solo play i mmorpg's

Are there any games out there who doesn't punish solo players? I've been following the new mmorpg's under development, and all of them states that joining a faction og guild will give players extra abilities and bonuses.  I think that it's ok that some monsters and quest requires many players to be overcome, but I think it's unfair that guild players gets to be more powerful.

While soloing is fun and has its purpose, I don't believe you will ever see a MMORPG that is designed where the soloer can keep up with the guilds.  I mean, that is why they call it a massive multiplayer, otherwise you would just be playing some other game and not be paying the monthly fees.  You pay the fees in order to maintain the servers and fuel expansions.  Playing solo will always be a side event and far less powerful than those that join a group.

Why doesn't DOS ever say "EXCELLENT command or filename!"

My problem is that I don't have a lot of time to spend gaming, and I will rarely be able to participate in planned dungeon raids or other events. I think that joining a guild requires a level of commitment that I don't have time for.

  • Well the point of most mmorpg's out there is to work together.  Since part of the fun is in the community in my opinion because its the friends you meet who really make the game great.  I know what you mean and I felt the same way before but if you are trying to solo you might as well just get a regular RPG since its talored to you

I dont get the chance to play a lot either, maybe an hour or two a night if I am lucky, between 40 hours at work, full time student and a girlfriend; my time is dedicated elsewhere.  There was one game that I found some fun soloing in, and it was PlanetSide.  Once you have the certs you want, there is really no nead to join a squad, and it doesn't take long to get a good ammount of certs anyway.  Plus while out in the field you will always be able to find a temporary squad to join.  And even if you do join an outfit, it is not like you have to be on daily, unless you join an outfit that controls a base.  When you are in an outfit, it makes it super easy to find a battle and a squad.  I'd suggest PS for you.

I have been playing EQ primarly solo since its inception, and like the community aspect of MMORPGs. They do not have to be strictly for grouping. I dont think that is what defines a game as MMORPG. Sure grouping and guilds are a large part. But I tend to believe that being able to coverse with other people as well as purchase and sell player made equip make these games playable by all, not just the people who prefer groups. It is imperative that these developers take into account the relatively large group of solo players and ensure there are systems in place to allow these players to enjoy the game. EQ failed in some respect in this, especially as of late.

I think that it depends upon the type of people playing the game and the community in general.  Take, as an example, AC2 which I play (after having quit SWG because it blows big chunks!!! image ).  The other day I randomly ran across someone in a dungeon and we teamed up.  He saw that I was a certain class so he gave me, for free, and item that I needed to complete a long quest.  Which was very cool!  I found such an item as well, and have since offered it to people who might need it.

It takes teamwork but not necessarily guildwork to succeed in a mmorpg.

First off it is misleading:  If you realy want people to check out everwars then link them to http://www.everwars.com

The way your doing it should say come help me out Everwars.

In addition there have been several that have been baned for posting links to everwars all over, with all links having some sort of refer action going on.  You have it in your sig, so every time you post it will be there.

Yeah it looks as if some of the newer ones yet to be released like Horizons and City of Heroes may have things in place that will make it fun for the solo gamer.

Ok, point taken. I found Everwars through someone elses link and didnt care that I was in fact helping them. I am not spamming boards to get it out there and this is the only site I have this set up on. If I receive an email or message from a site admin telling me to remove it or that its illeagal I will remove it. Until then I have noted your objection, however it will remain....

Bastard! This is the post that killed grouping, and promoted solo oriented MMOs!
