Gamepot has announced that Wizardry Online has officially entered into its open beta phase of development in Japan. So successful is the open beta, the team has had to add extra servers to accommodate over 100,000 registrations on the first day.
Gamepot is anxious to bring Wizardry Online to North American users and is actively seeking publishing partners.
Developed in conjunction with Japanese game studio Headlock Inc., Wizardry Online offers multiplayer features new to the Wizardry series, including party play and player versus player (PvP) combat, while maintaining the classic style for which the series is beloved. Hardcore gamers will revel in the return of the complex dungeons that punctuated earlier iterations, and soon will find that the game is fraught with significant peril: Wizardry Online features permanent death, in which player characters can be removed from the game upon dying, creating a more immersive experience.

You won't find me playing a MMO with perma death. Good luck finding more than a few thousand Western subscribers, let alone keeping that many after they get sick and tired of losing toons all the time.
I agree with Vort.
Perma death is just stupid within the MMO genre.
It's a different kind of MMO - more of the traditional RPG flavor that is still popular in Europe and Japan. I am looking forward to playing on the EU servers because I doubt it will go over well here in the US.
There isn't a "right" or "wrong" way to play, if you want to use a screwdriver to put nails into wood, have at it, simply don't complain when the guy next to you with the hammer is doing it much better and easier. - Allein

I could see them nerfing it for the NA version only because there is quite a few fans of Wiz in NA. We will see
I will definitely be playing this. I was a huge fan of the Wizardry series and the developers of this game have a lot of interesting ideas. Plus with the whole permadeath thing you do have a chance to go to your body within a certain timeframe as a ghost from what I read. Failing that or if you die a lot then yeah you are permanetely dead. This does not bother me, just more incentive to be careful .
I would go for permadeath MMO
I recently got one of the Acquire ports of a Japanese Wizardry to English, and after my first total team wipe, I took a completely different approach to the game. There's a lot more preparation and calcualtion to how i play that game than how I play most other RPGs, which has often been borderline kamizake and with complete reckless abandon.

Perma death isn't stupid. I think it's a great idea. Now if you are a weak person, I understand a little video game being too tough for you. Just stick with WoW or a WoW knock off like Rift or SWTOR. lol
You lose a lot of credability when you start talking like that. Calling people who play a certain type of game 'weak' assumes people who play a different type of video game are 'strong'. In the end you're all fat kids nerding up your computer screen.
I have an issue with perma-death, because I don't want to waste time leveling a character just for it to be completely gone. It's one thing to invest time you could be spending more productively in a character you could enjoy for years. It's another to invest all that time into something that could be gone tomorrow. However, I don't particularly mind Wizardry's version of Perma-death. The character dies, but the progress isn't necessarily lost. I don't remember the details, since it's been a while since I've looked into this game, but I do remember thinking it had potential.

Although not an MMO really, Hardcore mode in D2 was the only way to go once you tried it. You totally played your game differently, spec'd differently etc. How it will actually work here, who knows. What I do know is you will play the game a whole lot different then you would WoW, SWTOR etc, which is a good thing.
I think hardcore play makes the game more about the journey, rather then the destination.
This game looks sick can not wait till it comes to NA

OMG YES! Never.
Sidenote. It is a pity to see how the once great Wizardry fell over the years. This is only the shadow of a shadow of a once great game. This is SO NOT needed.
People don't ask questions to get answers - they ask questions to show how smart they are. - Dogbert
Its not direct permadeath:
Upon death you do a corpse run through an alternate version of reality - the players can't see you, monsters can't see you . In this "underworld" reality, there are different npcs you can only access while dead(some things might require you to go there, actually). However in the underworld, Grim Reapers chase you, so its best to get to your body - if you get killed by grimreaper, bye bye.
With each corpse run, your SOUL degrades. Once it reaches zero, bye bye.
Once you perma-die, you LOSE everything you have ON CHARACTER, HOWEVER, everything in the warehouse is accessible by your next character.
Another note:
Game is HARD. Just like with classic wizardry series, going without a pan or strategy into a dungeon will get you and your party dead fast.

OMFG I can't mash the "I Win" button?! I have to actually play smart? My sense of entitlement can't handle this sort of thing.
Can't wait for this game. Can you corpse camp?

a F2P roguelike MMO with graphics that aren't text symbols? yes please
as soon as i saw Wizardry MMO i was sold, also with prema death i cool with it.
the thing is with permadeath MMO, this game is not for players that love to collect good gear of items or weapons
because all of that can meant nothing inside 1 minute
this is more like for gankers or griefers kind of MMO, not saying they are bad, but this game is definitely not for me because although i love the graphic and the settings,
but i can see me rage when playing this MMO
UNLESS, it's not open world PVP, then it would be fun, but if it's open World PVP, wow, it's gonna be only for the gankers most likely
So What Now?
almost everything you have stated here is incorrect i suggest you read up a bit on thegame and learn more.
I see it the other way around.
With HOW EASY it is to loose EVERYTHING you have, your level, your achievements, your gear means something more than just "how much time of your life you wasted". It actually accounts for you being a good player.
As for ganking and pk - play with players you trust, always backup your best things to warehouse if you fear losing them and actually participate and be a part of community to protect yourself(since this game allows 100 player parties).
Overall I'd say thats improvement over the current mmos. We are back in the times when just shouting "LFG" and waiting a bit won't get you to the top. Where you need to actually play for your enjoyment and to display your skill, instead of pointlessly statbuilding "loot' that means nothing.

Also you people DO know that there's a alignment system - players who have killed at least once will always be recognizable as having killed, not to mention that there's quite a harsh system to punish the murderers.

Im glad ot have read this thread. While permadeath will scare the weak masses, the people trying to experience something might get into this.
The truth is having roadblocks while playing your character only strengthens it, that why good players can overcome while bad players wait for content to get nerfed.
Ill definitely start watching this game more thanks to this
i researched more, so it's Permadeath + able to PK in Raid + Death system like Demon Soul where you have 1 chance to get back to your body as a soul,
this MMO is hardcore, as i stated before, this game only applies for some gamer
definitely not for me, im a semi carebear
having said that, i will still try the MMO out to see how it is applied in the real game play, this is still too early to tell
So What Now?
Almost suddenly and magically,
All the other MMO titles like Rift, FFXIV, and maybe Guild Wars 2 don't really seem to be that appealing to me anymore.
This is the game I am really looking forward to from this moment on.
I'll even look forward much more, to see how the entire Wizardry Online community grows and evolve over time into a wonderful collection of mature no-nonsense players !
