What would you people think of PvP mini games....
For those among us that know LoL (leagues of Legends) I think something like this could work really well as a PvP instance... Using your characters instead of the Summons and NPC's replacing the minnions...
And instead of earning gold to buy gear and special levels.... you could earn trait points .... and extra Stats.. (temporarily as long as that single game lasts)
If they would add fresh things like this over time and sell them through their ingame store, it would take GW2 really the next step.... Instead of being only a portal to your favorite MMO, it would also be a portal to your favorite set of minigames... From all currently under development MMO;s GW2 seems the most suited to take this direction.
Maybe they could even let 3rd party game developers design these kinds of minigames, and let those sell them in their Store.. a bit like an Apstore.... with millions and millions of people playing GW2 in less then a year, this would add another layer to the game... Their 10 skills Bar system allows for a lot of flexibillity considering these things.

with 30+ minigames already in GW2 and most of them i quess would be PvP based , why now want to add the next ones to the in-game store? Or maybe you can explain more clearly what road it is you are visioning ?
I don't really think MOBA style game would work well inside a MMO as something that's simply tacked on for sake of "innovation". Even the supposed innovation would be questionable considering how old DotA is, and the mode would never be as polished as dedicated games of this genre.
I'm pretty sure they wille xpand on PvP over time however, seeing as at release only COntrol PVP maps will be in game, but waves and waves f NPCs along with towers and all that fancy mechanics... too much resource heavy to bother while you have to upkeep whole MMO alongside.
Yes that is really true, you must consider it first, and then think about it. 30 is enough for game like GW2
LAst number i hear was around 11 at release... Where did you ever find that number in the 30's?
On top of that, there was no mention anywhere that these minigames would involve PvP.
Many of those minigames will be of the more simple kind, like a bow shooting minigame... Nothing very spectacular... but knowing Arenanet, very much fun to participate... I have seen a playingcard game mentioned somewhere else, but never i have seen PvP kind of things.
On top of that we are derailing from the oprriginal post, would a LoL kind of minigame be fun?

I totally love the mini-games concept as its presented in GW2.. Finally a reason to hang out in more than one capital!
As for LoL type mini-games.. Imo that's more of a structured PvP innit? They might have a LoL-style game map somewhere in the works with NPC minions constantly streaming from the bases and such. (We know that there is a NPC monster dragon in one BG so that wouldn't be much of a stretch..) And besides GW2 devs stated pretty clearly that LoL is one of their main inspirations for structured PvP so...
As for mini-games, I'd really like to see "PvP" style minigames such as snowfights, sport-like events (Bloodbowl!!!) and maybe even spoofs on board games (Bloodchess!!!). A detailed write-up on minigames would definitely help fill up the time waiting for WvW and last profession reveals...
I admit that the only innovation of a Dota minigame in an MMO would be the fact that its done in an MMO...
But if done well, it can be just as good, or maybe even better then a dedicated Dota game.... Arenanet has a habbit of making these things work incredibly well.... Polymock anyone?

Hmm, the last info on mini-games is that every racial capital will have 4-5 mini games (plus the main capital) which gives us a number in the range of 24 to 30. They might have lowered the number of mini games per capital a bit, but i seriously doubt they'll go below 3/capital which is 18 games minimum.
The ones we know of are the archery contest, the free-for-all bar brawl (definitely PvP) and most probably the snowfight (PvP).I suspect we'll see something like the beetle race as well because it was extremely popular in GW1.
have a look at the orriginal GW list of minigames to see what we might expect....

Structured PvP will be based totally around conquest maps....
That leaves a lot of room in the minigames department for more PvP based games... making them more for the fun part then for the competitive part of the game... There will be hordes of casuall players looking for a timepass in this game...

Well it would be nice to have a perspective view when playing a Moba, rather than an isometric. But then again in Moba the champions have to be balanced to achieve their goals proper to a moba. But why not, it just seam a hell of a job for a minigame. But if they actually don't need to rebalance the class for it to work, and just give some special weapons for example, why not. I'm still a bit skeptical.
Yeah, but as the devs said conquest model is extremely flexible.. In fact I'll now say something I'll probably get flamed alive for but...
GW2's structured PvP maps concept is a 100% copy od WAR scenarios!
Gasp!
In WAR all maps are conquest! And they even all go to the same 500 points to win!
Now calm down and breathe deeply....
WAR has shown that "conquest 500" maps can be extremely varied in design. For example, the base that you have to hold can move around the map on its own, like "push the cart" maps in TF2... Or the thing that you have to hold can be carried by a player (like "Mourkain temple" map in WAR, a total blast btw)... Or you can have shifting bases with game dictating randomly which base is active at the moment, etc etc...
So imo there is plenty of space in "conquest 500" model to make almost any type of a map, including LoL-style.
I am not going to flame you on this...
I love your logic and it shows me something i overlooked.... Yes WAR showed us that Conquest maps can be quite flexible, and i love you for just reminding me of that...

i think the idea is just strait out dumb
if you want to play a LoL type game.. go play lol.. its free
if they by some reason would add this as a minigame... whats stopping them from making a FPS deathmatch minigame? or mario karts? or minecraft? or mortal kombat? the list just goes on and on... this is a mmorpg
a minigame is a minigame... not a game within a game
Exactly, the fact that they would take Moba a step further then isometric could be an awesome feature in itselves...
Tough if you look at the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UrU0Sg6KJs (Polymoc game) they could even introduce it as an Asura game where you make your heroes Polymock piecess run around in a maze that the player views from the top... Asura magic is quite suited for this......
Which would give the ingame pieces you're collecting another game to put them up in.... (I can even see them making money by selling these pieces that can be found and traded ingame thorugh the cash shop)

Nothing at all....... Its my vision of it all....... It will build a strong community, when you want to play something different for a while, you can find and do it inside your guildwars community
And i say yes to games within a game.....(grins) seems we disagree on that.... Big point is that if they can make money from these things through their cashstore, they should implement them...

From the wiki:
There are about 30 activities in game.[2]
And:
Known activities
Archery[2]
Bar brawl
Keg Brawl
Shooting gallery
Smash ‘Em Up[4]
Snowball fight
An unknown activity that involves shooting mini golems that explode. [5]
I don't think games within game are a bad idea, especially if theose games are hard socially to get a partner in real life, but so easy to access in a mmorpg. I used to play chess in Uo and it was great, because it was quiet easy to find chess partner there, the game was so popular. I never bothered finding chess partner on the net for exemple.
If done right games like Keg Brawl might be epic....
I hope they have rankings and allow player teams to play against eachother in these games....

Well I think it keep be integrated really well into the game, but this will have to be cross server. One team is composed from one server, while the other is from another.
I think PvP battlegrounds should have more structure than just a small space for people to pvp, you need major objectives, bouns objectives, structured teamwork, a lot of things that make team based pvp better.
But wouldn't this be more of a feature than a minigame? especially since MOBA style game is extremely competitive.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW?
As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.
I think it could work easy enough, but tbh I wouldn't want this feature in GW2.
LoL is pretty fun, I admit, but it really does have it's own niche fanbase. Trying to replicate something similar in GW2, with far less heroes (ie less variety) would seem like a pretty poor want to spend resources imho.
If, they did something similar in terms of map setup (waves of NPCs and your team fights not only the other team, but also NPCs to achieve victory), that would be pretty fun.
In fact, that would be almost identical to how GvG worked in the first game. I'd definitely welcome something like that (still 3rd person perspective, no change of skills / etc., just conquest with added NPC armies to keep the momentum going). This wouldn't really be needed, given how fast paced the combat already is in GW2 (and the respawn rate is really quick as well), but it could be really fun if setup right. The trebuchet's would probably kill the map, though, lol. I could definitely see that being the deciding factor.
Well, maybe thats just what we are going to see.... basically its all identicall.... as long as the NPC patrolls have set paths and goals, like the LoL minnions... very dynamically too, pushing forward and falling back...

Give me a roulette casino mini game please! I've always wanted to log into my char after a night on the piss and find him naked, homeless and not a penny to his name after A night in the casino.
I could see something LoL-like in structured PvP, 1 vs 1 with minions spawning all over the place. Making one or more PvP-maps out out of that concept could be something for small DLC content actually.
Then again, I guess the people really into that might just go play LoL...
I don't want to play DOTA in GW2, so even less a easy-dota-mode.
It's completely a different type of game and I prefer they focus on something else.
Plus, If I want to play a Dota-Genre game, I wouldn't want to play it as a mini-game in a non-dota-genre game. I would play Dota.
I would love to have challanges that sendt unlimited amounts of monster waves and you would have to defend a castle or a keep. This could be a format where 5 or 10 people would defend it. It also would get harder and harder every round. Ofc there would be leaderboards and rewards for getting 1,2 or 3 place. This could take place in the mists even though it is not PvP, or there could be 5 different maps, one in each main city.
What are your thoughts on something like this?
Sure, why not. Would be fun if done right.
Looking forward to uhh.....
