Everyone claims they want games with some originality but then they bolt because the game does not work the exact way they want and the pressure to change a game has begun before it even starts. We can't all have our ways.
This is true but a game also needs to make sure what it is changing is not the simple things that already work well and turn them into something worse. If it is change from great to well sort of great i am ok with. However there was that game that thought taking a hotbar and crunching it into a spinning wheel with only 4 choices at a time would be a good idea, left me shaking my head in disbelief at such stupidity.
I think this game will be different enoguh that we really shouldn't judge it on other games ,other than the usual criteria, does it have content above and beyond normal pvp and quests?I also think this is one game that we definitley need to wait a lot longer before judging it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Funcom said "only cosmetic" items for AoC too. Then, they sold items that clearly gave an advantage. Fact is, when revenues flatten/decline or fail to reach a desired point they will sell anything they want in the cash shop. Or, as they did in AoC they will include advantageous items if u buy subscriptions for xx months, which is PTW in sheeps clothing.

This.
One of biggest reasons I hate cash shop. Once they are in game, you don't know an day and hour when 'advantage' or even 'p2w' item can land there, ridiculing your previous efforts in a game.
Not to mention that usually best comsetics are in shop also. To some players cosmetics, are almost as important as 'gear'. Hell I know some that those things are more important than gear and combat.
“The Secret World is an intriguing, exciting, and confusing MMO proposition. The game is primarily story focused, whilst also massively multiplayer, but players can also opt for a purely solo experience.”
So players can play the MMO without seeing another player? Or is he just saying you don’t have to group with anyone? If the later what he said describes every other modern MMO on the market, so whats the big deal?
I am keen on it not being open world pvp, but what they decided to do from there is important. Most modern MMMO’s go down the instance route, a zone you never see outside of pvp and all you do is fight. Lotro have a ton of quests in their pvp zone, Daoc had zones which where fought over. If we just get a glorified arena it makes pvp repetitive to the point of bordom.
We talked about the cash shop in the last thread, it does not bode well, but lets see what it launches with. That will be the litmus test of where the cash shop is going.

Do you have abelievable source confirming your argumentation?

Kinda treating diffrent kind of players uneven
P2P games take an extremly long time, normally only if they are in danger of shutting down, to become P2W. F2P games are more based on the whole concept so it is more common there.
I am cool with a cash shop for visual effects. I have seen it work well in competative games like LOL. It gives another revenue source to reduce pressure on the concept of rasing the basic subscription or cutting back on development.
If you just want core good gameplay, fine your set. If you want that and additional cosmetic options, fine pay little extra for exactly what you want.
In the end we play these games for enjoyment, if something comes along be it mechanics changes or imbalancing from a cash shop, to take away the enjoyment we can just option to not play.
It can have an effect. Look at what happened with EVE online when they went the wrong direction. Players made the choice to quit due to the change and for once a developer actually took note, reacting to their customer base.
I think it is good to have the start on this game to be available as solo experience. You know a new game, new things and all that is when you would like to take your time and get familiar with all the required things.. unless you have a friend yelling in ventrilo all the time what to do.
"OMFG COME HERE FFS FAST YOU GOTTA SEE THIS!!!! EVERYONE HELP ME OUT FFS!!"
or
"Lol move faster I want to be the first to..."
and you are like..
" -.- give me a sec i need to find this thing out first".
And at the end of the day you figure you didnt enjoy the starting experience that much.
Hmmm. Let's see, I'm limited in the number of skills I can equip at any given time.
Um...NO. Same reason I don't play Guild Wars.
What leads game developers to think we want limitations? Limits on available skills means simple math equations for the game engine to compute Group Damage Combinations. In other words, there's no chaos. Everyone just hits the button called for to complete their role in a combination and there's only a whopping 8 skills available per toon to choose from at any given time. Everyone selects their 8 and after that it's all simple math for a game to decide what to do when certain skills are completed in a certain order to complete the chain for landing a group combo.
I'll take a game that gives stances, multiple ranged and melee skills, buffs and etc. available to me and my cohorts whenever and more imprtantly wherever we friggin' feel like using them, thanks. 20-odd active skills per toon means more chaos/variety.
Too bad. I was looking forward to the original concept, but a limited number of skills available at any given time equals simplistic non-fun.
Moving onl.
Very ignorant comment from someone who obviously know nothing about the game. The persistent PvP areas and all the dungeons have anima wells that let you select any preset of skills you've already made, or make a new one. And there is no limit to how many you can save.
What you chose earlier ineffective for this battle? Switch out.
I have high hopes for this game but am concerned about the chosen launch period. It seems too early and Funcom has a history of launching their MMOs in an unfinished state.
I hope this one doesn't because that is the first thing players familiar with Funcum will be looking for.
Initial work on the game started in 2002...paused...resumed in 2006...paused...resumed in 2007....paused...resumed in 2008...trimmed in 2009, delayed...EA signed on to co-pub 2011....
...it is that last thing more than anything Funcom has done or not done that bothers me.
EA...blecch.
RIFT started around 2006...released in March this year.
So a game that has been off and on since 2002 to be released ten years later, lol - does not seem too soon.
Just that trmming in 2009, EA signing on... maybe I'll just never forgive them for EnB, eh?
All the development time on the planet won't avail this game if it releases in the same unfinished state Funcom's previous two games released in.
I like the premise of the game and will be playing it regardless. But a bad launch will murder what could be the best of the games launching in the next 12 months.

Yeah, Of the so called upcoming big three this is the one I had hopes for. A cash shop pretty much killed any excitement I may have had. I agree that cosmetics are important to many folks and game devs know this as well. They can add cosmetics to a CS and point out how its only fluff and gives no advantage.
Really? This game sucks and Im not having fun? Im going to unsub right now. Thanks for the tip.
BALANCE... as a concept is misunderstood.. In a 'reality' based game there is NO balance. There is WHAT THERE IS only.. a newer character could kill an older player, with the right placed shot or better awareness in a given situation. A more experienced and 'grown' character has more 'things' at their disposal and perhaps more 'power' but can still DIE! I think that is what makes this game or will make this game GREAT!!! If you choose a bad combination of skills and resources... hey you are %##$ out of luck and it's your fault! The good thing is you are not stuck there because you can always add or move your character in any direction you feel and then put in the time to learn to use your skills!!! AWESOME concept!!! Let's see how it works in game!!!
I find it a bit funny really, how much it offends some of ya'll about a cash-shop.... Sorry to braeak it to you, but it's the norm in mmorpg's.
And honestly, it's a great idea, if implemented ethically - and by that I mean: you should be able to earn any/all cash-shop items in-game, with proportional value.

If you think that their cash shop won't have better skills or items in it, then go play AOC and look at their cash shop.
For example, one of the things you can buy in the cash shop, if paying as a ranger, is an upgraded version of a skill called Deft Stabs. You CANNOT get this rank of that skill without buying it.
Honestly, this game looks cool but it IS going to be P2W and P2LookCool.

But this calls into question the value of time...
Bob is married, has two kids, and a dog. He has a great paying job.
Joe is single. No kids. No pet. He works part time.
Bob does not have much time, but he's got money to spare.
Joe does not have much money, but he needs something other to do than watch the grass grow.
Bob can buy things in moments that might take Joe days, weeks, even months to do.
Bob will argue that is fair, because he should not have to fall behind Joe just because Joe has more time to play.
Joe will aruge that is not fair, because he should not have to fall behind Bob just because Bob had more money to spend.
Given that MMORPGs were about the journey rather than the destination... I'm going to lean toward how Joe feels.
Given that many that play MMOGLs these days do not care about the journey... I'm going to guess they lean toward how Bob feels.
I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Balance is a non issue in this gams since all skills are available to all characters, though to be honest it might lead to rampant FOTM characters.
