General: Apple's Steve Jobs Passes Away at 56

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

While not specifically MMO related, it is important to the computing world in general that Apple's Founder and former CEO Steve Jobs has passed away at age 56.

Jobs had been battling a rare form of pancreatic cancer for several years, including undergoing a liver transplant a few years ago. Jobs had stepped down from his role as the CEO of Apple in late August.

Personal computing was invented with the launch of the Apple II in 1977. Legal digital music recordings were brought into the mainstream with the iPod and iTunes in the early 2000s, and mobile phones were never the same after the 2007 debut of the iPhone. Jobs played an instrumental role in the development of all three, and managed to find time to transform the art of computer-generated movie-making on the side.

Sad news, and I would hope we don't see "not MMO related" in the comments here.

Agreed. Mr. Jobs is largely responsible, IMO, for us even being here in the first place.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Jobs' family and friends.

I have to say that I really respected the man.

And since I love apple products (in a healthy way) I was overjoyed when he finally came back to Apple and drove the company into profitability.

I didn't always agree with his methods nor did I love all of Apple's products but I admired the drive and vision of a person who saw what he wanted and made it happen.

Such a young age, so sad.

56 is just way too young to die. That's terrible. I hope his family is doing ok. Definitely keep them in my prayers.

I saw a great quote somewhere that said, "Steve Jobs founded Apple and Pixar...that's a helluva resume". Amen to that.

Even more profound a person who lived up to his legend and proved it was a reality, this man never gave up when it came to innovation.

“When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: ‘If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right.’ It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

“No one wants to die." Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

“Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Steve Jobs

I've never cared much for Steve Jobs or Apple, which I think has more to the audience they pandered to than it does any recognizable merits the two may have carried (separately or otherwise). Despite this disinterest, I have to admit that it's depressing when someone who's been responsible for technological innovation, especially to the degree and exposure of which you can find Apple products throughout the world, has left us behind. Truly, a sad day for technology and the innovation of our daily devices, even if he wasn't directly responsible for their creation.

I think the title to the io9 article regarding the same story could not hit closer to home for me: "RIP Steve Jobs, who made the world more science fictional."

It's a damn shame. But he left an incredible mark on humanity, he won't be forgotten.

If you're not familiar with Steve Jobs, check out the film based on his story (as well as Woz and Bill Gates), Pirates of Silicon Valley: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0168122/

I don't have anything from Apple right now. I did in the past.

Even if I'm a man in the 20's, I loved the pixar movie.

But this new affect me alot,

It's kinda sad to see him go. I really hope it doesn't hurt the "brand". I wish I could have known him more. He was a genius, and I've lost my grand-father when he was 55 because of cancer too. Dying at that age...

I know what his family must live, and it's not easy. I really hope what he did, he built won't stop. I hope his dream will continu even if he's not here anymore. I'm continuing the dream of my grand-father today. And I think the most important is that no one will forget this man.

    RIP Steve Jobs.

    And **** Cancer.

I never did care much for Apple's products or Mr. Job's personality, but I greatly respect Mr. Jobs for what he was able to accomplish and am thankful that he helped to pave the way for computers to be a (relatively) user-friendly device.

i havent touched an apple/mac since like 1980something .. well, except my friend's ipad .. but I blame most of the good features on my cpu to apple :) Hard to believe someone like him died so young. he will be missed.

Well said, I have despised Apple ever since the Ipod they sold me wouldn't play my own movies!...they wanted me to buy them again from itunes...

Still, it's always a sad day when a technological visionary passes on.

Steve Jobs ended all charitable contribution of Apple when he took over.  Hopefully we will see them giving again now.

It always amazed me though in the early days of the iPod how no other MP3 player could come anywhere close to the quality of the iPod.  It was totally ridiculous.  The iPod was amazing.  iTunes always sucked but at first I overlooked that because of the quality of the iPod.

But honestly as far as iPhone and iPad go, I have never been impressed and I have been sorta baffled by the press and media coverage that apple gets and the way people flock to it.  I am not sure if I am missing something, if I am just too tech saavy to get why apple is amazing, or if it all comes down to amazing marketing (I am not impressed at all by good marketing).

Part of my confusion of apple was with steve jobs and why everyone thinks he is divine.  I know that with his death will come a lot of positive talk about him, and I am looking forward to 10 years from now when we have a better retrospective of what apple has done for tech this last decade.
