In a new article related to Star Wars: The Old Republic, MMORPG.com's Som Pourfarzaneh checks in with what is known about PvP yet wonders a bit about how world PvP will play out in the game and differ from open PvP. Check out what Som means by "You got your story in my world PvP" and then leave us a comment or two.
What we don’t know much about yet is how World PvP is going to play out. We know from the PAX panel that it will entail fighting over neutral planets which will have different player-controlled objectives and that Mercenary commendations can be earned to purchase uber gear. We also know that World PvP will allow your NPC companions to join in the fray, unlike Warzones. Other than these few tidbits, we’re unclear as to how SWTOR is going to distinguish itself in open PvP.

woah, we are only two months away!! Dont scare me with that 3 months away statement.
But, open world pvp with objectives is just lame. It failed badly in WHO, because the bg's were simply way more fun and balanced.
So I could care less what they do about it unless they really do revolutionize it.
Some of the best, most fun pvp engagements in WAR initially were in the contested (pvp) public quests. They were mostly small scale and all open world and if Bioware was going to steal a good idea from WAR, that wouldn't be a bad one. As with all the public quests though, they only work well with players so they have to stay accessible and dynamic enough to keep people doing them.

Uhm . . . First off, they HAVE had one beta weekend and are about to have another. I would have thought you would know that when you were writing this article. Other than that I am looking forward to World PvP as well and can't wait to see what kinds of twists they will have for us. I really liked the World Control opens up Raiding opportunities btw.
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"
/facepalm
LoL, im a veteran WAR player and tbh, i dont know what are you talking about. Even with all the problems, War was my best PvP experience in a MMO, and is dead bc the lack of new content and expansions, but as a PvP game is probably the best that you can find atm in the MMO market. People from Mythic working on the PvP in tor = Full of win, even better when the rvr in tor will have vehicles, Bombers, turrets etc, cant wait to know more about that.
All I can say is that it's about time they give us a proper presentation about world pvp, rather than the few tidbits which we'd have chew on so far. We can only speculate at this time. V_V
My brand new bloggity blog.
Before the class imbalances in WAR became apparent, open-world PvP was the absolute best part of that game. Class imbalance is what made it lame (and eventually killed the game).
Fighting for and defending keeps in the PvP lakes was the best time I ever had in MMO gaming. Dynamic, challenging, exciting...where tactics and planning actually made a HUGE difference in the outcome of the battles.
Sneaking a task force out the back door of the keep to flank an attacking force and watching them scurry about the battle field...priceless!
I feel the same way as the poster above me. It's a little worrying how little we've heard about World PvP so far which makes me think it won't have any of the twists that the author suggested. Frankly, I'd be happy if it was as well done as Warhammer Online with a SWTOR theme, as it's the best PvP I've played in any MMO so far. In fact, I hated PvP until a friend got me into Warhammer Online.
Nothing can be better then Open World PvP, especially when there are decent and meaningful objectives. In DAOC for example capturing or defending a keep or tower is just awesome and part of the reason that game is still kicking.
In WAR they captured some of that same dynamic, so fighting again at a keep is just plain fun. I especially liked attacking supply lines as one side or the other tried to bolster their forces.
Here's hoping Mythic can help SWTOR capture some of that same magic.
yea, it was super fun base hoping for a chance at loot. The open world pvp system is awful from warhammer online. "Oh theres 10 people defending? lets go hit the next one" was the mentality of every single player because we all needed the gear at the beginning.
Thats what I hope is abolished with SWTOR, but it appears we will get badges instead, so we will just go "Tat's defended? Lets go hit -insert planet here- instead so we can get 10 badges per hour instead of 3 actually pvping."
but yea, warhammer online was great. lols.
it appears the people above me have nostalgia about WHO, it was never more beneficial to fight at a keep than to just hop to the next, and most players / guilds did that until they were fully geared and then it was just for funsies.
Swtor will be a massive single player subscription based game.
if they had really dope features that were gonna turn the mmo world on it's ear they would've hyped those.
the little they have released... looks very ... same old same old.... hopefully. it being Star Wars, and having the muscle of Bioware behind it... will mean. that even if launch is horri-bad. they'll be able to add in some stuff once level cap rush is done.
I wont buy the game until I know more about open world PvP. There seems to be no way in the world to have any semblence of class balance in this game, which worries me. The developers hardly talk about world PvP even though we're about to launch the game, which worries me. The developers said their focus is PvE endgame content, which worries me. The potential for NPCs to be in the world PvP worries me.
In short, the whole thing looks like it is being done all at the end as an afterthought. No PvP game has ever done well when it was a complete afterthought.
I know right? More depth added to PvP? How terrible!
Balance?!?! In Star Wars? Shouldn't a Jedi or Sith mop the floor with a Smuggler, BH, etc in solo combat? Of course they should .
Same as SWG - know your role and accept your role. If you must "pwn" to be happy roll a force user.
hmm, although I suck at pvp, I really enjoy this aspect of a morg. After reading the article and the comments above, I may step outside my comfort zone and role my character in a pvp world. My concern is usually in a morg I pvp after I'm already pretty much an expert at the game. We'll see
btw for the few doubters above, give it a chance, stay excited, if you look to find crap that's what the game will be for you
So this is an article about PvP in some Star Wars MMO. Only thing is, I don't think we have gotten ANY, ZIP, ZERO, real information about PvP in any current Star Wars MMO that is under development. Actually, re-reading the article, this is an article about nothing. It isn't talking about any particular system, it is simply speculation about somthing that may or may not exist.
As a PvP I think reading this article will be the same as playing the actual game. It might talk about somthing but it has no substance to back it up. Nothing but a hollow shell of a PvP game. That is all this Star Wars mumbo jumbo is turning out to be IMHO.
Have fun beating an NPC to death with your light saber. Because I am just not seeing anything remotely "PvP" about this game. (Or this article)

They have talked about PvP. You just haven't looked hard enough. If you had of spent the time you took to write that post and instead did some research. You would know more about PvP in SWTOR.
Not much of a PVP player, but generally I am only interested in Open World PVP. Arena match PVP always kinda sux.

Actually they have had two, I have been in both weekends. I am looking forward to seeing more of the open world PvP objectives. It has a lot of possibilities for a fun time. Trying to control planets and or PvP objectives. The Friday update gave us a little glimps of the possiblities towards the end.

But just with the info about Tatooine taking 10 to 15 hours for just the player story could mean a lot of open world PvP on a PvP server. As well as other open planets along the way with both factions questing on the same planets. BG's will always be a draw to many, but I could see some good times with open PvP on PvP servers.
How many people long for that "past, simpler, and better world," I wonder, without ever recognizing the truth that perhaps it was they who were simpler and better, and not the world about them?

Not much of a pvp'r but what i have played thus far has been fun
not sure what you consider "real" info but here is what is known about pvp so far

This game has a HEAVY focus on story, and an equally strong focus on PvE. Everything else is secondary. I have not tried the PvP, but heard good things about Huttball. Trust me on this.
If you're the type of player who likes to rush through the leveling to get to the 'good' part, it's doubtful you'll like this game. Trust me on this as well.
+1
I love story + I love pvp. Hard for me play a game that only has half of the equation. From what I've heard the story is the strongest feature, but the PvP is also a little addictive. The only thing I would say is missing is more sandbox elements. But still having in-depth cinematic story and fun PvP in one game is enough for me to buy.
Its now been announced that it will be 20th December in Europe too...

Not into PVP at all, I hope they don't screw this like they did RIFT and put non-consentual PVP in PVE Areas.
Since I'm in the 'Red Zone' I guess it dosen't matter..
