World of Warcraft: The New Pet System

In his latest article, MMORPG.com Managing Editor Bill Murphy takes a look at the new pet system coming with Mists of Pandaria, the upcoming Pandaren-filled fourth expansion to Blizzard's World of Warcraft.

Pets in World of Warcraft have traditionally been for little more than show and bragging rights. I remember logging in for the first time in November of 2004 with my Collector's Edition in tow, and excited to pick my mini diablo, my panda, or my zergling pet.  They didn't do anything.  The panda was cute as hell but just slept on the ground while I fought.  All that is about to change when Mists of Pandaria launches and along with many other things the Pet System receives a complete overhaul.

If I read the info coming out of Blizzcon correctly, not all of the pets will be available for use in the new system. I seem to remember them saying there would be a few exceptions, but not listing them specifically. This led me to wonder which ones would not be allowed. The only ones I could come up with were the ones that weren't readily available to all players: anniversary pets, CE pets, TCG pets, ect. It'll be interesting to see which ones, if any, are not allowed to participate and what the owners of those pets think about it.

If TCG pets are allowed, maybe it's a good thing I haven't ebayed my last few remaining copies yet..............

WoW insider's recap of the system. Note last line says almost all pets.

I want a mmorpg where people have gone through misery, have gone through school stuff and actually have had sex even. -sagil

Yeah, seems reasonable that the pets from CE, TGC and Store would be unavailable for the battle system, so as to not place too much value in cash pets.

Pet prices are going to skyrocket in the AH though.

Only blizzard would figure out a way to recreate pokemon.

I'm sure my little children will love this - can anyone recommend a game for the 15 and older crowd? No super cute pandas, please.

Yup, my bet is the best pets will be on the battle.net store.

Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, Eve Online, DCUO, Rift

    Playing: SW:TOR

EVE Online. Nothing cute and cuddly in that game. Just serious space ship business.

SO many people here need to have more confidence in trust in themself. Because to tell bullshit like they do, just to look cool, you really lack of them.

Pet battle is bad.... What you've played it ? No.

Are you a WoW player ? No ? Then get out of this thread.

Pet battle is one of the "Good thing" blizzard could had to their game. It's a FUN mini-game that you can play and have no real effect on the game except providing you fun.

Yeah, I guess something fun in a game is... bad ?

Pet battle is too childish, what child know, is what's fun. Do people lack so much confidence that they are afraid to be called a "child" for playing this ? That's... sad.

When you have nothing to do because you're bored of farming your gears, or you're waiting for a raid, or you're just overall just afk'ing jumping around in town. Well, that's a fun mini-game to pass the time and that can be enjoyable. And that doesn't take as much time to develop for Blizzard and cater more the UI dev than the art or other dev. Which art and some other departement have other stuff to do.

It's a GREAT features for the games.

If you really see this negative, you shouldn't play game anymore. Neither be on gaming forum.

  • I think it's a good idea, and little mini games like this would only help give players more to do in the world.

Other games would benefit from taking advantage of little mini games.

Sounds like fun...I just wish Blizzard had put half this much energy into Engineers recipes in Cata!

Lol, I wouldn't be surprised if this feature got implemented early.

I find it funny that no one mentions this'll lead to tabby cat fights near the old cat lady outside of Stormwind (if the dragon didn't rip her face off after Cata).  Or parrot fights in booty bay.  Let the hilarity ensue.

If they want to expand the depth of activity in the game, add housing.  That will keep people playing longer.

Lets see how to add some depth:

    1. add housing

    2. add alternate advancement (path of titans?!)

    3. make crafting mean something

    4. don't dumb down the game

Loved Aions pet system way more, you did interact with your pet and if you took care of it well, it rewarded you with nice little presents also they did serve some purposes:

    1. enemy alarm

    2. expanded inventory

    3. different outcomes with different food

So sorry but a Chinipokomon system is just *lol* I really don't get the idea of "playing a game within a game".

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

I'm sorry, but did I wake up in the right reality this morning?

Kung Fu bears and freaking Pokemon going into WoW?

I realise Blizz are crapping themselves over SWTOR, but this is the response? "quick, we must enslave the children to our cause!"

    Pretty fecking tragic tbh.....

And, yes, long time Blizz fan, but really, come on, its hard to stay one sometimes.......

    Too many alts!!

Can anyone say pokemon?  Next thing we will see is reality Wow.

So its ok for guild wars to have a pokemon-like mini-game and chinese looking expansion, but not for WoW

Sure it's ok. The only difference though, out of the 10 million people that play WOW, 6 million is in China and other Asian areas. They are the fastest growing base and even though here in the West is where most of Blizzards money comes from off the game, (Blizzards CEO's  own words), in my opinion, with the other new games that are coming out here in the West, it doesn't bode well for continuing success.

I don't think so. Noone sees how cute you decorate your house inside. Even if you can decorate your house outside, it most probably will stand in a spot, no one ever comes by.  But everyone will see you running around with your pets. So for people that like to be seen with shiny bling-bling, pets are the way to go.

The target group of self-promoters and attention ho's is significantly larger than the group of self-contained lovers of architecture and interior design.

Imo this is a good development for the overall MMO market. Many WoW players that are not interested in infantine content will now look elsewhere for more mature games and thus put more pressure on the market to actually create these games.
