So, I've been thinking about trying out one of the superhero games and I just wanted to get your opinion. What game would you play? DC Universe Online or City of Heroes, although now that I think about it, Champions Online is probably another option. What do you think?

I would go CoH beacuse of all the content that is already there. All three games play well enough, it's just with CoH you have more options and more folks playing i believe
One thing most people are unable to do is retuern to older games,
CoH has a very large content world but grapical its outdated
CO has a great f2p class system and is fun to play but long term and pvp you might wish to sub for it.
DCO is a .. fun action game, but thats it. its high on grapic effects and very shiny but (to me) lacks in story, depth
start whit the old one CoX then Co and then maybe DC if its still running by then
Both are going FTP this year so you can see them both for yourself.
"TO MICHAEL!"
Thanks.
I played CoH when it first came out but must've only played for 30 days and have almost zero recollection of it. I also played DCUO for the PS3 for a week or two before I sold my system... so really didn't get the chance to get too deep into it although from what I hear... you can't get too deep into it because it's lacking in content.
DC is also going f2p this year so i rly believe DC will stay here for a long long time:)
I am not playing DC right now but i did when it lauched, it lacked some end game but the pvp was loads of fun in the open world (on pvp servers) and they had a few updates from the time that i left so i guess end game is better now.
to OP play COH now and when dc universe gets their f2p model out play that for a few weeks and then stick with the game that appealed most to you.
edit: champions online is a big no(in my opinion) its not worth it.
i havent played champions online
but I prefer the gameplay of DCUO over COH (personal taste for the action gameplay)
both COH and CO have trials/f2p -- you are the best judge of what you will like
EQ2 fan sites
IMO Champions is, by a wide margin, the best of the 3 overall - striking a balance in graphics content and gameplay. I've played all 3.
But go forth and figure out for yourself.
City of Heroes is utterly fantastic. That is all.
<-- Long time CoH player and got DC when it came out and played it off and on. CoH f2p is AMAZING! so much fun, based on that, choose CoH. However,DC was a lot of action fun too, if you are a fan of the DC Universe, its a must play. When I saw Zatanna and Supergirl in a mission, i squealed. The worst part about DC is that, you can go through all the content in like a month, if you really tried. If you are looking to just get on and mess around for a bit, DC will be a easier play.
It takes till level like 14 in CoH for things to rly start picking up.
As others said, wait til' they're free and try 'em.
They may be all superhero games, but they all play MUCH different from each other.
CoX is the most like a traditional MMO. Heavily cooldown based, toolbar focused.
CO is a bit more action-based, with a charge-up meter, then stronger induction powers that use up that meter.
DC is full on action based. There's still a toolbar, but the majority of your combat options are done with your move keys and mouse. Movement powers are definitely the smoothest and most heroic of the 3.
Of the bunch I prefer DC's gameplay, but a subbed account can rip through the content, both hero and villain, in under 40 hours. So I'd say it's definitely worth checking out when it goes free to play, but I wouldn't buy it and sub.
CoX is 2nd place IMO. It's both solo AND group friendly with scaling instances and XP bonuses which give you almost full xp for each group kill now matter how big your group is. There's tons of content and lots of character customization. Downsides are it's a bit slow, and the graphics(even with the update from '09) and animations are pretty old, and the audio style is over the top annoying. When you punch somebody it sounds more like a gunshot than... well... its gunshot effects do.
CO has its moments. Lots of costume customization, but power customization is sorely lacking, which is ironic since it's based on the pencil and paper RPG of the same name, which has easily one of the most "free to build ANYTHING" character creation systems out there. Better gfx and animations than CoX, but DC's are much better.
I have not played DCUO, so my vote goes to CoH:Freedom.
I've played CoH back in 05-06,, quit and came back now when freedom went live. And I still love it.
EVE Online 21Days Trial
This.
This now takes less than half an hour, thanks to the low level sewer trial.
Why 14 though? Is it because that's when travel powers got unlocked? You can now take any travel power at level 4.
City of heroes is not udderly fantastic. It's skim milk.. has some nice variety in powers, but really dc is a severe step up for a majority of the content. Then again..COH is sweeping and has a large fan base. Quests are ok.
Screw that, I want to rock with the DC heroes and villains.
For me, it all boils bown to storyline, and how the content plays into it. I mean, I play alot of DDO, and while they have the option of F2P and subscription, the storyline fits along with the content. Also, storyline wise, I have played both CoX and CO, and personally, I think that with Freedom, CoX has the upper hand slightly.
I am actually wondering this exact same thing myself right now. I am a very casual player, quite possibly will never really aspire to end game or anything of the sort. I play mmos for the community and interaction mainly. I like social games like FFXI and games where there is a lot of sitting around and waiting for stuff to happen, group based content where you need to talk with people, coordinate people, and get people together in one spot to get things done.
Based on this I wonder which mmo would be better suited for my tastes. I am looking for a free mmorpg that fits those characteristics.
CoH would likely be the way to go then.
CoH can be...confusing to some, in regard to the F2P status of the game. There are two types of "free" players - Free and Premium. The Free player... well, it is a world of difference compared to a Premium player depending on how long that player played CoX (or how much they have spent in the Paragon Market).
With over three years of Vet Rewards, what I have available to me compared to the new account I created for the girlfriend...heh, kind of painful.
Then again, you can look at the matrix DCUO has stated they will be using. It kind of looks like a no-brainer to spend at least $5 there, eh?
CO...CO... I have nothing good in the least to say about CO. Having been a long time player of Champions (mainly Dark Champions) with the Hero System - I was highly disappointed with the game Cryptic decided to put out. If they had done an actual Champions Online (based on the Hero System)...I would not be typing this...I'd be playing that game right now.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

City of Heroes
CoH has a more traditional MMO combat system, while DCUO has a faster paced action-style combat system. Which is better is a matter of preference. And, obviously, DCUO has the more recognizable IP.
In virtually every other measureable category, however, such as character customization, powersets, gameworld, content, etc, CoH is the superior game. Not by a little bit, by a lot.
Some of that is age. CoH is the culmination of over 7 years of existence, while DCUO is not yet one year old. Still, in my opinion, CoH was deeper on day one than DCUO is now, and has only gotten better with time. In contrast, DCUO suffered from excessively shallow design from the start, and that hasn't improved much since launch.
As far as supers games go, I'd rank them CoH first, CO second, and DCUO a distant third.
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Personally I'd rank Dcuo first and CoH 2nd but followed very closely. CO distant third even with all that extra customization in apprerance everyone still looked and felt like a dime a dozen. That and atleast to me CO was down right boring, not to mention having to whip out the credit card to get anything more.. interesting.
CoH is great, though in some ways it is noticeble the game is slightly dated, one of the reasons I rate this 2nd after Dcuo is because of the more traditional mmo combat system, which Im a bit bored with.
Dcuo is fast pace as stated above and personally I felt Dcuo captured the Super feel to the (my) characters better, granted the hero side does make you feel like a hero and I kinna felt like a named Lakey on the villian side. Another thing I liked about this was each faction offering 3 different Iconic mentors having their own red-line story lines leading you to the max level.
I (still) play both CoH and Dcuo, I would recomment both although ..and it pains me to say this.. if you are looking to try.. wait for Dcuo to go f2p.
Once you get a jetpack on CoH you will never ask which one is better again.
DC ripped batman thou we should all be driving super awsome fast cars with plains and space stations.
I think that DCUO looks way better and I prefer the more action packed combat. But at the same time, it has one of the worst user interfaces Ive seen. It doesnt even get the most simple UI things right (chat, crappy menu's, questjournal). Part of this probably has to do with that this game is also for PS3. But even in console games Ive seen better UI's.
For anyone who is used to play MMO's with mouse and keyboard, DCUO might become a frustrating experience. I would suggest a controller, but personally I dont like them for a MMO. I already need a keyboard to type in chat, which is an important part in MMO's.
As for content, CoH has way more content of course, but the content that DCUO has feels more iconic.
Well for me CO is a good game has quite a bit of content and plays as a faster paced game then CoX. CoX has lots of content and character customization but the F2P version limits you more then CO does. DCUO is a great action combat game for sure and now with all the new end game stuff its really fun but still lacks a little content but they will add more with time. But to me CO DCUO and CoX are all good games I still play CO and CoX waiting on DCUO to go F2P before I get back into it.
