New MMO for another old everquest player/

bobugabobuga Member Posts: 4

First post of many hopefully.

I see that someone else was recommended vanguard but I wanted to ask with more of a more specific list of requests.

Okay so I played Everquest for roughly 8 years. I LOVED IT. Sadly with the fading game base, and people that 6-8box I could never get a group or join a top end guild cause they wanted boxers. I refused to box because I didn’t want to spend another 15 a month AND get rid of the social experience of the game. I loved the grinding for exp, the tons of items. Most of all I loved the AA system. A system that was so vast it made it where there was never a feeling of completing the game for me. Ever since I have tried numerous MMOs and most were f2p’s. I liked a lot of them but none of them had what I was really looking for.  I tired the “WOW” experience and honestly it was a step back, I feel like that is a gateway game to get gamers into more serious MMORPG’s.

Okay so now that my past with gaming in MMORPGS has explained what kind of style I like I’ll throw a few quick tid bits in.

  • Prefer a pay to play or a MMORPG with NO item shop.

  • Not so quest heavy that you HAVE to quest to level up.

  • More of a grind happy game.

  • Skill system that has many different ways of being played out.

  • Medium to large game base

  • PVE  mainly but occasional pvp

  • If its new and upcoming it’s a BIG + (I like being one of the newer people in a game but not mandatory)

  • Graphics don’t mean much to me at all but who doesn’t want to look at a great world.

  • Fantasy based if possible.

Thank You for your help in advance everyone and I hope you guys and gals can help me out in finding a new MMORPG to start up in again.

I gotta hand it to you... your game is hard to find. Ok, you may laugh at me and say OMG how can that be, all MMO's are grinders so shut up... but meh... a happy grinding game, that's hard to find. I remember back in the time when I played MMO's with lots of grind, there was drama everywhere, guild battles for spots and so on... hell... I even spent like 6 hours someday just to take a spot for grinding. During this I made like... 0.1% o.o when it should've been more like 40%.

Back to the game you want... Probably closest thing you'll find is Aion. Dunno about population, cause I didn't play it in a while, but you can try a private server, see if you like it, and move to officials and see if you like it. Next thing I can think of is Lineage 2.

But then we got another point from your requirements:  "Skill system that has many different ways of being played out." That's a big no-no from what I've seen in these games. You have different skills that you can max, but the real fun with the skills and builds begins at high-lvl play, from what I've seen, till then... not much of a choice. Probably the game with the most fun skill system is GuildWars. Hands down, haven't seen a game with so many skills per profession. If you choose a core profession, like Necromancer, Elementalist, Warrior, Ranger, Monk you'll have like 140 skills for each(minimum is 80 skills for profession), which you can learn. Trick with GuildWars is you can have 2 professions and have all skills from both of them so that's a lot of skills and builds, as you can change professions anytime. But GuildWars needs to have it's missions done, like 24 for each campaign. After that it's just grind for titles, for money, for equipment, for ur heroes equipment and you can still quest when you feel like it.

Runescape has every single one of those characteristics minus the "new and up-coming" part.  But seriously, RuneScape has all of those qualities and is browser based so no 27 hour download.  I'd give it a try if you haven't already, especially if you're into the grinding part.  There are quests, but you don't have to complete them unless you want certain items that make the game a little easier.  There are always about 100,000 people online at one time.  It is P2P but with a F2P option as well.  Very PvE focused but you can PK in certain areas (Wilderness) and minigames.  It has somewhere near 30 skills now?  And you can level your character any way you want without having to worry about class restrictions and the such.

This could be the complete opposite, but RuneScape has most of these attributes so I'd check it out.

To be honest, this game comes to mind everytime I hear about an old mmorpg.

i wont laugh at you. I understand my kind of game isnt that easy to find. I played guild wars for a while but it was to easy to finish. When all that is left is PVP and you have full honor gear (when i was playing that was best) its gets boring. AION im downloading right now to give it a shot on a private server that seems exremtly intersting and thank you for turning me to it.

Thank you for your suggestion I had never thought about going back to Runescape. I used to play it, i had a mid 80 level account with some fishing and mining. Good times but i quit when they came out with 3d a couple years back.

OHHHH reminds me i should post my most memorable MMORPG moment for when i found out "zezima" was 7 people who shared an account and thats why he was always the best.
