EA themselves claim that the PC players stomped the Console players SO HARD that they could NOT in any conceivable way, without giving console gamers auto-aim assist to ungodly levels to balance the odds, put PC & Console on the same game network.
That being said, consoles will never be as powerful as PC gaming computers. They simply will evolve into portable computers, and will cease to be consoles.

Having a different opinion must mean you're a troll.
In some genres I think it would be acceptable. I'm not so sure if MMORPGs would work well this way.
I would think the PC version would have to have such a restricted UI in order to make gameplay fair, that it would feel like playing a console game on the PC.
pretty much everything that needs to be said has been.
putting PC and Console players in the same server against each other would be an abortion. The PC version would need to be severely hampered to make it "fair" to console players in ANY game.
Consoles are too limiting and just don't have the power of a good PC.
And if they ever did become equal..as someone said...the console wouldn't really be a console anymore really.
EDIT - the "most fair" they could make it would be a turn-based game...but even then...the console version couldn't handle all the raw computing power the PC would be able too..so it would still be "dumbed down" to consoles...so even then it still fails.
You would need 2 different UI's to make this work properly.
Consoles have a stricter network system. Plus cross-platform gameplay can be terrible for a FPS.
Let's face it, PC shooters = Hardcore. For console shooters, hitboxes are quite large to give leighway for thumbstick aiming. PC shooters hitboxes are insanely smaller. If you put console vs PC. If the hitboxes are larger; PC games will faceroll consoles. Make hitboxes small like PC's; Consoles will compain the game's broken and they can't hit anything.
It just isn't going to work out.. (This is just for shooters, any other genre will work amazingly.)
