The creadit card note is much too small! I downloaded half the game until I realised that it needs a credit card to test the game.

There is a small note on the bottom of the news site and one in the forum. Unfortunately the link to the trial is over the note and on the install steps page is no comment about the need of a credit card.

I believe you have missunderstood the definition of the word FREE....

Not imprisoned or enslaved; being at liberty.
Not controlled by obligation or the will of another
Not affected or restricted by a given condition or circumstance
    Unobstructed; clear
In a free manner; without restraint
To remove obstructions or entanglements from

Somehow the need for my credit card number seems to violate the conditions under which something may be deemed free. If I try the game and like it then I would be more than happy to give them my credit card number because at that point I wish to subscribe to their game.

I am rather tired of seeing all of these "free" trials that require me to hand over my credit card number and threaten to charge me if I do not do the legwork it takes to cancel (which can sometimes be a considerable undertaking).

This is a great game but be aware that people will gank you no matter what.  They don't care that you're lvl 20 and they're lvl 75.  There are people that constantly scout out the "noob" areas and pk the lowbies.  If you can find a good guild early you'll be ok but if not you're not going to have much fun.  If you like to constantly PvP, even when you don't feel like it, this game is for you.

Planetside has it right. You download the game, they give you a trial code, you play for 7 days and after that your account gets frozen. No credit card needed, no cancelling either.

I don't mind giving my credit card number though, no skin off my ass. I always remember to cancel on time.image

And 20 days is a damn generous trial period....

I've done this trial a few times.  They never bill you unless you choose to buy the game.  After your trial ends, your account will simply be inactive unless you purchase the game.

I bought this game when it first came out(only did the trials to see how things had progressed).  This was one of the best PvP MMORPGs.  Completely open PvP so there will be gankers, but if you get into a good guild, the game becomes very fun.  You have alot of control over how your character developes.  You decide how many points(earn as you level) to put into each attribute as well as skills, so if you are new to it, you may screw up your first character.  I think they have ways to respec points now though.  The PvE in this game is pretty dull, but you level pretty quickly.  The game has some very cool features such as building/sieging cities and flying.  Downside is the interface isn't that great and takes some time to get used to.  Large battles get very laggy.  Not many people play anymore.

Game had some great ideas, but a buggy launch drove many of the players away.  I'd really like to see them make Shadowbane 2 with a better interface and graphics.

You also forgot to add that you have to live in USA or Canada to join this free trial, since only those countries are allowed on the billing screen where you select your credit card.

    This sucks!

Officialy - trial is only for USA and Canada, but u can play from other caountries too ;)

BTW: For me this game is a crap.

That description sounds like ingame stuff. Open combat = free will system.

The credit card is to valadate AGE. All the kids can stay in other games.

20 days is to short to get a feel of shadowbane anyway. Its Play to Crush. You need to get in a guild or nation, and go take mines, kill people, try politics, and most of all, crush your enemy (seige, banes, etc). You cant squeeze that into 20 days.

This game isn't for everyone.  I would definetly recommend trying it if you've never played before.  If you have played before don't bother.

I put up a new player guide on the Shadowbane General forums on this site.

I'll jump in and agree that a free trial should definitely not require a credit card. There are ways to make sure that the game won't run past 20 days without using a credit card. Honestly, in this day and age of stealing identities and financial information, asking for someone's credit card # is putting them at too much of a risk to even want to try and play the game...no matter how good it may be. I know that I won't put my CC# in for a free trial. I've already had to have my card replaced once because of someone online getting the number. I won't be doing that again.

As far as the credit card is concerned, let me clarify a few things:

    - Your credit card is only being used as a form of age verification. Nothing will be charged to your credit card for playing the Free Trial.

    - At the end of the Free Trial you will no longer be able to login and play Shadowbane unless you convert to a paying subscriber. To convert to a paying subscriber, you will need to either purchase a retail copy of Shadowbane or purchase a CD Key online from ubi.com.

I point out the latter to show that no charges will be made to your credit card unless you choose to convert.

For those of you who do try the Free Trial, I would recommend reading the Getting Started Guide on Shadowbania.
