I think its a decent game, I enjoyed it for a while, but if you started playing rift because you got bored with WoW.. you probebly end up putting this one down fast.

Not completely true and it depends. If you like WoW, but hated dirt slow updates then yeah Rift is what you want. If you just hate the trinity tank/dps/healer, then GW2 is in April 2012 probably so have fun.

The content updates are almost constant and they have added a crap ton to do at end game for sure.

Thanks for the replies folks. Im going to go ahead and get the game. It doesnt have the feeling of a "big world" like in WOW or LOTRO but other than that I dont see anything I dont like about it. If they would add EQ2 type housing and a carpenter trade to make furniture I would be hooked but good. Thanks again guys for the replies.

Player housing was a feature to be "implemented in the future" according to the developers even before launch, so I dont think it's something impossible. Maybe on the first expansion.

Carpentry is already in game, it's called Artificing, and allows you to manufacture wooden items, for now staves and such but since it uses wood as raw material it can as well manufacture furniture item. A carpenter is after all an artificer

I didnt know what artificing was.  Yes it could add some recipes for furniture and such. I think its a pretty solid game.

I played the game pretty consistently for about 2 months and had a good amount of fun for that amount of time. Gets boring after a while though, for me at least.

LFD tools are great for cramming people into content, but quality > quantity.
I am, usually on the sandbox .. more "hardcore" side of things, but I also do just want to have fun. So lighten up already :)

and placed in just over 1,500 hours into the game thus far so all depends on you :)

It all depends on the individual TBH.  I myself quit WoW to go to Rift when it launched and I lasted for 2 months before I told myself "why do this all over again" and "this is the same game I quit for"  So i tried going back to WoW and didnt last 2 days.

I myself have grown more hardned to the charms of themepark MMO's and I want a living, breathing, alternate realizty that I can loose myself in after a hard days work at my real life job, and WoW and their ilk just doenst cut it any longer.  I went back to my original MMO that got me hooked in the genre way back in 1999, Asherons Call.  I havnt looked back and dont plan on quitting AC again till GW2 or TSW.  I do plan on picking up Skyrim and Kingdoms of Amalur for my Single player RPG experience when they are released but other then that who knows.  Untill an AAA developer comes along and takes a chance on building a non PvP focused Sandbox with crafting, dynamic looting, focus on storylines, player housing, and detailed non-kill 10 rat quest types I will try to stick to something more non traditional.

    I suggest giving Everquest 2 a try.

You'll be surprised at how massive and deep it is, especially coming from WOW/Rift.

I got a decent 2 months out of it before hitting level cap. I stretched it out to 3 months, but I didn't do any raids or anything like that. I'm kind of done with organized, instanced Raids and smaller scale PvP, so Rift's end game wasn't really all that appealing to me. I haven't been back to try the update yet that includes more solo content.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Imo..since Cataclysm split the regions up with impassable canyons , started corralling everyone from  quest hub to quest hub and made levelling mega-quick...well..it just doesn't seem as big a world as it did when I started.(right before BC). Which saddens me a bit.

Bought the collector's edition of Rift and was hyped, played the open beta and enjoyed it.

Game went live and then all hell broke loose...

In less than 30days I had done every quest in the game, ran every dungeon many many times, was in all tier 1 gear with four pieces of tier 2.

I raided 4 times and had my rep maxed or in a really good place with all the factions.

And then like everyone else said, I logged in and said to hell with this faction grind and running the same dungeons and raids over and over again for the carrot.

If they had not nerf rogues I would maybe have stayed another month or two.... but with the nerfing of the rogue class that was the nail in the coffin.

6 months later and the developers with patch 1.5 finally realize and admit they over nerf the rogue class and that the class only had 2 spec's maybe 3 that people were even using.

Sorry but I put up with that shit and more in WoW and I can't be bothered to play another mmo and go through it all again.

Rift was a polished and fun game but it didn't have what it takes to keep me playing and felt like a small game world.

    Played: MCO - EQ/EQ2 - WoW - VG - WAR - AoC - LoTRO - DDO - GW/GW2 - Eve - Rift - FE - TSW - TSO - WS - ESO - AA - BD
    Playing: Sims 3 & 4, Diablo3 and PoE
    Waiting on: Lost Ark

You played over 200 hours in a single month and can not figure out what happened?

Here is what happened for those not paying attention and ToR fans and Bioware pay attention. This is what happens when you make purples easy to get. Tiers 2 instances used to have no lock outs and people who had a lot of free time ran them back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back to back gaining gear, plaques, reputation.

They changed it about 20 days in and the damage was already done. Post like the one above flooded the forum about the game having no content and in my view Rift moderators should have considered these "i quit" post and locked them immediately.

Like I am sure you have seen a million times posted from fans of Rift. Just because you played an ungodly amount of hours does not mean it applies to everyone else. I think ti has a lot of content honestly for a game from a mystery dev that came out of nowhere.

If we are going to set standards here. Trion is a no name dev that came out of nowhere with 2 months of hype and a 50mil dollar budget. ToR better have 3-4 times as much end game content? 30-40 instances on launch date.

    I can only say "meh"....

Like, positive stuff: the graphics ain't bad. And there is lots to try out. And the dungeons are FUN if you find a nice group.

    The bad:

For example, my highest character is now level... 24? Something like that. That's half of max level. And I have seen 1 1/2 different zones so far. The half one beeing the starting zone, the rest all beeing the same. Half way through the game level wise, and seen only the same stuff over and over and over. I guess you can move on to the next zone with level 20, but I still got quests there and are getting good xp. And the next zone is, guess what... more forest, just a bit darker. And that annoys me.

I know people groan about the comparison, but when I played WoW, I had dozens of different landscapes to start in, and when I was level 30, I had visited already three or so additional zones. And in Rift I've been at the same time ALWAYS IN THE ONE SINGLE FRICKING zone. And that sucks.

And regarding crafting, it's about the same. Now beeing about halfway through regarding the level, I can still pick up the second lowest resources for skill points.

Equipment: Well my cleric got now a slightly fancier hammer than in the beginning, a helmet and shoulder armor, but looks about the same as when I started.

What annoys me a bit about Rift, at least on the german servers, is that there is no communication. Maybe in the most tight knit guilds, but in the ones I joined or in the open chats, noone ever talked. Booooooring....

I still play the game every now and then, because I want to see what some skills look like and how things change.

And, as said, the game has no replayability whatsoever. You got four classes, each with like 6 or 9 or so talent trees of which you pick three. And then you can get a number of different builds you can choose from. Which means you need to play four characters and then you need to never play a new character again. Because of that, the starting areas seem to be quite empty too. There is simply no need to start again with a new character.

Where you had in WoW dozens of different starting zones and characters, and just lots to try out, you got in Rift two starting zones and four classes.

The game is not bad as said, but it just seems to consist of a nice idea (Rifts) realized in a good looking way, but condensed to the absolute bare minimum of a game.

I mean come on, half way through the game and still in the same godamn starter zone. T_T I don't regret picking it up (for 7€), but as said... it just seems to be lacking content wise.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

It's mostly on how you are as a player and your likes as to how long Rift will "last", OP.

There are people who played RIFT, got a six month sub and just now re-upped for another year in advance. (probably Puremallace) Then there are people who played RIFT got a six month sub, and got so bored they didn't log in again after the second month. I'm somewhere in the middle of those camps.

While there is a lot of content in RIFT, the "content" is quite recycled as you see people talk about. The dungeons you see at level 20 are the same dungeons you'll see at 50 with a few extra bosses now called "expert". Another dungeon you'll see as normal is now "master mode", again with a few different new bosses but the same area or slightly changed. These types of things don't constitute "content" in my book but fans think it so so that's that.

You must like to grind. If you don't you will not like RIFT at all.

The new PA system put in is something you can only get at level 50 which doesn't really do much except give you a reason to grind in the pre-existing dungeons and rifts that you were already doing since they didn't add many new quests. Basically once you hit 50, you earn points that minutely increase stats like .02 Dex or something per exp bar leveled. Someone worked out the math on the site and it's quite ridiculous what you'd have to do to get the full tree worked out. So basically, it's just another grind vehicle like faction reputation. If you enjoy that, you'll like RIFT because that's what you do at endgame.

There's cool things in the game like in any mmo (even APB had cool stuff) so the trick is to hope it has more of the things you like than don't like to keep you logging in.

I personally found their deviation from a focus on rifts to focus on dungeons/raiding/grinding to be unforgivable and showing change of vision. If you are looking for an expansion, there won't be one until next year... probably March.

If you enjoy grinds, then this is the game for you.

This is how it works: Grind to 50, Grind dungeons to get gear to get to other dungeons, grind other dungeons to get even better gear to do raids, grind raids to get better gear... now in 1.5 they added ANOTHER grind.

not worth it imo. To much time doing the same thing and dungeons over and over again.

It was worth the full retail price I payed back at release simply for 1 to 50 (I took about 6 weeks which is sort of long).

Bear in mind though, that the population was absolutely booming back then so invasions wwere popular, especially in Silverwood/Freemarch and Gloamwood/Stonefield.

If you like theme park MMOs, it is not bad. The souls sytem is incredibly fun, as is PvP in the lower levels (PvP only gets really tedious at 50). The instances are also well done as well.

On a technical, gameplay level, it is a very good themepark, standard MMO with an exceptional class-soul-role system. On an immersion-based level, it isn't as good. The races realluy don't have defining features or storypoints. The world is small to begin with, and the lack of true towns and grand cities make it feel smaller still. The lore is sort of lacking so if you're looking for a "world", then RIFT isn't the best game to play long term. Things like music, and polish are also somewhat lacking, unfortunately.

If you have cash and money to spend, give it a whirl IMO. There is ALWAYS some deal (no exaggeration!) so take advantage of those.

"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

Its the same thing from start to finish.

So if you like something that doesn't change, go for it.
