I posted this in the Maplestory thread, but in 24 hours it was read all of 5 times, so I thought I'd post it here, in hopes someone has some idea how to fix it. I've even spent over 2 hours on the phone with Microsoft, as well as 2 hours with ATI, and another 3 with the company who makes my mouse. I've posted this in about 5 different forum websites to no avail. All the basic stuff (changing vid card drivers, uninstalling the game, unistalling the mouse and updating it from windowsupdate, etc) has been done, and I even ran some special programs the microsoft guy had me run. The copy of the post is below. If you have any suggestions, please post and help me out. This is one Tech question that blows my mind, and I consider myself an honorary member of the Geek Squad (as I don't work at Best Buy).

I just upgraded to winxp 2 days ago. I tried to run maplestory for the first time today, and it goes to the login screen. I move my mouse, and the game crashes to the desktop, with no error message. I have the latest Catalyst drivers, the latest directx (9.0c). Any idea how to fix it?

Well spent another 2 hours with Microsoft again, and they are stumped. Is there any software to add a partition to an existing HD that's not formatted? Because I've got an 80GB HD 3/4ths full of anime and I don't have a DVD burner, so burning's not an option. I'd like to just add a partition into the 10GB I have left, put win98se on it, dual boot, and run maplestory on it.

    ok heres your options:

    1) Reformat and try again (this if your cheap)

    2) Buy a CD Burner

    3) Buy USB storage

    4) buy portable USB Storage

    5) save all your trouble and play something else, Maplestory isnt worth it.

I have a CD burner. And I happen to enjoy maplestory. I'm 23, and I like the throwback to the 16 bit era, with a twist. I was raised with ataris, I got an NES when it came out, a TG-16 when it came out, and an SNES the follow year. I personally enjoy the game, and want to keep playing it. That's why I asked if there's a way to add in a partition. If not, I'll go buy a 20gb hd or something to run it.

Well, 30 minutes more with MS tech support. Tried a few more things, nothing worked. I was applauded for all the attempts I made on my own to fix it, and for being patient with them while they are trying to help me. Not many people would deal with tech support for 6 hours +. They are continuing to work on it from their end. I'm going to reinstall winxp over the top of itself, and see if that fixes it. If not, any suggestions you guys have would be greatly appreciated. Even if it's crazy and off the wall. Because formatting is NOT a solution, it's an alternative.

    Update:

Just reinstalled WinXP, uninstalled Maplestory, downloaded it again, and installed it again. SAME PROBLEM. I'm about ready to throw in the towel. Looks like my birthday money will be spent on a DVD burner and some media :/

all that time you spent 6 hours + you could have backed up all your important files, reformated, and been back on your game.  i do have one sugestion/ question tho.... how old is your mouse? have you tried plugging in a different one? but anyways save yourself the headache and money and reformat....

Mouse is a little over a year old. I've tried 3 other mice, same thing happens. I have 60GB+ of anime to backup, and to be honest, a CD burner does NOT do a good job. 750MB is about 3 episodes. Would take me a few weeks to burn it all off on CDs. Now you know why I want a partition without reformatting.

Heh, don't I wish. If I had a spare HD, I'd go ahead and install win98se onto it and play maplestory from it.
