Doesnt mean that the game looks like WOW its already a WOW CLONE. All i can say is that WOW was just the first game to came out. PERIOD!
It wasnt the first MMORPG it was like 7 years after the first RPG i know that been released, The reason why WoW is so popular is it the first game to advertise on TV in 75% of the countries in the world.

He was joking!
You would be surprised that there is huge amount of people who thinks that Blizzard invented the whole MMO genre.
Nowadays the term “WoW clone” can be used negatively by players or gaming industry people but the truth of the matter is that there are quite a few games like WoW that have become major hits, with millions of active players, especially the free WoW clones. The answer is quite simple really. The entertainment industry loves a hit and always wants to join the bandwagon when something new becomes popular. For example, how many movies released in a year are sequels or prequels? It’s less risky for business if you put your money on a proven moneymaker compared to a new, untested and unproven property. That’s why when the World of Warcraft burst into the MMORPG gaming scene and stunned industry experts with its enormous amount of paid subscriptions that far exceeded earlier numbers, developers immediately started looking into releasing similar games.
Originally posted by fivoroth I've seen soooooooooooooooooooooooo many threads flaming various MMO for being a WoW clone. So what's so bad about it? Why do you people assume that simply because someone is bored with WoW it meas that they are bored with the game's concept? I've played WoW since release. I've seen all the game has to offer and I am bored with it but that's because I know everything there is to the game. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't want a game which plays the same way as WoW does, e.g. a game like Rift. I would love to have a good WoW clone where I can explore new zones, classes, lore etc. For me WoW's way of doing it is fun without all the crap most other games have. For me WoW is the best MMO and I have played every single pay 2 play MMO out there. Every single one and not even one of them came close to WoW. I would love to play a solid game which adops most of WoW's ideas (and maybe that's why I am enjoying RIFT so much at the moment). It's just like Diablo 2. There isn't a single good clone of that game which feels or is as fun as D2. I was actually surprised at the lack of Diablo 2 clones. I won't even comment on sandbox MMOs. These are not worth my time. I've seen so many people talking about how great they are and about the possibilities!!! Man, all the possibilities!!! Yeah, right! Maybe in someone's wildest imagination but not in reality.
You do realise that WoW itself is a clone, yet all MMORPGs are a clone of the very first MMORPG: Meridian 59...!
Do you know that every MMORPG came from just one concept of RPG that started from pen and paper "Dungeons and Dragons" that is. How would you know if the game is a WOW clone or not? Just state some specifics before posting the game is a WOW clone or anybodies clone. Know your history to know your game.
I give you an A on that. Give them some light on their dark period of times. Most of the players doesn't know what they are talking about. Maybe the difference is the age? Or they just live in the age where WOW only excist. Just kiddin.
Hmmm. To me would be a game that copies a lot from WoW without really adding anything significant to change the gameplay.
1. Fixed profession roles (hybrids like paladins and shamans don't count, you're fixed in what aspects of the hybrind you specialise in)
2. That recognisable UI.
3. Purchased skill upgrades
4. Talent trees
5. Raid centric endgame
6. Gear-based character power
7. Cheoreographed fights with huge bosses
8. Crafting that is a horrible grind to get the good stuff
To me these are the mechanics off the top of my head that makes WoW, well WoW. There are more but I can't just put my finger on it now.
Out of the three games the OP mentioned, I think that SWTOR is the furthest away from a WoW clone right now. Rift just has the customisable talent trees that go both ways, and the rift system to differentiate it. RoM is probably the closest to WoW with just a dual-classing system differenitating it as far as I know.
TOR is the furthest because it is trying to change the overall focus of the game away from the endgame raids/PvP and towards an actual immersive storyline. Though how much they will eventually concede to the whiners I'm not too sure...
Then there are zillions of games for you to choose from. What are you doing here? If there were so many UO clones as there are WoW clones I wouldn't be here rambling on.
I personally have been loving Allods, which is def. one you could consider a WoW clone. Something that must be considered too is that some of the clones have little wrinkles or facets that set them apart. They take a tried and true formula and put their own twist on it. Works for me.
WoW clones was just been amaze and a have little bit of envy in wow. they just want to prove that they can also create a good mmo as well. they want people to have a choice choosing another game that will satisfy their life
A WoW clone based on Cataclysm will have quest based leveling. Long linear quest lines and some form of phasing. It will have instances and a dungeon-finder( cross server if its a 100% clone).
I really dont like any of that and prefer very different MMO:s. So for me all games like that will feel like clones. But it of course depends on how different that sub genre is compared to MMO:s you like and the sort of games you are looking for. From my perspective games with those features appear to have enough in common to be called clones.
I could less about jazz, but I don't hate a jazz album. It logically doesn't make sense.
Lets say you dont like jazz but your boss loves it. And there is one jazz album that he really think is fantastic. And you are forced to listen to that album 8 hours/day for 2 months. And you really cant tell him to stop plaing it. Because it would make him upset... I think it would make sense if someone that dont like jazz eventually would start to hate that jazz album if that happened. It would start to feel like torture....
This is exactly what happens when people continue to play a game for months or years even if they dont think its fun anymore. Perhaps friends in guilds or all the time they have invested in the game or the habit itself makes them continue. And when they finally quit they really hate the game.
For some people it is hard to recognize when its time to quit. And just do it... And often people like that become haters.
I think this is just how the world goes. One good original idea (or invention), long-lasting repetitions of this one until another good original idea (or invention) comes forward. It takes time to come up with original ones. The first one who found meat eaten raw tasted deliciious might get bored after some time and looked for another way to eat it. But that doesn't mean until they found they could cook to eat they just stop eating meat.
Its good you and I like WoW clones because they are here to stay... People whine and complain about these so called WoW clones, but in reality its just a basic formula devs follow to make a game a MMORPG... if you differ drastically on too many features it becomes another genre. I mean you can polish, improve, and add depth to the features but if you get down to the core of EVERY MMORPG, the systems are all basically the same. Even people who claim GW2 is some revolutionary game that is completely changing the MMORPG genre dont realize that when you take away the fluff features.. The core gameplay is still like all the games that are so called "Wow clones".
I personally hate the term wow clone with a passion, and only use it when discussing how stupid it is to call a game a wow clone in the first place. You can find a feature in ANY MMO game, even outside the RPG genre that has something in common with WOW. I mean, if a game has swords is it a wow clone? If it has orcs? Steampunk vehicles.. elfs, giant rats and snakes and boars and skeletons.
Technically if it has an options menu to adjust graphic settings, its a wow clone too? Or is it the art style, anything that has brighter then life colors, wow clone right? 1-0 hotkey bar, wow clone? The list is literally near infinite.
Ill shutup, but yeah I love wow clones. Cant wait for TOR because ya know what? I loved WOW, and TOR has some great features in common with wow.. I consider TOR to be WOW 2.0 in all but name. Plus cool lightsabers and pew pew blasters..

I call WoW and Everquest clone personaly, because EQ was the first 3d MMO, of course some people would go further saying UO or meridian but i stop at EQ because it was the first 3d game, while games like ragnarok/runescape will be UO clones since it was a 2d game.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I've been gaming for over 3 decades, so when I state something I know it to be true!

Ugh people dont get tired of the same old recycle machine of game studio's ?
I know i am so pls no more UO / EQ / clones, we want something totaly fresh and dandy instead of the puked out copy pasted clones.
I'm not sure if anyone can 'hate' a video game.
I mean, it may not suit your taste, but 'hate'?

Problem is that all the alternatives to the "WoW model" suck something fierce.
Indie garbage and/or far too niche.
I can understand the anti-WoW crowd being frustrated to not have a good, new AAA MMO to play that fits their tastes.
What I can't support is the logic that these people are somehow "better" or "more intelligent" or any some such because they don't like the WoW model.
Get over yourselves first, then we can talk
