Why I consider Minecraft the greatest MMO I've played

IcarumbaIcarumba Member UncommonPosts: 50

EDIT #2 - Due to popular demand, I'll release the name of the server in case anyone is willing to try! The server is named Herocraft, you can reach the website at http://herocraftonline.com. I recommend you join a township (or anything above a township) as it can really get you going in the game. The forums list all official townships, so you can find one that suits your play style. I also recommend you check out the wiki from the website, you can learn more about the server and classes from there!

Hey everyone,

I know you've probably heard of the indie sensation Minecraft, but I bet many of you haven't realized the full potential of this game in terms of online play. If you're willing to read in a little, I'd like to tell you of the adventures my friends and I had in this server, so you can realize the sheer amount of freedom and fun we are having.

You see, I play in a server with about 8 other real-life friends, and have formed alliances with MANY other players in this server, and have made even more enemies. While still "small" compared to other MMO's, it does have thousands of active users (peak is around 120 playing at the same time) - which I still consider an MMO based off of everything that is possible in the game.

You olden-day UO and EQ fans would REALLY enjoy this server, it is considered "hardcore" with PvP anywhere except for at the spawn city, stealing is allowed, full loot PvP (lose everything on you if you die), extremely sandbox, class based (including 4 tank classes, 4 rogue classes, 4 healer classes, 4 crafter classes, and 4 caster classes, each with their own unique spells) with leveling from either killing, mining, or crafting.

On this server, my friends and I have created an official town - I know you can do this in games like Darkfall, but in this case, we build every single structure and decide exactly where we wanted the town to be on the map. Because of constant raiding to our town, we built a solid wall straight up to our town ring (placed by admins) so our enemies cannot enter. We designed a series of traps including a wall of sticky pistons, so if enemies try to break in, we flip a switch and the sticky pistons crush them quickly.
imageimage -pictures of our town Ignotis, you can see our bank and townhall (with our awesome wall) and our dragon out front (which serves as our exit as well)

*as a sidenote, we recently raided another town, and their trap at the entrance consisted of probably 100 dispensers that shot arrows out when they flipped a switch, and the arrows flew through lava walls which created hundred of flaming arrows shooting out at us per second. While none of us died, we had to turn back because we could not get in their town. Literally, your imagination is the limit - if you can think of a trap, or structure, or ANYTHING to do, believe me, it is possible.

Our allies recently built a town right next to ours, which has been upgraded to a city (requires 15 signatures and a bunch of coin) and we have high hopes of becoming a kingdom (so we will own much of the map, and can control much of the market). Currently, we are laying off on raiding while we help build their city up and make it look pretty, so they can recruit many more people for the required signatures for a kingdom.

Now me being a healer (druid to be exact) can be stressful at times since there are not too many healers and they are really necessary when adventuring out in the wild. Mobs are difficult to kill, and players have extremes amount of health so skill really comes into play in combat. Needless to say, it is very group based and if you are caught out in the wild alone, you are probably a dead man. In the near future, group dungeon will be added which will be an awesome addition to an already feature - packed game.

If you haven't figured out by now, the server is completely player-driven. Currently there are around 25 towns, 5 or 6 cities, and a few capitals. You will find player shops outside of most towns, and many (including a major shop) close to the spawn city. These shops are completely made by players, selling things such as common and rare ores (like diamond), armor, weapons, reagents, etc. Prices are competitive around the world, and many shops sell out of materials so there is always demand for some sort of material. Traveling is dangerous when trying to get to these shops, so it's always good to travel in at least a group of two.

The world itself is pretty big - currently the boundaries were increased for the new land in the 1.8 update, and it takes probably 40 minutes or more to travel from one end to the other. On top of that, you must take into consideration player mines underground, which are countless and filled with chests full of precious materials for you to steal. In fact, stealing can be EXTREMELY beneficial - stealing alone practically covered our entire town cost. And believe me, there are countless chests for you to be stealing, with player made houses popping up in the wilderness everyday, and many players do not take extra precautions to hide their chests properly.

Another awesome aspect of the server are GM events. These events happen randomly, usually at the spawn city, but 3 nights ago it happened in our friend's newly founded city. These events usually consist of the GMs spawning many different mobs, including giants, etc and the players attempting to take them down. While the graphics aren't the greatest in the world, the amount of fun you can get from this game is staggering. Seeing 50+ people at an event working together to take down hordes of enemies is awesome, and trying to kill the GMs as the final boss battles is too much fun. Once the GMs are dead, loot is dropped any people scramble all over the place to pick up the rare things given away, such as apples.

Well, this turned out to be a little longer than I thought. I don't want this to seem like an advertisement for the server (which is why I didn't even mention the server's name on here) but rather an eye-opening thread for all you sick of current MMO's out on the market. Minecraft is only $20 at the moment, and there are no monthly fees on these servers you can play on. There are many different servers for you to choose from, including a very popular RP server, where the players are in control of pretty much anything and everything that happens. Thousands of people play on these servers a day, so I don't see how that can't be considered an MMO.

One more note. I've been playing constantly (almost everyday) since November last year. I still get excited and look forward to logging in everyday, even if I can only play for 30 minutes. I have never had a game last me this long, and I feel like I am still just getting started. The game is constantly evolving, and since this is completely player-driven, there are always new and exciting things to experience.

As much as I wanted this thread to be an eye-opener, I also wanted to ask for your experiences with Minecraft. Have any of you tried our these servers for yourself? If so, what are you experiences with it? Would you consider it an MMO? I know for me, I play with many people and am connected to more people than WoW, which makes it infinitely more fun and more of an MMO than WoW could ever be (for me, at least). Please, share your experiences, because I want to hear them and maybe discuss a little more about the potential of these individual minecraft servers.

*Edit - I realized I barely scratched the surface on these features, so if you have questions, feel free to ask. Go ahead and request more screenshots as well, I know mine aren't the best, but I can try to go out and take screens of your requests!

Minecraft is a true MMO. And yes, it is massive and it is multiplayer. There are a few servers that I know of, that have more players than a lot of MMOs.

Minecraft is awesome. It is a total time sink that you can lose yourself in just mining an building stuff.

It's been sent, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

To the others, I'm actually surprised on the positive feedback about minecraft being an MMO! I know many people like thousands of people playing at the same time, but really, I think this is just as massive as any other game because you are interacting with many people in a seamless world at the same time.

Anyone else care to share thoughts about this?

Minecraft is more MMO than most games on the market these days- what's the point of playing with thousands of players at a time if most of the game is nothing more than a glorified lobby for battlegrounds or instances? Battlefield 3 won't charge me a subscription, and I can get some nice 32 on 32 man PvP going there. In Minecraft everything seems more tangible, and certainly the community of a server is closer. I love the game and agree with you 100%- and the potential for improvement is endless.

That being said, can I get the name of this server too? It sounds like it's run very well!

I've played minecraft off and on for longer then any game I have ever owned, and I love it very much. It's a really, really fun game, it inspires creativity, exploration, tons of stuff!

By the way, could I have a server address via pm/ect?

For me, minecraft is the best game ever.

Constanly getting update. Have alot of option. You are free to look how you want by making or getting skin for your character. And you can build whatever you want. PvP, omg sniping other people with the bow is really fun =D. Fight vs mobs, the nether is scary as hell.

The multiplayer really mean something in this game. I made my own server and I play mainly with my brother and some friend. We build island, and anything we want. It really use our imagination. We've build Castle, different type of town, boat, Church, any building. We went into making also funnier stuff like huge sized bike, labyrinth of sponge, or the KFC barrel. Right now we are building an entire island and are filling all the underwater to dig tunnel and stuff underground the island. It's going to be so cool at the end.

The piston are a really good add too. And with texture pack, the graphic aren't all that bad.

The only down that minecraft have is once you play with friend and stuff, playing solo isn't that much fun anymore.

Minecraft is great, I can't disagree. I love just about everything it includes, and I respect Notch for making the project a labor of love. However, Minecraft is not an MMO and never could be in its current state, unless the OP is aware of some server modding tool that allows admins to change their player limit (which appears to be the case). There are definitely MMO aspects to Minecraft, but two key features are missing (though may exist separately on their own): persistant worlds, and the ability to play with hundreds or thousands of players on one server. If you were to say Minecraft was the best MOG you ever played (Multiplayer Online Game) as opposed to MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online), I would agree with you. Little about multiplayer in Minecraft could be perceived as massive, aside from the generation of the world itself.

In regards to the OP, I'm surprised to see a server that changes everything I know about the product. Until now, I had thought multiplayer limits were practically unchangeable, but I'm glad to see Minecraft moving in a massive direction. It is true, this server in particular that the OP is speaking of is very MMO, but Minecraft in general was not built with that experience in mind (aka, most servers are four to eight players).

I am addicted to this game, and it gets worse with every conent update. It has more MMO elements than most games have now, which is suprising. I have tried a few servers but cant seem to find one that is populated enough, so I f you wouldn't mind sending me that IP as well, I will hop on and give it a try.

Yeah playing alone is definitely a drag, but with others it's a blast. It's really awesome seeing how other people's structures turn out, you are free to be as creative as you want. I've told my friends that don't play minecraft this before: Building is like legos on crack.

Question really quick, is it allowed to post the server name in this thread? I've sent the server website to all those who've asked, but for anyone else that wants to join, this may be an easier way. I just don't know if it's allowed on this board or not, I really don't want to get banned for advertising the server I play on :/

Minestatus.net is a great website to see which servers are currently at the top, but keep in mind there's thousands of more servers to choose from. Only from the top 10 alone you can see some really active servers (the server I play on is one of those!) but they are all really great to play and will give you much variety when deciding exactly what you want to get out of the game.

You wont be banned for posting it.  Others have asked for it, and its a direct resource for those who want to view the structures first hand.  Just post it in the OP.  The worst that can happen is a mod edit and maybe a warning.

The reason I believe it to be okay is because the intent of your post is not to advertise the server you play on.

  • Trolldefender99Trolldefender99 Member UncommonPosts: 416

What server do you play on? I'm researching various ones to join.

So far Synethesia, Buxville and possibly Battlecraft are on my list. My friend will be joining with me, as well, in whatever I choose. But maybe there is one I haven't seen on the forums.

To each his own then. I totally understand that the "massively" term is used loosely in this regard, but is more definitely has a persistant world. In fact, it is more persistant than any other game I have played before.

And yeah, this server pretty much changed the product completely. You can see that with many mods for the game (including shooter mods, pokemon mods, etc) but this sticks to the traditional class-based system you see in other games. It works really well for this server, and there is a pretty large coding team lead by the creator of the server, so there are constant changes and patches to the game. If you check out their website, you can see the constant patch notes and how much is really being changed.

I went ahead and put the server info at the top of my OP to anyone else interested. Don't forget to also check out minestatus.net, you can find many other ways to play the game there.

    Yeah for sure!

Actually as I type this, my allie's city is currently being raided by about 8 of our enemies. They killed all our allies in the town, and are basically locking all of us out of the town by guarding all the entrances while they look around for all the good stuff to steal (luckily they won't take much :P ). I guess that's what we get for having all these enemies, but this type of conflict makes the game stay interesting.

They should probably expect a retaliation soon...

its a nice sandbox experience, but because it wasnt meant for high multiplayer, the so called praised "notch" made the most buggies shit server software i saw so far, and of course modders from bukkit have to fix all his stupid shits every time he updates the game. On top of that, this is most cheatable game you will ever played multiplayer, there so many cheat clients, and hacks that you cannot stop them...

I ran a popular server for a while, with updates agaisnt cheaters, but after i did a research, its kind impossible to keep a fair enviorment in this game, since the main minecraft.jar is not protected..

Very good game single, multi its full of kids with modable clients, xray, speed hacks etc...

Maybe a few monts after release, we will have more stable server vesion tho i doubt it.

He made 30 mil euros from this game, and he invested back a few milions, with a poor staff to work on the game.

    Notch is not indie anymore.

I started playing this game about a month ago.  Just playing the single player game in survival by myself.  I have never played online with anyone.

I would like to try this server, if it is alright with you.  I do have teamspeak and Ventrilo.  PM me if you want and I would like to try the online experience.  Gonna check out the forums.

    Thanks

I don't get it, what stops people just digging the shit out of peoples cities? 10 guys with diamond picks could level one of those cities in no time.

Are the blocks indestructible or something?

    Server Backups and Bans.

Your account is your Minecraft account. To get around a ban, you need a new Minecraft account. Right now, $22 USD.
