Getting into Rift

NrthnStar5NrthnStar5 Member UncommonPosts: 16

I bought Rift shortly after it came out... I played a toon to level 16 and then stopped. On Paper, Rift sounds almost perfect for me, however for some reason it doesn't grab me.

Looking at the videos and content of the game, I want to maybe give it another go. Are there any players who felt at first like the game didn't grab hold of them, but then at some point it did? I'd like to know the turning point for those who started out skeptical, but then really go into the game.

I'm currently in the same boat actually. I bought it at launch. Hell I even pre-ordered the physical collector's edition ($80 IIRC). I played for the first month, but was distracted by other things. My friends also left the game, but I was still interested, but I hit a point where I wasn't wanting to do-over without them.

I'm currently thinking of resubbing though, and starting fresh on a new server, maybe even RP. Anyone have any input on RP servers for rift? What about RP PVP servers?

Awesome recommendation! I did a quick look on the server's forum, and it looks like the server community is really good.

honestly, this game seemed to fail at grabing and holding a lot of players attention. Most of us looked over, and maybe even played for a bit, but dropping this game was just as, if not easier, than picking it up.

I have been looking for an MMO to get into until TOR, but with out people to game with, its just a lost cause, I can't find anyone to game with, and those that say they want to, are gone as fast as they come :( can't trust anyone.

At any rate I am always looking for people to game with, PM me anytime.

I just came back to the game myself last weekend. I played for a few weeks after release but at that point I was just so burned out on MMOs that I couldn't enjoy it at all. I'm enjoying it so far this time, they seem to have refined some things. I like that it tells you when rifts are happening in different zones now (I don't think it did at release but I could be wrong). I play on wolfsbane or something like that, wolf something lol. It's one of the most heavily populated servers I believe, but despite that it seems to be really friendly. There are a few trolls but compared to WoW it's like the most mature place in the world.

One of the better part of Rift is the name that some of these guru's call these builds. There is the Hoko spec, SabDancer, Asstalker (serious about the name), Riftknight for warriors, Shamicar, Inquisicar, Bloodstalker, Blinkblade, BladeDancer

It seems if you come up with a good build and a catchy name you can gain some internet fame. I think everyone in Rift has heard of the Hoko spec

Playing Bard/Ranger/Nightblade points 22/6/6. Loving the bard tree alot as you can see, lots of support abilities and a couple slight heals spells coupled with my boar (Pigbert) really gives me some survivability.

While the game does seem to be lacking that something special, I am enjoying my time in the game howerver long or short that time may end up being.

It bored the tits off me.  I do not want to have to read endless forums for the prefect build, and I do not want to grind endless dungeons for my gear: surely that removes all skill and allows a moron to be a king.  This is what I truly dislike about game like this, frankly it seems that while I am at work my taxes are spent on some tit grinding for an unfair advantage.  F2P and cash shops appeal more and more.

Wait... what? Your taxes go straight to Trion? Since when?

No, he was referring to the theoretical 'tit' grinding all day becasue he/she lives off some sort of welfare/unemployment.

If you are already bored of it by level 16, it won't get any better for you.  Rift generally becomes more tedious the longer you play it, which is why many people leave after a few months.  So if you only played it to level 16 and it has failed to grab you, chances are this game won't get any better.   Maybe experiment with some different classes/soul combinations and see if you can find one that excites you, but generally the soul system, while great in concept, isn't enough to compensate for the dull gameplay and drab world.

my problem first time round was i overplayed and burnt out..second time around i,m enjoying it more..i,m taking my time .another thing though is it's kind of lonely because most toons are max lvl..yoiu do see a few running around but not has many as release date obviously.my advice is do what your gut tells you and not what others tell you to m8..its you paying the money after all.has for getting into the game, probably wont feel like your really gettin into it til you catch up with everyone else.

Just like any other mmo out there, you gotta find your niche. Find the things you enjoy about it and play those aspects. If you can't find anything, then the game probably isn't for you.

Personally, I enjoy crafting, open world pvp and raids, role playing, and exploring. Rift's open world content is good enough to keep me subbed for a while longer. And the rp community on my server is healthy so I'm pretty content there. Crafting is a couple steps above WoW which isn't saying a whole lot but at least its an improvement. Artifact collecting and lilttle hidden easter eggs here and there along with great graphics make exploration pretty fun. Although I wish the game world was larger. The next patch is a very welcome addition to the level cap land mass.

    Anyway, hope that helps.

i'm enjoying it more the second time myself.

the first time i tried to bangzoom to the end game but got burned out about level 45.  this time i'm enjoying myself and leveling an alt along the way and i'm having fun.  also one more vote from me to  try Faeblight.

in the end the game DID get better over the months i didnt play, but what REALLY got better was my attitude towards games.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

My favourite of all the Rift build names has to be the Duracell. Never leveled as one, because I was too busy killing wolves with my Shamicar.

As for getting into Rift, I had no trouble getting into it because I tried the Trial to level 15 (twice), to get a good enough idea on what to expect. Not much deferred, though I did find the level 35-50 questing to be incredibly boring. Only time that was fun was when I made some good friends, whilst leveling my Warrior and had so many random fun moments. What's sad is that barely anyone would have as fun an experience I had, now that most people are level 50 and the leveling zones only have a few dozen people at the most.

Played for about 6 months or so I guess. The first 20 levels being new to the game where awesome. Once you hit 20 you kind of start to expect it to take longer to level but it doesn't. You are quickly pushed through the few zones available to level 50. At this point you grind instances to gear up if you have not leveled to 50 grinding them already.

    At this point you can:

    A. Grind rifts to get planerite to buy squirrels because there really isn't that much available once you get the ascended skills. The world/zone events get very boring also as mechanics are ridiculously easy and once you get your focus and synergy up to snuff the crystals collect dust.

    B. Continue to grind instances and get plaques so they can collect dust because there is not anything to spend them on. Now if you do not raid you can get 1 Mark a day towards your Tier 1 raid gear but grass grows faster than this method. (of coarse if you don't raid why do you need raid gear?)

    C. Raid - If this is the way your going to go you probably already know the drill here. You can find a hardcore guild that has all the normal rules like any other mmo or you can try and find a casual guild and get drunk before the raid to dull the pain on the 20 mans. There are two 10 mans that are fun and pretty easy to put groups together for, But they are on a week timer that resets on Wednesday. The Raid Rifts are ok too I suppose but there are four different types available.

    D. Crafting-you can run around picking flowers and mining all day like any other mmo.

    E. PVP - This has never really been my cup of tea. However I can't help but think this would also get a little old with only a handful of warfronts available. This is also a gear grind situation as well. PVE and PVP is totally different.  Some gear is still interchangeable but they made a lot of changes to the pvp gear not to long ago. They have recently introduced PVP rift to encourage world pvp. Not real sure how that's going but I never really seen full raids involved in these.

F: oh I almost forgot....You can rep grind which is as fun as it has always been.

It's a beautiful game but thats not enough to keep me coming back for more. The Class system is really cool until you arrive at end game. Then you end up conforming to the dps/hps (if you want to group) parser/meter and find yourself in a cookie cutter build mashing the same 3 buttons all day that is aided by the macro system that is in game. Lorewise I don't know know really. I have never been a big lore monkey. If I feel like reading I'll read a book.

As I don’t know the OP's mmo history I don't know if this applies, but for me the problem with RIft, GnHs, AION, and AoC and I fear SWTOR is that they are WoW clones. Now I don't mean that in a bad way, I loved WoW, but after I had my fill of it, and decided to try other mmo's I found they were too similar, in good ways, such as the UI, learning curve, etc, but also bad ways, gear grind, limited classes, and the boring combat mechanics.

Parts of my brain still thinks I am playing WoW with them, and sometimes, such as the identical powers/combat of Aion's Spiritmaster with WoW's Warlock I get bored even faster. There is not enough attention required with combat when stats and gear, not skill, determine too much of the outcome. Thats why I find either stratagy games or shooters keep my attention longer now. Lets hope mmos such as GW2 or TERA are different.
