NCSoft Lays Off a Number of NA Employees

RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

Massively.com is reporting that NCSoft has laid off a number of people in their Austin, Brighton, and Seattle offices.  The announced purpose is" to put a greater focus on the success of the Western-developed games from NCsoft, and the long-term services MMOs require, we announced a global restructuring to our Western publishing team."

http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/10/27/layoffs-hit-ncsofts-north-american-offices/

NCSoft stated that the layoffs constitute less than 2% of their global workforce, but did not specify the percentage of their NA workforce this represented.

Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.

Hopefully they kicked out the branch/responsibles that have drawn in/recommended Garriot, supported and covered up his failure on TR till the end for years...Garriot fanboys can turn in circles how often they want, this guy, was less worth and productive than any noname Chinese crappy F2P producer would have been at 5% of the cost and quarter of the time not even considering in his stock gambling fraud he only could have won thanks to the American jury system.

On the other hand the EU L2 team is likely part of that. Obvious since another publisher takes over potentially even reemploying some of them.

u mad bro? your just jealous garriot made the best mmo of all time, UO.

After having some time with nCWest I wish it would simply dissapear. They are terrible and have no idea how to run an mmo. I have a feeling NCkorea is tired of them too and they will close them someday.

Based on a year's experience of NCwest with Aion, it appeared that the western side was just a message forwarder back to the Korean HQ.

Several posts from NC tended to confirm this, along the lines of " we have forwarded the issue to our head quarters and are waiting a response, we will let you know......"

If they are now shrinking the western side, then it would suggest they just want to focus on their core eastern market and anyone over here who wants to play their games will just just have to live with that.

NCSoft is not a bad company compare to the alternatives. I cannot imagine GW1 and GW2 being under EA or Activision *shudders*

    Ready for GW2!!!

I think it's a result of eastern market and western market... Eastern market really likes grinding games like Aion turned out to be (which is sad, I was really excited about that game till I bought it) so it kinda has more market share there than it has with western and EU part since we really don't like grinding games... If or when GW2 starts to grow they'll start employing more ppl in western part as well since it'll require lots of ppl for dev and maintaince (together with ANet since they're not letting ncsoft mess up their game I hope :D)...

And I really don't think of NCsoft as a bad company, as stated above my post, I can't imagine GW1 or GW2 being in the hands of even worse company such as EA or SOE. Activision ain't that bad but they're blizzard so that's not an option.

This news is nothing we should get excited about I think. :)

Well the holidays are coming around, time for lay offs.

Anyway, it sounds like NCSoft is giving up trying to westernize their own developed mmos. So those looking forward to Blade and Soul in the US and Europe, good luck to you,.

I don't think it's about westernizing the game, rather shoving eastern game philosophy down the western's throat. Eventually, the west will throw it up.

Well I do think it's more lip service that NCSoft has given in regards to "westernizing" their games. I mean NCWest is just a redundant middle man for NCSoft Korea. So I suppose they are just giving up any pretense to this and getting rid of that middleman.

    Correction:

3rd quarter results and 4th quarter projections for tax purposes are due. Better close that gap before shareholders shit a brick over missing analysts projections.

e.g. if they were expected to post 22 million in revenue for year end but only have 18 million as it stands, it is possible to get back to 22 million by cutting costs (4 mil) within 13 weeks more-so then it is to try and drum up an extra 4 million in sales.

Cutting payroll is often the only option to bring down costs quickly to meet the expectations set by the real customers, the shareholders.

I actually don't think NCSoft is that bad of a game company considering others.

They have had their swings and their misses.

I bet GW2 will bring in a ton of revenue for them.

The question is will it bring in the ton of revenue the investored and analysts esitmated, or fall short.

Odd, though I quickly tire of their games, perhaps the  eastern theme MMO's aren't my taste, but I did find their customer support to be outstanding.  Good luck to those laid off for the holidays
