Is GW as good as it is said to be?

cahill_50cahill_50 Member Posts: 4

I havent bought GW....yet. And i was wonderong if it truly was a good game. i like RPG and Strategry type games.

I have red in these forums that this is not a MMORPG but rather a Co-Op Online RPG. Is this true? and if so is it still a good enough game to pay 50$ for??

GW is not a MMOG in the true sense, it has way too much instancing to create a feeling of real immersion.

I don't recommend the game. It was overhyped as many now attest to.

GW Is allot like a online version of fable minus the appearance customization. I personally am a pretty hard core mmorpg player, and I find GW to be one of the better games released as of late, and i've played most game into the higher levels.

I think GW is more focused on making the game fun and exciting, and not so focused on creating an "immersive" world.

In short, if you use MMORPGS as a substitute for a social life, you probably won't like GW because it is truly a game at heart and makes no attempt to be a community “simulation”.

I personally wish they would implement competitive PVM and more challenging PVM task, other then that it’s a really amazing game.

Guild Wars is more of an online single player rpg game, the community is almost nonexistant, millions of people and noone really gives a crap about anyone else. Unless maybe if your in a guild. But as a social game, comparing it with others, its a disaster. It doesnt even have an ingame mail system.

haha, no in game mail system so its no good?...wow

I love this game.. People say it gets old.. but i dont think so.. i have 2 levle 20 chars Warrior/Elemental and Mesmer/Necro and i still LOVE playing this game..it doesnt get old cause you can always PvP GvG and theres alot to explore. I will admit it needs more content but thats nothing that cant be fixed with some patches and the first expantion.

What i really love about the game is that there is MANY MANY ways to build your chars.. I could make another Warrior/Elemental and it could be completely diff. than my other one.. Really neat game.

And honestly i got sick of WoW around 2 weeks in..Ive had this game a month and i cant stop playing

Calm down fanboi, where did i say the game was no good? try reading before typing. I'm simply making a point that GW has one of the worst communitys in mmo's right now, and the lack of even a mail system is a big reason why. In this age, how can a online game not have some way for people to communicate?

Especially in a game who's only end game content is Pvp combat, highlighting, Guild vs Guild combat.

The game is fun for the money spent.

With no monthly fees, the game can sit and sit and sit and you can leave and come back and leave and come back... etc.

The game is billed as soloable and PvP. It is NEITHER.

Soloable: Not. You'll need henchmen to finish many quests and the Academy quest is forced grouping. Fortunately, it doesn't last long. The game is better played with a friend or two and is a lot of fun.

PvP: Not like you'd expect. It follows the name of the game exactly. Want a 1-on-1 duel? FORGET IT. It ain't possible. The only PvP is group vs group, or guild vs guild, period. There's not even an open arena-style PvP free-for-all.

Those 2 points may not be important to you, and those 2 points have a good chance of being "updated" when the game is expanded. So don't consider them real "gamekillers."

Many people say the game is a D2 clone, but it ain't. If GW is a D2 clone, then so is UO or EQ. This game can be played 1st person or 3rd - I alternate between the 2 for combat targeting. You can also move using the keyboard like a traditional 1st person game. OR you can 3rd person point-and-click.

The game is fun, utilizing skill points and skill choices within professions. The combos possible are impressive.

COMBAT: Every game bills their product as the "first game to use skill instead of level." What a load of crap. GW is all about level, let me tell you. The only time your level doesn't matter is when you're level 20. Otherwise, the combat is fun.

    LAG: Almost none.

QUESTING: Quite a bit of it. Good quests, big and small, with rewards to match.

EQUIPMENT: Very limited. No 1 handed hammers. No 2 handed swords, etc. But these aren't game killers. I expect weapons and armor will be part of the next expansion.

COMMUNITY: Being that every zone is instanced, there is little community. HOWEVER, community is what you make of it. The only time you see other people is in town. Each town might have anywhere from 5-30 instances - that's how many people are in the game. People talk, sell, and interact. So if you're expecting cyber-sex or instant dating or something equally STUPID, then maybe this community isn't for you. However, my wife and I found it to be as deep as any other community. There's talk, there's jokes, there's interaction. What else can be expected? For crap's sake. An in-game email system would be great in ANY game, and I agree it could use one here. Whether anyone likes it or not, not everyone will roleplay and there will be the typical 14-year-old know-it-all chat in any community. So, I would say the community in this game is as satisfactory as any other.

PLAYABILITY: Hell, man, jump right in. This was one of the easiest MMOGs I've ever loaded up and started. everything about the UI is intuitive and almost too easy to pick up. The starting quest introduce you to the game so slowly that you'll feel like an expert at the start of the next quest.

WORHT IT? Hell yes. Considering that many of us plunk down $50 on games that require a $15 monthly subscription just to end up cancelling... You can NEVER play those monthly games again after cancelling (without resubscribing), but you CAN with GW. No need to ever cancel, because IT'S FREE. Your $50 investment is never lost - not like a subscription game.

    Games:
WAR, LotRO, AO, GW, EQ, EQ2, AC, AC2, Vanguard, CoH, EVE, HZs, SO, MxO, SWG, DAoC, WoW, WWIIOL

I pretty much agree with Tilden's post.

I played GW through every beta weeked from E3 2004 and still play it now. My main character is level 20 and has Ascended but I've not completed all the missions - yet. I also have a couple of alts who are around level 10.

The only problem that I have is the lack of community spirit. Since nobody really wants to group with you to complete non-story quests (which unlock skills and abilities), it is normally necessary to rely on henchmen. And because the combat areas are instanced, it can feel lonely. I imagine with no guild it's even worse. But then playing a game called GUILD Wars with no intention of joining a guild, I have to doubt your intelligence. Guild v Guild is fantastic PvP.

Anyway, I would much rather have a slight feeling of detachment from the world while I complete mini-quests than deal with all the problems that come with 'normal' MMORPGs - kill stealing, long camps waiting for spawns, etc.

Also, there is talk from ArenaNet of adding in some kind of free for all arena, so we'll see how that goes.

It's definitely geared more for casual gamers who only have a couple of hours to play per day (like myself) than hardcore players who spend their time doing nothing else. That's the way games should be - I don't want to spend countless hours doing the same thing over and over to advance 1% in an area :)

    See, I didn't even mention that there's no monthl fee...damn :p

Dont worry about it needing more content, it was only released in april of this year. not one expansion pack has been out yet

Why does this game piss n00bs and idiots off so bad? I think it’s because this game isn’t for losers who have no life and depend on mmo’s for all social international, and people who suck at pvp unless they put 100s of hours into the game to get the phats. This game is game play and skill based, and I think it drives the n00bs and idiots mad that they will always suck at the pvp and they will always be un-wanted n00bs with in the community.

This is the BEST and most well thought out mmorpg I've ever played, and i've played everything, except wow and doac, on the market into the higher levels.

I liked the game quite a bit to start off with, and played straight to lvl 7 in a few hours (10 hours actualy), but thats with doing all the quests for skills and quite a few others to explore the world or Pre-Searing Ascalon, 'cos I'd seen a lot of Seared Ascalon watching a friend play (the whole reason I bough the game was his urging, :P) and getting quite a bit of Gold (and even 1 platinum, ::::35::), so if it continues being so easy to level, it'll definately be for a casual gamer, the instancing is good on one hand, since you don't get a lot of lag that way (I always play in the International Disctricts where theres almost no-one, 'cos otherwise my CABLE, connection lags), but with non-instanced cities Anarchy Online doesn't lag at all, so all I can say is that I the position they're advertising about a Server and Networks programmer gets filled very soon, since it seems they're just trying to send too much data, and need to redo some architecture, anyway, what I think the game needs other than what has already been mentioned, is more lvls, and more content below the max lvl, so that you can actually do some stuff before getting to the max lvl, and some non-instanced dungeons where there need to be some huge mobs whichyou need multiple teams of max lvl people to kill, 'cos lets face it raids are always fun, ::::18:: and maybe a complete overhul of the skills system, j/k, that'd just make it yet another MMORPG, one I would like, true, but it would lose a lot of its uniqueness, but it needs a better armour/weapon system, and they need to make bags more easily availiable, and screw the logic of it, not have you have to equip the bags, but let you open them straight from your inventory, and have say 20 slots per bag, like I said screw logic, who need logic when it makes the game fun, make up some crap like there was a spell cast on your inventory to deffy natural laws of space, ::::35::

.....And I should really stop rambling now......

.....Oh and the soundtrack rocks....Goes and plays Guild Wars anyway.....

.....Oh and about not wanting to join a guil, I do want to join a guild, but not a guild full of retards, and I would rather stay guildless than join a bunch of idiots......

I'd agree with most of Tilden's review, except to me when I do missions and such only with henchmen, that's soloing.  I've soloed the whole game so far (to level 18) as a side game to my main game.  Frankly I think soloing the missions with henchmen is great fun, once you get the hang of it ... and some are quite difficult that way.  Not to mention some zones ... e.g. Lorinar's Pass ... eek! =)

The PvP is great fun to me, but then I am not a PvP afficiando.  It's just an entertaining diversion for me.

It's very well worth the money.  Honestly it's far better then I expected, and I liked what I saw in beta.  Fabulous looking game ... the best looking, IMO.

Easy to learn and plays smooth as silk (once you learn not to get stuck in corners by the henchmen or your pet lol).

It's quite different froml the other "classic" mmorpgs, but that's not a negative.  It's simply a fun as hell game.

Not being a PvPer, I suspect what will happen is that I will finish the initial content and then put it aside for a few months until the first expansion comes out, but I will sure as hell be there again when it does.

i dont get it , whats the problem with these people !??i never used hench , i hate hench ... i did all missions , and still doin some quests ,...  for me the game is to be played with humans , if i cant find anyone to do the quest i want , i just go and do anything else ...only if im really depressed and want to be alone i take those dumb and silent hench.its true that humans can be rude and stupid , run in front alone and die , etc etc but that makes it fun , you say a joke and be ready for the next run .and most important , meet people ! its the only way to find a good guild , is playing with humans , henchs wont help on that.

what i love more about this game , ... even if you make the strongest char in the game , if you are alone , you may get bored and stop playing ...

i guess im a social person cose i only learnd to use hench when i was already lvl 19 or 20 , i didnt even know they existed.
