After playing the game for a moment, I remain sceptical...

In fact this game have alot of unique features that should be included in many MMORPGs out there. But it also have many let downs.

I don't know if your friend let you create a character, just for pleasure, but the choices are almost endless. It's almost -impossible- for you to look exactly the same as someone else. There are also so many super power combinaison you can have, and different way to upgrade them via the Enhancement training system, that you will always be completly unique in this game.

The game is also really unique in the way that its in a modern Comic book world. You actualy roam a hugely interactive city, just like GTA. The town is highly realistic with citizens walking by and taxis and cars roaming the streets. You really feel like your a super hero walking around. Then you'll see woman getting their purse snatched and like any messenger of justice would do, you go kick the butts of the thugs and receive influance from the old woman you just saved.

The combat system is also unique in a way. Its not a clic and go system. You have to constantly press hotkeys to unleash a single attack just like in an arcade game, depending on the button you press you'll do that attack. Some attack even knock back the enemy, sending him flying a good 10 feets away from you. It's always fun to kick his butt off a 20 stories building and watch him fall.

Yet again, there's the bad points. After a few weeks, you'll most likely be bored of always kicking the same thugs in the same background. The missions all have an interesting background story, but you always end up in the same buildings doing the same stuff over and over. This game is great for the first timers, but gets old really fast. Keep in mind you have to pay, too.

IMO:Try the 14 days trial offered here in the ads. See by yourself. I almost guarantee you'll like it in the first days, and maybe even the first weeks. But you'll get bored... Unless you really like super heroes! It depends of the person, as always ^^!

I got this game during summer of 2004, and played it for several months. I chose a fire/bubble controller, and had an incredibly hard time reaching level 32, but once I did, getting to level 50 was very easy because of my fire imps. I discovered at that time that there really was nothing to do once you reached level 50.
I left just before Issue 3 because I felt at that time that the soon to be released Kheldians was not enough incentive for me to stay, and I wanted to give World of Warcraft a try.

I gave WoW a try, and was not impressed at all with the constant crashing of the servers, the multitudes of free trial extensions that were caused by the downtime of the servers did not help, in fact it gave me enough time to decide not to stay.

I went about 5 months without playing an MMORPG, and then I decided to check on how City of Heroes was doing. I read up on Issue 4, and decided to return mostly because of the arena and the use of a chess style elo rating. I chose a blaster this time, and was dissapointed at how little things changed, in fact I cannot name a single new villain group (I don't count the Council as a new group because they practically look just like the group they replaced, the 5th Column) . But what dissapointed me the most was the arena. Basically, if you aren't fully slotted with HOs (Hamidon Origins) , you cannot compete in the arena at all. Even if you do manage to get HOs, the arena is so unbalanced that it is easy to see why the arena is mostly abandoned. You'd think that blasters would be damage kings, but no, their damage is pathetic in the arena, in fact Scrappers are the damage kings. Say what? Are you trying to tell me that scrappers not only have a huge advantage in defense, but also outdamage blasters? Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Even controllers outdamage blasters because of the developer's brilliant idea to give controllers tripple damage during holds in PvP. The fact that Kheldians fare even worse than blasters in the arena doesn't help either.

How about this so called "elo" rating for the arena? Another huge dissapointment. This so called "elo" that is used in City of Heroes is an embarassment and does not deserve that name. In chess, if a 1700 rated player beats a 2000 rated player, the 1700 players gets a sizeable rating increase. But in City of Heroes, you get an increase of only 5 no matter who you beat. If a 1300 rated player beats a 2300 rated player, the lower rated player would still only get an increase of 5 rating points, and the 2300 rated player only loses 5 rating points. As a huge fan of chess, I am truly disgusted by this so called "elo" rating system in City of Heroes.

So I quit the game for a second time, and I don't think I'll return again. The awesome character customization, the great graphics and performance, the monthly skinny City of Heroes comic book, the nicely designed cities, and the fast paced style of combat is not enough to warrant a $14 a month subscription because of the huge lack of endgame content and content in general. The game truly ends at level 50 (the max level), let me tell you that the only thing you receive at level 50 is 3 enhancement slots and a crappy badge, if you don't believe me, just ask anyone else.

I definitely think it is worth buying. They are pretty consistent with their updates, there are numerous costume choices and so many different power combos that you can play for a long time and still learn something new. I think it is a great game! My account is up for renewal in a couple of weeks and I'll definitely be signing up for another year.

I have been playing the game since before open beata and still enjoy it a lot. I play my level 50 character still all the time. If you like the idea of playing a superhero and aren't wanting to play a game to just mill through levels and gain virtual items then it's a great game.

Myself, I'm having a blast even after a year. Issue 5 is out in August with new zones, improved missions, archery and sonic set for defenders and controllers. I think I'll be playing untill they close the servers.

your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't

The best way to describe City of Heroes is that it is a game based around combat and action. The game is broken down to the simplest aspects of an mmo. You basically have a character that's sole purpose is to defeat villians either on the streets or in missions. The missions are dynamically generated, so you do not share your mission area with anyone else except for your group members if you are in a group. There is also no PVP in the game, other than consentual PVP in the Arenas where matches are set up and tracked by a rating system.

Grouping is very well executed and easy to do. With a game wide player search, and easy group management for missions, task forces, etc; it's easy to find players to group with and be effective with. This whole process is made even easier with Sidekicking (brings a lower level player up to your level so that they can fight along side you in more difficult content) and Exemplaring (You demote yourself down to a lower level persons level so that you can fight in low level content with them).

There is no complex inventory system to manage and no high level loot as compared to other games. The only "inventory" you deal with are Inspirations (one time use, short buffs to attributes; which are automatically awarded randomly when defeating villians or purchased at the store), and Enhancements (permanent enhancements to be placed in enhancement slots to enhance your powers). This removes all ninja looting, spawn and loot camping from the game as their is no "loot" to deal with.

The process of leveling is also simple. Each villian defeated or mission completed you gain experience points. Once you reach the specified threshold of XP, you level up. You then speak with a famous Hero in one of the city zones to officially level up. At all EVEN levels, you are given the ability to choose a new super power to add to your arsenal. At all ODD levels you are given two enhancement slots to assign to a power, which you can then put enhancements in to enhance that power. When you are defeated, the penalty is XP Debt. This "debt" basically is paid off with future xp gain and slows you down. When you have "debt"...half of your future xp gain goes to the XP pool, and the other half goes to the debt; until it is paid off.

This game has impressive graphics, decent sound, and it's famed Character Creation system is so much fun and has so many possibilites, you will probably spend your first couple hours just messing around with it. I think that this game is a great starter MMO for people who are casual gamers or new to the genre. My wife absolutely hates when I play MMO's and she never could figure out what I saw in them; but she is now hooked on City of Heroes. Basically, it's just a simple, fun game. An MMO broken down to the most basic and easy to use functions. If you want quick action, decent content, fun gameplay, and a great community, than this game is for you. It's a great break from the complex MMO's i normally play.

CoH is definitely worth buying. I spend most of my free time there. The people are usually very friendly and leveling a character isn't too hard. You've also got lots of character types to choose from. Always something different to try. They are pretty consistent on updates, too.
