so then all the chuck norris jokes and immaturity really is from older people then eh?
Ditto. I'll be turning 53 this month, and I don't plan on giving up gaming anytime soon. It wouldn't surprise me if there were some 60+ gamers out there.

It was calculated based on inferences from the content of global chat.

Actually, the results to date appear to be similar to what I expected. It's all based on when the people started playing. Anyone who was in College when D&D came out is now in their mid-50s, and the strength of the PnP RPing came in the early-mid 80s. I've always found that these generations were more heavily represented in MMORPGs. The younger crowd (30-40) are probably more involved in FPS or RTS games, as those became popular in the late 80s-mid 90s. The youngest demographics probably began playing with MMORPG games.
I'll be 55 before the end of the year.

I would surmise the whole-site (mmorpg.com) mean is slightly higher than the entire gaming population mean. Just a non-empirical feeling I get from the old-game chatter, and people who actually remember the 80s.
We seem to have a lot of bitter old gamers, in other words :P

Speaking only for myself, I rarely participate in global chat. In most games I just disable it, if possible. In others, I might let it scroll by and glance at it every now and then for the amusement factor. If I actually want to communicate my thoughts, then it will almost always be to one other person, or a select group of people (i.e. guildmates).
I think I speak for the majority, however, when I say that participation in global chat is not the best way to determine the average age or maturity level of the playerbase in any MMOG. Similar to the defense used on gaming forums, people who are having fun in a game are playing it; those who aren't are bitching about it.
