General: Game of Thrones RPG in Development

Kotaku is reporting that Cyanide Studios, developers of the just-released Game of Thrones RTS title, has confirmed that a "Mass Effect like" RPG based on the best selling series of books by George R.R. Martin is currently being developed.

According to the interview with Yves Bordeleau, the Game of Thrones RPG "will pick up from there and move concurrently with the first season of the TV show (and the first book). True to the style of Martin's books, it will tell the story of two different characters, switching back and forth between them as their tales move alongside the events of the first book (and occasionally intersect with one another). None of the characters from the book will be playable, though the game's protagonists will cross paths with plenty of familiar faces over the course of the game."

The gameplay will be similar to that in Knights of the Old Republic and will utilize the "active pause system". The game will focus most on the story, something Bordeleau likened to KotOR and to the first Mass Effect. "Less action than Mass Effect 2", according to Bordeleau.

Just a side note, the Game of Thrones RTS was released last week.

I'd look forward a good RPG based on the IP.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

I heard the r.t.s is not very good. Can't find many reviews about it anywhere. Will probably pick it up when it comes down in price. This i.p could work depending on how they do it.  The politics and clan infighting and manipulation would need something better than current mmo mechanics would allow I fear. Just hope it's not another half arsed money graber. The source material deserves better imo.

The rts game is quite good, it is a strategy game like its supposed to compared compare to generic rt"s" like sc2, cnc. It is a combination of total war game with quite some politics and some combat from usual rts, the political side isnt so easy to manage though due to the fact that there are far 2 many things to do in such little time. It is a game with potential since it has new innovative mechanics that actually allow strategy and thinking, the possibilities for VIABLE openings and strategies is quite big which is a great thing.

What is wrong with the game is the marketing... I got no idea what they were doing, they gave almost 0 gameplay infor about the game and there werent any advertisements from what i show and all those, just WEEKS away from release.... making it have really poor sales and almost 0 population online...

I just hope they dont count too much on the fact that is "game of thrones" else they arent going to get anything big without marketing

That's good to here. Am quiet looking forward to playing it. Haven't been able to find much about it online, I know it was only released a few days ago but as you say, there has been little to no marketing or reviews to speak of. Well, that I can see anyway. As I said will def pick it up when I can. Looks like my kind of thing.

I'm not sure a Game of Thrones rpg is actually necessary. CollegeHumor.com already covered what it would look like pretty well: http://www.collegehumor.com/video/6579356/game-of-thrones-rpg

after the last two books in the series I am nonpulsed on playing any games centered on this author's work.  I hear screeching nails digging into blackboards now when I hear all the current boastings "american tolkin" etc.

the RTS, also be cyanide, is HORRIBLE. the world RTS ive ever played.  sluggish UI, no way to increase scroll speed, apart from the odd banner, pathetic graphics, boring action, NOTHING in common with the franchise.

i have been a huge fan of the series since  the first book was release (and a fan of george martin since the mid 80's)  the rts is a pitiful unfinished sham.   i am very sad to report, as i was very excited and eager to give it numerous chances. ive had it for a week and find it practically unplayable.

its a shame that cyanide is also doing the RPG, because the experience was so terrible, i wont play another cyanide product.

I was planning on get this but i waited and read the forum on their website and most everybody says the same thing you did. Looking at the gameplay footage on youtube it looks pretty dull, and the people all look the same on the screen. Maybe i'll give it a try when it goes down on price.

game of thrones seems like a bad setting for a videogame

I hope this is the last one. all we really need are the books

  • AnirethAnireth Member UncommonPosts: 940

I don't believe it is a bad setting. There are other complex works out there, too, like LotR or Dune. Both featured some nice to excellent games. Heck, Dune (II) started the whole RTS genre.

It's a matter of doing it right, which Cyanide might not be able to, but thats no reason to condem the whole idea. At least they are not making "A Game of Thrones: The FPS".

I'll wait to the day's end when the moon is high
And then I'll rise with the tide with a lust for life, I'll
Amass an army, and we'll harness a horde
And then we'll limp across the land until we stand at the shore

I don't see how they can make a song  ice and fire  RPG and make it any good.    1st off there are so many factions but I gusse they can go the lazy way and and only put in 4 fations  being  dragonstone,  highgarden , winterfell ,  kingslanding .   Then they need a vary good political system  and a sea combat system.   There is just to much that would need to be done.

    So What Now?

  • elsexmoelsexmo Member Posts: 1

I got the RTS  , and yes it is DIFFERENT,  it's meant to be.. it's not a C&C or a SC2, but yeah more like a civilisation mixed with a total war mix with ?????  new elements unique to this game or even closer to say hero's of mana but with alot mroe dicision making.

You have peace time where your units are all diplomatic, spies, rogues, assasians, farmers and even bitches and have to use "under hand" methods on gaining allies via sending out envoys to cities or by bribing enemy units to work for you, creating false alliances, assasinating noble ladies, creating uproars in villages etc ,  to obtain more resources to build ya army up in the back ground. And whatever you can do to the enemy they can do to you, So watch out , your own units can be turncloaks!

Then once war is declared the under hand side of it turns to the battle side and depending on how well you have done during peace time is how well positioned you will be during WAR time. With ya typical different kinds of units, gaurdsmens, warriors, knights, archers, bowmen, and commanders.  Two categories of war units 1.Mercenaries are hired by the gold resource and 2. Armies are raised via the food resource. o and there maybe dragons in it  ...

There is always ALOT going on on the screen and I dont have nearly the mental capacity or APM at this point to check on everything going on at once or do everything i'd like to at once which leads to being forced into making tactical choices. It's a VERY large game of  Rock Paper Sissors between the units which continiously escalates as your have unit level tiers.

I'm enjoying the 1 player mode atm and finding it some what challenging. having to sometimes butt rush the enemy or set up choke piont and turtle my way to victory,

Not bad for the $30 or whatever it was on steam.

It's a strategy game thats a bit different
