all i played is WoW so far. survival and living off the land is a plus. i would like to solo pve most of the time but don't mind grouping. don't care to be bossed by guilds. don't care if the game is out or soon to be released.
You know alot of people may disagree with me but you should check out LOTRO. I just started playing this lst week but the story and exploration definetly outwys the lesser graphics. The graphics arent bsolutely horrible either. Definetly behind the times...
Its really worth it. Ignore everyone that going to hate on my comment and check it out before you make a call on it
If you do hit me up on Alya shard. Ticklish is the name!
Vangard is fun. And if u don't mind indie prodcuts, mortal online and xsyon( i haven't checked up on this game in months, so not sure of its current state).
I would say EverQuest also. Pick a foraging class if you wish to live off the land (ranger, druid). Very soloable game now with the addition of mercenaries. The world is huge and there are endless places to go level and explore.
I'll add to what another player offered; lord of the rings "can" have some good exploration. The world is pretty large now and one can find some cool things. Unfortunatley it's also possible to discover things where you don't have the appropriate quest and can't get in.
And there's no living off the land though one could forage materials.

atm there is no good up to date mmo with big world cause all devs are dam money makers and just make shallow, quest to quest straigth mmos like aion and rift and 99% of em just quest and go further down the road for new quest and shit.that it,Played wow and got impressed by its huge world but sad only that game.Just have to wait or play some single player rpgs like fallout or somethin else cause to search for mmo now aint worth it.

Fallen earth is the absolutely perfect game for you. Survivial, living off land, solo pve, tons of exploration.

Asheron's Call, Vanguard or Fallen Earth. AC is older graphics, but all you do is run around exploring. VG and FE are updated graphics over AC and have a lot to explore. You can get lost in VG cities.
I tried Vanguard recently, and really enjoyed it, until I got lost in a city. If you want exploring, it has it in bucket loads, too much for me, as it seemed laggy in city. (My connection or whatever)
Only in Asheron's Call will you find stuff like Paul Monogua and Babe the Blue Auroch out in the middle of nowhere standing 40 feet tall and you can't see them until you're a hundred feet or so away because of all the trees. There's the Rock of Yanshi, the floating cask of Nanto...

Exploration is 1/3 of the game, and something it pushes you to do, rather than a minor, optional side activity as in most of the other games people have mentioned.
I think Darkfall is funnest exploration game by far! It has the biggest world with no instances and would probably take over a year to explore through everything. A lot of people mentioned Vanguard but if you are exploring in Vanguard you have to avoid the red circles around higher level mobs so end up trying to find a way around the mobs that one-shot you instead of just choosing your own path and theres not much of a point in it because you will not find anything useful in a zone outside of your level range. Many parts of it, esp. mid 20s and 30s, really suck to solo through and if you do than you are going to wear gimped gear because a group is needed for most of the quests with good rewards. Vangaurd has a huge world though with several quest-chains all over the place so if you get bored with one you can go to a different continent to start another. Darkfall is nothing like WoW in the sense of how the combat is and how it feels to control your character but with a little customizing your controls and practice I think the combat, exploring, and dungeon crawling is the funnest because its dangerous and the combat is very fast-paced and challenging so if you are a skilled gamer you will do good. Darkfall has no levels and you increase skill in what you use but it doesn't have as many ways to customize your character as other MMORPGs (end-game character is pretty much either a mage or an archer with magic blocked while everyone uses melee). Anyways, its worth checking out if you like an open world and exploration. Lots of stuff to solo PVE through but the best content is hard without a group.

Everquest 2. You'll go crazy just exploring people's houses, nevermind the actual game content.

Everquest. It is old and somewhat dated in graphics, but it have a lot more exploration than any modern MMO.
Vanguard if it must have good graphics as well, but it is smaller than EQ.
I'd agree with Vanguard. Exploration has not existed since, and doesn't really.

put me down for EQ2. It's a very well made game. Lots of different types of areas to explore, even at lower levels.
==========================
There are a huge number of zones, yes. But most of them are pretty small from an exploration point of view.
It is worth a look, a good game but EQ and VG are both a lot better for exploration purpose since they are so much larger.
Keep your eye on Xsyon, it's all about survival and living off the land. Game has some growing to do but it has a lot of possibilities.

Vanguard and Ryzom were two I sort of enjoyed exploring, hell I had fun exploring in wow.
