I just installed Final Fantasy and spent two days trying to figure it out. I've finally found 4 out of 15 people that will "Trade" and accept the Magic Flyers that I'm handing out, and I'm not real sure how I got the quest to hand them out. I also have some type of gift certificate I'm supposed to give to someone, but can't remember the name or find a history log of my conversation...
Movement is difficult. It appears to be either first person or directly from behind.
Half the time my commands go into "say" and are not executed. The other half, it was the wrong command, anyway.
I'm now able to target someone and attempt to "trade" them a flyer in seconds. But thats it. Have no idea how to swap my equipment around (do I have any equipment?) wouldn't know how to fight anything, if I dared leave town.
The inventory graphics remind me of some 8bit games I used to play. While the People appear to be high res graphics... the scenery almost appears to be a picture that my character is overlaid (so, that might be good or bad, depending on your graphic tastes).
I started a Warrior, thinking that would be the simplist to learn the game with. I selected an elf (eldaan?) thinking that if I didn't like melee I could switch jobs. But this game is not intuitive and the instructions are not user friendly.
I've played DAoC, WoW, EQ, and a couple others I can't remember the names of, so I won't give up, quickly, but unless I can find the key to the command sets...

You talked with Regine at the Magicmart in Port San d'Oria (which is why the quest is called "Flyers for Regine"). Have fun; each city has a "talk to many, many NPCs" quest (in Windurst you have to show off a hat, in Bastok you have to get stamps for a kid's stamp booklet).
The Adventurer's Coupon, yes. In San d'Oria you have to give that to, let's see here...her name's Teila; I bevlieve she's in Port San d'Oria. Can't find a map coord, sorry. You'll get 50 gil for it
OK, controls. I *strongly* recommend you read up in your manual about your controls. To avoid the "every key I hit opens up say" problem, changed your keyboard from standard to compact in the config menu. *Yes*, you have equipment. You have your starting armor already equipped. You have a starting weapon, which is *not* equipped, so equip it before you go out to fight stuff!
Elvaan. Yes, you can change jobs pretty painlessly. You can do this in your mog house. Have you found your mog house yet? (I recall it took my a little bit of time to find it). Your starting weapon in an onion sword, but don't take this to heart; upgrade to an axe when you have money to upgrade.
Read your manual; I can't stress this enough. If you don't understand parts, go back and fool around in the game some and then come back and reread it. You'll find having the practical experience of what they're talking about helps clarify things.
A few more things. Before you go out to fight, make sure you have your weapon equipped, like I said. You select mobs like you do NPCs, except when you hit enter, instead of getting a conversation, you get a menu. Select "Attack" and the fight begins. Before you go out, talk to the gate guard that has "T.K" (Temple Knight) after his name. Ask him to cast Signet on you. While Signet is active on you, the mobs will drop crystals, which will sell for good money at the Auction House. No Signet, no crystals, and you've forgone most of the loot you could've gotten. What server are you on? If you're on Remora, I'd be happy to meet up with you only and see what I can do to help.

Oh, and one more thing, don't be afraid of dying. At higher levels, dying involves an experience point penalty that gets pretty painful the further you advance (it can and will delevel you if you're too close to your previous level) but this doesn't start to kick in until level 4. So where you are, there's basically no penalty.

as Ive stated before about ffxi..It is not newbie friendly. The ui and controls are clunky and deleveling is totaly archaic and harsh. The next expansion really should fix these problems.
I figured out that the / commands will open a command interface, and I can execute those commands easily and painlessly...
Thanks for the name "Teila". I don't recall seeing the name, but that alone is more than I had and that should be enough to track her down.
As for the 15 victems... well, just a matter of finding which of these frenchies needs some toilet paper <muhahahaha>
But, heres my main question (I'm trying to read the book, but important steps are left out) when I want to swap (for example) from walk to run or run to walk... the key is "Z". How do I do that? If I just hit the Z key, it goes straight into "says"... infact, looking at cheat card, any of the "keyboard Controls (configuration 2) all go straight into says. Do I need to remap the keys?
Is there a chat log? History? Where I can scroll back and see who said what to me?
My package included some card game (I'll never load) and "Rise of the Zilart", isn't there another expansion out?
Oh, yeah! I found my Mog house.. and it took me longer to figure out how to leave it than it did to find it <sigh> but I finally got out... Nice room, nice fire, I'll have to become a multigazillionare so I can furnish it... oh, that moogle... is it replacable with something less pokiemanish?
and what do you call the little mule guys with the backpacks? I found two in town, but I thought they were supposed to be mobs?
Also, how do I find out the name of the server? When or where does it tell me, since I didn't get to pick one...
Thank You!!!

You can't remap the keys. However, there is some configuration possible. Your problem is that you're in configuration 1 (full-size keyboard). All the letter-key commands have to be hit with ctrl or alt, otherwise you open up a chat window. If you don't like that, call up the second page of the main menu by hitting dash (-) on your numpad twice (or hitting the center button/scroll wheel on mouse twice or by hitting ctrl-dash twice), select config, misc 2 and select compact keyboard. Now the letter key commands will happen by themselves.
Yes. Hit the plus key (+) on your keypad and hit enter. Your chat window will expand to your entire screen and you can scroll it.
Yes, Chains of Promathia. If you stick with the game, you'll definitely want it, but there's not really anything in it for anyone under level 30, so you can put it off for now. Make sure you've installed Zilart, not only does Square say you should, but there's stuff there that's interesting at level 10 or even lower. CoP is currently the only (separate) expansion. Another has been announced, but no particulars, not even a name or projected release date.
Nope, you're stuck with the cute li'l guy :-). And yes, you *will* be furnishing that room down the road. Note that you can call up a Mog House menu from the main menu there--that's where you change jobs, as well as access your Mog Safe (60 spaces!).
They're Goblins. Oh yes, Goblins are normally mobs, and you will become all too familiar with them; they're *everywhere* out in the field and they aggro (soon your ears will be tuned to pick up the snuffling grunt that announces that a gob you didn't notice has noticed *you*). However the ones in town are merchants and friendly NPCs and you interact with them the same way you do any other NPC or merchant. There are never mobs in town.
It tells you when you log on: "Welcome to Remora! (or whatever)". You can also get it to repeat your logon message (announcing the server name and possibly important server news) with the /smes command. It's also in the character selection screen; when you select a character, it tells you his name, current job, current level in that job, race & sex, current area and...what server ("world") that character is on.
Aren't we all. But the secret is that you only find it a bit at a time....

already some good answers, so I'll just welcome you to Vana'diel and give you a few early pointers-
I would reccomend you install Chains of Promathia by at least lv 25, since the first "cutscene" from that expansion occurs in a connecting "zone" to a common place to level your job from 25-30. And its a great one too!
Hopefully you've explored your country's Auction Houses already, and if not, take some time and just look around. Gil is tough to come by in the beginning simply because the mobs typically don't drop gil, or if they do, its quite meaningless (10-20gil a pop early on). When you do adventure out of town, make sure to get the gate guard to "cast signet" on you. This serves 3 purposes:
1. Mobs will now occassionally drop crystals, which will be one of your best early sellers at the auction house.
2. You will earn conquest points at a rate of 10% of your exp. earned per battle. Conquest points are used to buy items without gil that your country sells.
3. You will help your country in the 3 way regional control race- very important!
Also, as you battle, every once in a while make sure to "organize" your items- do this by selecting "items" from your menu, then hit the "+" key and select "auto". Many items will stack, allowing you to hold 12 crystals in one slot instead of 12.
Play solo battle wise until about level 10. Don't party up until this point, or maybe a 2-3 person party for levels 8-9 if you want to try it.
use crtl-c to check a monster's strength! this way you won't die as much when soloing- you'll quickly learn what you can handle, and that changes at every level!

I haven't had a chance to play, since my last post, so I haven't been able to abuse the info you folks have provided....
However, I did take the time last night to hit the character select screen.
The font is hard to read, the background is light and the fonts are script AND white.. but I think it says I'm on "World Bahamut" or is that Bahamat?
Oh, my characters name is Wormfire.
Should be able to login this holiday weekend and see what I can trip over.
Thanks for the help

Bahamut, yes. Unfortunately, that's not my server. If you go over to ffxi.allakhazam.com you can ask around in their server forums; they have a separate forum for each server. It's also a great general resource for FFXI.

I'm sorry to say, but after a four day weekend, I'm still not comfortable with the keyboard.
In EQ, the wife had a little falling out with a guildy and decided that she needed another game to take a vacation in, she went out and bought us WoW (we had done the Beta, so she was comfortable with this game).
So, now, I weigh in one hand;
WoW : casual gamers game, where I can play on and off randomly with my wife and I know how to play...
and in the other hand, I weigh;
FFXI : a flight simulator with a tediously designed keyboard layout that I still haven't mastered.
I'm sorry to say that I'm going to dump FFXI at this time in favor of something that I don't have to go to school, to learn how to play. Maybe in the future, I'll be back.
I wish you luck and thank you for your help and advice.
Perhaps I will be able to return and try again.

Same here Odenathus. If FFXI every gets a controls/UI rework and if it every becomes a little more noob/casual gamer friendly Id love to play it again
Well you could get the....if i could remember the name of it.....well its like a passport it enables you to change to different servers inside the game and hey it costs in game money not real......wow talking about the game reminds me of how much i miss it.........too bad my characters are now deleted it would be fun to get back into that though
wow u landed on the same server as the Blue Gartr.

FFXI is probly the easiest controlled MMORPGs i've ever seen, not sure why you are having a problem. also dont worry about the graphics, if they look bad either get a new card or change the settings in the menu.
if u want to have fun your whole time playing, change to a Tarutaru and lvl up Blackmage. End game nothing is more powerful than a Taru Blm. and your always needed. never have to worry about getting pt invites.
I'd like to pop in and say that once you've mastered it, FFXI has the smoothest UI ever. It's far better than any other MMO ever.
That said, the only reason I don't play anymore is because of the massive timesink inherent in XI.

My stuff. Yeah, it's a disguised geocities page...
FFXI has the worst default control setup I've every seen, and i've played almost every mmorpg.
Sure it easy after you get used to it, but thats how it is with all games. Its not so bad with a gamepad either. But for first time players, that use mouse/keyboard, its awful.
