Looking for a Free MMORPG

The_GamblesThe_Gambles Member Posts: 25

I just went out and bought a 25$ prepaid mastercard and was planning on renewing my WoW subscription and maybe buying some riot points on League of Legends. I'm getting a surgery rather soon and am gunna be laid up for longer then I'd like so I wanted something to do.

Trouble is I realised after purchasing the prepaid card I didn't really want to play either of those game that much. So now I'm on the hunt for a free to play MMO, I have the card if needed and will maybe spend a few bucks on a game if I really like it.

I played WoW for years and it was really the only mmo that hooked me, so I guess I would like a game similar to that but maybe not a carbon copy thats just a crappier version. Or maybe I want something different who knows, I'll try anything. But there are so many out there I just don't want to spend hours sifting through the F2P garbage just to find a game I like.

Any help is appreciated, thanks very much.

A couple of suggestions...Runes of Magic is an excellent F2P game that plays similar to WoW but different enough to be fresh. Also Allods but imo the leveling is slow in that game. There are numerous P2P games that have recently turned to a hybrid F2P model ( like premium membership ). Lord of the Rings, Fallen Earth, Age of Conan. But of the lot I would suggest Runes of Magic first...although be prepared to spend a few dollars in that games item mall. Hope you find that "feeling again".

Lord of the Rings Online is Free 2  Play with a cash shop. Its VERY grindy if you want it to  be fully F2P. You grind for Turbine points.  You use the points in the cash shop.

Also Runes of Magic is almost identical to WOW. And is Free 2 Play with a cash shop. Also grindy.

Both can be very fun in short bursts. In my opinion.  Happy gaming!:)

I agree with the suggestion of RoM, but only if you have at least 2 gigs, preferably 4, of RAM in your system.  They've improved the graphics quite a bit and it loves memory and doesn't run well if memory is low (based on my trying to run it with 1 gig).

I'm also agreeing with Allods.  The art style feels very WoW-like, it runs well.  Levels used to be very slow.  I think some of this may have changed since I played last (was at release).

If you really love questing and would find interest in a game where one of the main objectives is raising your NPC companion, then one to look at would be Aika.

Lord of the Rings Online isn't one I've played personally, but it looks good and is a PVE centric storyline based themepark.

Also from Turbine is Dungeons and Dragons Online.  Heavily instanced, lots of dungeon quests, no kill XP at all.  It's non-stop questing.

The problem is everyone does not have the same taste in games as you do.  You are going to have to do your own research in order to find the right fit.

You're right, but a crap ton of people played WoW and I liked that. So suggestions always help. I could look for months with all the F2P stuff out there and have never stumbled upon Runes of Magic or Allods, I'm downloading both right now. I'm also gunna try LOTRO as I had no idea it went free.

Thanks to everyone for the help, a little direction and I just may have found a game I will like. I'll post back here tomo after my initial experiences with the games.

    Thanks again guys!

I've been playing Fallen Earth sense it went free to play.  I gotta say, this game is fun.  Don't download it though if you want an easy game, this game isn't.  It drops you in a post apocolyptic earth with a metal pipe, an axe and a bb gun.  Craft and fight for everything.  Wish I would have tried this sooner.

If you only want PvE then Runes of Magic is quite good, however dont expect to get a fair shake in PvP since the cash shop is full of pay to win items and you will need to splash a little cash for a permanent mount.

if you dont mind sc-fi / post apoc setting for your MMORPG goodness then Fallen Earth recently went free to play and as a former subscriber I can happily report that the game is better than ever and right now the cash shop is only really for convenience items. The main thing I always liked about FE is that the game will challenge you, its not a walk along mindlessly grinding, upgrading & leveling. It takes smarts to survive and progress.

  • I have been enjoying Fallen Earth and LOTRO, mainly.

This is true. IF you do decide to try it you may want to avail yourself of what ever knowledge resources there are about this game ( which are few). It's defininately not a hand holding game =)

I don't know if you are gonna like it, but i would tell you to try vindictus, as it's a really good game both in graphic and gameplay, it isn't that developed now, but it will come, you should really check it out it's great :3
