Roma Victor: Commercial Test Preview

DanaDana Member Posts: 2,415

The Roma Victor commercial test is well under way and it has been shooting up our hype meter ever since it started. Today we bring you a close look in this preview from an experienced tester and guest writer Joseph "Ferox" Denise. Stay tuned in the coming weeks for a second preview from a member of MMORPG.com's editorial team.

image For those of us who have wished to live a very particular dream; to live in a virtual recreation of The Roman Empire, there is an addiction on the horizon. There is a gem of a MMORPG in testing that defies all current development trends and actually brings something truly unique to the genre.

The game that I am talking about is of course “Roma Victor”. In development since 2001 by a small group of self/privately funded developers called “RedBedlam”, who in my ten years of MMORPG testing have turned out to be the most dedicated and fun-loving bunch of gamers that I have ever had the pleasure of testing with. Never have I seen a developer staff so appreciative of their fans and so willing to hear our suggestions. Since I started testing RV I can remember clearly at least three times where suggestions on the forums actually led pretty swiftly to significant changes in the game itself.

The only question: Live a "normal" life, going outside and doing things that normal people do,

or become a hermit and play RV for the next 5 years.

Because I can't see it being possible to not become engulfed by this game.

    Will soon try: Guild Wars

He didn't even cover all of the game mechanics and it already sounded kickass! ::::02::

    Couple more things for disbelievers:

    1. All buildings are able to be burnt to the ground. (All of them)
    2. Buildings suffer from deteriation if not worked on. Say goodbye to SWG's ghost towns.
    3. This game kicks ass

Damn this pisses me off because I'm not playing right now.

Man this game is like the game I always wanted to exist but never had...

Has been a lot of bitch talking about the graphics etc for this game too. Here and on the official forums.
But for any who bother to do a search, read Dev responses etc, you'll learn that the 'fluff' element of the gfx are not even turned on yet, and that the Devs prefer to release screenshots of where the game is at THIS time, not some Photoshop touched up screeny.

A good indication of where the gfx are heading is here.

I got that link from a forum thread on the RV site, so presume there is nothing wrong with posting it.

Patiently waiting....... Very excited for this project.

    Peace.

Thanks guys, a little different then my blathering ranting about carebears and Uo on the forums isnt it? hahah

I'd like to thank KFR and the boys at RedBedlam for allowing me to write about this awesome game. Like I said in my preview RV really is the first mmorpg since old UO that I can see myself playing for years to come. Look forward to a lot more info from all the testers, and especially myself, once these guys lift the NDA.

Those screenshots show some neat things from the test like the one of me marching romans around or with the arena in the background.

Sorry, but it doesn't look like my type of game...I play games to relax a bit and get away from reality.  I don't need more realism, but that's just my opinion.

Good article Ferox, thanks for taking the time to write it.

And another link for those too lazy/uninterested to go all the way over and search the RV forums.

    This
is the "The State of the World" post. It explains what is in game now, what is coming with the Commercial Test (that includes the mmorpg.com comp winners) and what they hope to include in the future. (Last update 25 Jan, so what is in game will have been extended on since this was posted)

    http://www.roma-victor.com/game/skills.php
This is the list of current skills, and the list is being added to. Includes all sorts of things, combat training, craft, animal taming etc.

There is so many possiblities and so much freakin information that it is hard to get a grasp of what's really going to be possible. Very excited personally.

Very very nice Ferox! I wasn't a winner in the contest but I can't wait for open beta to come about. This game looks very solid with tons of content. I absolutely just love how the combat works in RV...it's so different and so much better than any other MMORPG that we've seen so far in years.

    Hail Legio XXIV Italica!

Yeah, this is my game. I hope it comes out soon 'cause I really wanna kill some people who are tons of levels above me with my friends (yes, that means you Ferox). I have never been a real fan of crafting junk but ive always been so addicted that I have to do it. Whatever company individule dudes who is making this game probably spend day and night working on it. I hope that later expansions will add the eastern Roman Empire into the game, mainly the holy land (Israel you idiote). I'm not playing any mmorpgs now but I will definitely have my life consumed my RV. My only concern about the game is that millions of people play the game and the staff start to forget the community and send them automated messages and do not even look at them (but hopefully there wont be any problems with the game and people do not need support). Also I am wondering why Greek Fire is not in the game? (no that wasnt my answer but IT FREAKIN NEEDS TO BE IN THE GAME).

Also the game should feature Elephants and camels!!

  • joejccva71joejccva71 Member UncommonPosts: 848

I'm not exactly up to speed on Roman Empire history and what happens during the time period of Circa 180AD, but I was also kinda hoping they would add different empires in it also. For instance, along with barbarians...add the Greek Empires. Like the Spartans for example who would VERY powerful in their time. Also the infamous Macedonians with their Elephants who did extremely well in battles. I guess this is going a bit far but I was wondering if they are maybe adding these other empires to them game as well?

Another question I have that I'm sure I read somewhere but can't remember is the politics and the senate. Will we be able to (with enough hard work and dedication), become a Praetorian of the SPQR?? Along with being a captain or a general in a Legion, I would think that being a Praetorian of the senate would be very difficult to come by but would have a very esteemed and prestigious level. I believe Praetorians along with soldiers of the Roman Empire Legions did their 5-10? years of service and then were awarded their own piece of land for them to retire at. Praetorians were well paid and well fed, among other things in the true history of the roman empire and they were pretty brutal when it came to policing the people of Rome.

Wish we had more particular details on the game. ::::01::

I accept anyone who wants to be my legion's enemy :P except that when you go against one legion you go against all. The way it looks like right now from the forums it seems barbarians will be a minority... so if you want to fight against the tyranny of Rome, please do so, I don't like things to be too easy :P.

At first I was bummed about the graphics until someone mentioned these are just "Beta" Graphics with none of the bells and whistles. Now I can deal with this, and thinking back on it I always prefered UO's 2D over its attempt at 3D anyway, but what really concerns me is the emptiness of the Screenshots. Always just a handful of near naked men with very little customization to them in the middle of vast fields. Or another Toga clone standing in a gigantic field with one building behind him.

Everything about the game sounds perfect to me but I just wonder if RV will be as sterile and white-wash as Rome: Total War was compared to C&C maps.

When I finally get to play the game, Im gonna raise an army and get leveled up and take you down (Hopefully I can be a rogue roman dude cause I want to be the Romans) anyways Im gonna kill you with some army. Of course everyone is gonna want to join me because....well they will...yeah.

And about the Barbarians being a minority, That might change once a bunch of immature pre-adolescents start playing the game once it is launched (they seem to like barbarians). Anyways the immature people may think I am cool and will most likely join me in taking you down.

I am doing all I can to get into the game but nothing is working.::::26::::::25::

Thanks for the helpful review but you have just motivated me to destroy your legions even though you know a ton more about the game than me (seeing as you have played it)
