Is it better for an MMO to come out with no other competition?

Is it better for an MMO to come out when there are no other big MMOs/games releasing during the same period?

Like WoW was released in a time of no real competition...

Rift did really well (at least first, not sure how it is now) and again, released with no real competition

Other games have done really well, be it MMO or not...when there is no actual competition around.

Then SWTOR is releasing in November, a time of many big games releasing during the same time. Usually, when an MMO does this, it fails. Maybe the MMO itself failed, but I believe time played a big part too.

What is your opinion on this? Not just for SWTOR (I only brought it up, due...well, for one it is a highly hyped MMO and it is releasing with other big name games)...but other MMOs and games as well.

Um, WOW released soon after EQ2 (the sequel to the -- at that point -- biggest MMORPG of all time...)

Yes, but what other blockbuster MMO is scheduled for the end of this year?

With so much hype about TOR, i highly doubt competition would matter much. But in a way it does have competition with GW2, Archeage, Neverwinter, and a great deal of others coming along down the road. You always have competition. Because if they dont improve, add content, make things enjoyable for their customers, well they just go somewhere else.

Just hope this game is all that they say it is. If not, it will be a flop no matter whats released or not released as competition. But i bet you will see a huge number when its released, from there............ thats biowares choice.

I'd say it's better to release with competition (For the customer anyway). Competition would in theory make them try to be better than the others, as fast as possible with the best quality. Where as if they were on their own, they can go their own pace and not worry about losing too much to new competition (since there is none)

Yes. It's great for an MMO to release without competition, for the MMO. As a consumer, not necessarily. A huge amount of people will be turned away by whatever it is they don't like about the game, and then left to play the same old game. Meanwhile, just about everyone else they know is playing the new MMO.

Unfortunately... I am the only one out of our group that is constantly trying out new games and I loved a lot of them, but none of my friends ever gave them a shot because they were always too into WoW. Of course, I would go back after my new MMO attempt had failed, because of the lack of friends. Complete opposite of above...

Kind of a silly question isn't it? Of course it's good for business for any product to release when there is little in the way of competition.

TOR isn't likely to have much to worry about in that department for 6 months anyway, that's plenty of time for the game to either bomb or establish a great start.

Sorry no only for sports games which are trying to most accurate sim of the sport and trying to be the game just about every game is better off consumer to being release at a different time Skyrim and Kingdom of Amular,CoD and Battefield, etc. When a game is clearly better then yes consumer be aviod the worse game but when it is CoD or Battlefield the consumer lose because a good game is going to suffer and most likely it will be Battlefield. When Battlefield could have been released 4 months from now when players are a bit tired of CoD and havbe the full attention on itself.

If the quality is clearly better yes consumer win in a head to head matchup,If the quality is even or close then cosumer loses and it is even worse for mmo because mmo are population monster and needs those extra people

EQ/EQ2 did not hold a candle to WoW at all.

To be honest, in the long run (which MMORPG's are all about) it doesn't matter. Eventually, once the flavour of the month game has settled, and the tourists have either decided to stay or go, all active mmorpgs are in competiton with each other.

Be happy that you know people who play any MMO in the first place.

I dont even have friends that would play WoW.
