Makes me glad I have never given any personal/financial data to Sony..... you would have thought they'd beefed up their security though after the last run of hacks

You can beef up security all you want but it won't stop anyone who is determined.  Have you seen the epic hacking going on lately with accounts?  Sony is hardly alone.

It's funny that the hackers keep targeting Sony.

I always use virtual/disposable credit card numbers online coz we all know that security online it's a matter of risk mitigation.

It's just a matter of 'when'.

It seems like many places are twisting the story.

PSN/SOE wasn't hacked again, they just tried to access some of the accounts that they already compremised earilier this year. Two completely different things, and those accounts were locked just to be safe until you reset them once again.

    Indeed.

A few months ago, RSA were hacked. If the company that's synonymous with online security was compromised, who can be surprised that others fail to prevent breaches ?

If your company has not be hacked to date, it's most likely because nobody has seriously tried...

    AND?

Just adopt a ho-hum attitude about hacked personal information supposedly "safeguarded" by a company you deal with?  Especially if it repeatedly happens with the same company?  Keep in mind those b*stards with Sony also implemented the clause for customers not being able to sue Sony for their incompetence, and make them accountable for said incompetence?

Maybe Sony should just shut down every webservice they have and get professionals to make their websites ?

/facepalm. Did you not read any of the replies in this topic? No matter how good your security is, no matter how much cash you spend on it, if a hacker wants in, he WILL find a way. It might take a hell of a long time, but it will happen. The only reason people think this story is funny is cause these hackers have a hard on for Sony. What about the other companies who have gotten hacked by these groups? Do they need to hire some "professionals" also? You can only do so much in a realistic world.

And....you make the assumption that SOE is doing nothing against these attacks?  Don't let your hatred of SOE blind you to the reality of computer hacking, its virtually unstoppable, if someone is determined enough.    The finanical institution I work for spends hundreds of millions of dollars battling them with a virtual army dedicated to the task.  Not every firm can afford to be so diligent so yes, you alway risk being hacked.   Up to you to take preventative measures if you're really concerned about it.

We are writing to let you know that we have detected an unauthorized attempt to verify the validity of your Sony Online Entertainment ("SOE") Station Account name and password. We believe there was an attempt to use a scripted application of a large set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database. This attempt appears to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised ID and password lists obtained from other companies, sites or other sources.

To protect you, we have locked your *************** Station Account. To reopen the account, please contact SOE customer service at 1 (858) 537-**** to verify your identity. We will walk you through the password reset process then.

Please note that your credit card number is NOT at risk. As a precaution, please review your account for unusual activity and please contact us at 1 (858) 537-****; we will work with any users with whom we confirm have had unauthorized purchases with account wallet funds, and restore those funds.

We want to take this opportunity to remind our consumers about the increasingly common threat of account theft, as well as the importance of having a strong password and having a username/password combination that is not associated with other online services or sites. We advise you to create a new password that is strong, consisting of a combination of numbers, letters and special characters or symbols.

    Thank you,

    Sony Online Entertainment

    Got this yesturday. its legit.

Two weeks ago, I recieved an email from SOE telling me my PW had been changed. I do not currently play an SOE game but returning to EQ2 at some point is a possibility.  So I called SOE and got it straightened out and of course set up not only a new PW but  a new email addy as well. Earlier this week I get an email, from SOE, stating my account has been locked due to suspicious activity.  Im not going to pursue this and will deal with it , if and when, I decide to play EQ2 again. It does tell me though, that SOE is having some issues.

Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.

As much as I hate to say it, I think Sony not charging money is hurting them.  We all bitch about Xbox Live costing money, but when a M$ spokesperson was asked to comment on the recent Sony hacks, he basically chuckled and said that they will simply conduct business as usual.

Tomorrow's news: One member of Sony staff calls in sick with indigestion. Was it the undercooked food or John Smedley's bad leadership that made him sick? Tune in next time on "let's find every reason to bash Sony."

Please learn to read, Sony was not hacked again.

I guess it's not entirely your fault, the wording of that article is awful.

I played WOW, off and on for about 5 years yes. In that time I never had my account hacked. Now within three weeks I have had two problems with an SOE account that I havnt used in two years. Ironic? Ok, if you say so.

You are right, acounts do get hacked from any game. My WoW nor SOE acount(s) never got hacked either. Then again I rarely heard in/out game people with a SOE acount got hacked, but on WoW people reporting their acounts hacked is as common as sin.

So yeah I do think its funny.
