Your best options for PVP right now are Guild Wars or to go into MOBA's such as League of Legends or Bloodline Champions.

Tier 1 PVP In Warhammer Online is also very populated and free, but nowhere near as balanced as the above.

Darkfall is the best PVP game atm if you have the time for it. Provides the biggest rush and challenge in the current market but it is very difficult compared to other games and PVP is not that often because with being a full-loot FFA PVP game, the winner takes all. Most of your time playing would be earning an income for steady character development and to be able to replace what is used, broken, and taken. There is PVP potential around every corner though to keep you on your toes. The combat is funnest in this game.

Guildwars has got to be the best grind-free casual-friendly game for battlegrounds-type PVP. What makes this game unique is having only 8 spells/skills to bring into battle out of hundreds to choose from. Because you can have a secondary class every spell is available to every class so you can find some very unique builds or create one yourself that no one else uses. The PVP crowd in this game has years of experience so I am sure that it would be tough at first and you would probably be called a noob often by irate teammates . .. for at least a couple months probably.

There are other games with PVP but I just mentioned what I consider the best of the best right now and I have played them all.

I remember a time when Shadowbane was the best pvp experience. Since it shut down i've been looking for a good pvp title, but nothing seemed to grab my attention. EVE online was pretty good, but the skill training gets on my nerves too quickly (i like controling how fast i advance). Warhammer online was a more pvp focused WoW... I still haven't found a game that gives me the same rush as shadowbane did. Darkfall looked good, but when i gave it a shot it seemed horribly broken

Planetside is kinda underpopulated nowadays but its something to look at and if it intrests you, keep an eye on PlanetSide 2.

Planetside, and Planetside 2 are 100% PvP classless MMO's and its entirly skill based, you have access to the same gear in PS as 8 year players(you just cant use them all at once) and you will have the HP etc.

    SKYeXile
    TRF - GM - GW2, PS2, WAR, AION, Rift, WoW, WOT....etc...
    Future Crew - High Council. Planetside 1 & 2.

As of now if you really want good pvp why not try this games:

    1. World of Warcraft

    2. Dragon Nest

    3. Vindictus

Thats the best game as of NOW

Same here and really for most long time Shadowbane players.  It was so good at what it did that it ruined you for other games.

Vindictus has no real pvp, wow is the same battlegrounds that got nerfed.

Wow pvp is best in vanilla.

If you want really good pvp theres a few choices

    1. Eve online, although is more a whos got more people game now.

    2. global agenda isnt to bad.

    3. Guild wars is pretty pvp heavy

    4. darkfall is alot like eve (regarding you die you lose it all), however its very buggy and your likely to be killed more than you get kills.

    5. World of tanks is all pvp to my knowledge

    6. Starcraft 2 is good but poorly balanced, Starcraft broodwar has better balance but is riddled with hackers, cheaters, and damn near impossible to find a good ladder game.

    7. Minecraft if you find a pvp server (heh)

    8. battlefield series although they are never updated with new content

    9. Leage of legends is pretty good but gets old quick

    10. WoW and Rift same types of pvp rift has better free content that gets updated more.

    No Counter Strike?

Pretty much if ye want pvp just do shooters and those dota games I guess.

    Alternatively, Mount & Blade Warbands.

EDIT: Yeah mmo pvp is a bit sparse. Planetside, Darkfall, Guild Wars. Those pretty much offer you the extremes of the pvp types to try out.
