Prime Battle for Dominus: Getting Ready for 'Prime' Time

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

MMORPG.com Associate Editor Suzie Ford recently had the opportunity to head to Pitchblack Studios. While there, she met with the team and checked out Prime: Battle for Dominus, a game that is set to bring three-faction PvP back to the forefront of the MMO market. Read on to find out what Suzie discovered about the dev team and about Prime. Let us know what you think in the comments.

Pitchblack Studios was co-founded by Warren Weems and John Kenison, lifelong friends with a lifetime of gaming under their collective belt. They have played, according to Kenison, every MMO that’s been released. Realizing that there hasn’t been a “decent 3-faction MMO” since Dark Age of Camelot, and similarly realizing that no game they created could possibly have fewer than three factions, these two decided to set their own game in motion. Choosing a space-themed setting was as natural as having three factions. “Fantasy has been played out,” said Kenison, “and with space? We can go anywhere with it.”

Looking to be a good game. Hope they continue on the path they have laid out.

All I heard was... "Well aren't you just a little lolly pop triple dipped in psycho."

I hope they can make it to May 2012 with the amount of quality they hope for. Only then can they say its not vaporware. I was expecting 1.5-2 more years of development.

They waited a long time before opening their forums or advertising the game at all. Most of their development was already done by the time anyone publicly heard about the game. Even now they aren't advertising a lot, just releasing developer commentary and updated features on the website itself.

It looks a lot like they saw what everyone else has done, and then did something else. Which seems to be the right thing to do.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

Hope the FvF will be as good as DAoC used to be.

Well I hope the game will succeed, I miss having a game with 3 way combat, it was always fun to see the dominate faction get double teamed by the two weaker factions, where sometimes the dominate still won, sometimes the two factions split the spoils, and any number of other outcomes.  Plus it's not fantasy, sweet lol, though if it were a DAoC 2 of DAoC quality, I could have stomaced a fantasy one.=p

Got a good feeling about this title, could give the big guns like TSW and FW2 a real surprise, especially as they went PvE server only, lame.

This will be an awesome replacement for SWG players.  SWTOR is nothing like SWG.  I'm excited about this because of the crafting system, character development, and genre.  The PVP is intriguing to me, but I've never played Dark Age of Camelot to really comprehend it.

I am excited about this game.  I have often said to myself that if there was a DaoC 2 or a revamp of the original that I would possibly never leave that game for the rest of my gaming life.  Also, it was nice to see an expected release schedule for the game.   It is inspiring to hear about a studio that are dumping thier hearts and souls into this project.  I for one will be providing my support in hopes that this game will bring back my love of  a three faction pvp game with real realm pride.  Thank you for  this feature article.  It truly made my day.

You all should get in the Prime forums. As noted, they are aggressively listen to the community. They have a lot of polls up, so vote.

An independent studio creating a quality release MMORPG? One can only hope...

My problem with this game is the apparent lack of character customization. I think the major flaw MMORPGs today suffer from is the core component to what an RPG really is - taking a character and customizing/defining that character. To me, this looks more like a 3rd Person FPS ... except it has no FPS mechanics, but rather an MMORPG one.

The game looks interesting from a gameplay perspective, but it's the draw to my characters which keeps me playing MMOs. And so few of them do a good job of allowing you to customize your character so that they stand out as an individual. WoW, WAR, Rift - some good recent examples of major MMOs where you feel like just another player with no individuality or identity. Paladin is a paladin. Warlock a warlock. Nothing about you stands out - not even your appearance. If games want to tell us how we are going to play them (by giving us pre-defined classes) then at least let us LOOK like an individual. At least let us have a character that's unique enough to call it "ours". That is, after all, what the original concept behind the MMORPG was about ... but how far we've ventured from those original ideas.

I mean this was a problem in the 90's and early 2000's due to the limits of technology. But I don't want to go another decade with cookie cutter looking characters.

Well, it's a game based on PvP, not on customization.  And little startup companies don't generally have a staff of 60 artists available to crank out costume pieces.

Not that you can't have both, but if you intend to reach primarily for a PvP audience, the focus of development has to be on balance and game play before all else.

I won't say anything about the games play as I'm in the beta and under NDA, but  I will say that this is a very good community with very caring devs and officers.  The kind of team that you want to see succeed for sure.

If they can release sometime May 2012 it would be perfect, as SWTOR will be played forth and back until then allready and people would need a new fix.

As an old DAoC player I have alot of hope for PRIME.

Yeah it was kind of funny how heard about this game.  Maybe 4-5 months ago, I saw a post on this forum, asking if people wanted to participate in a beta for a sci-fi three-faction MMO.  The post had a link to their website, which I checked out, but it was literaly nothing but a text description of the game, and a place to apply for beta.  With very little info to go on, I shrugged it off.  Man, I am sad now that I didn't apply for beta back then.

Game looks pretty awesome imo.  I think the graphics and animations look a bit rough in the videos  I have seen, but they can be improved.  The core features of the game sound great, can't wait to try it out.  I just hope this wont be another Earthrise!

Add frogs and it looks like an awesome upgrade of an older game called "Endless Ages".  Definately excited for this, never heard of it before.

I am a great magician that can tell the future. The greatest thing about DAOC was the world pvp.

10 bucks says this game is either

    A. 6v6v6lol 3 faction combat

    b. world pvp but the best gear is from instances making world pvp worthless

This game will go the way of warhammer.

Do the research.....read through the site. Don't make assumptions here, this game is a sleeping giant. The feature set and the way its combined from a design standpoint is what many of us have been waiting for for years.

Great potential...keep your eye on it!
