Piranha Games and InfiniteGame Publishing have announced MechWarrior Online. Little else is known about the game other than its tentative release date of late 2012.
Piranha Games was "rebooted" over three years ago and announced that it was working on a MechWarrior title in 2009. In early 2011, Piranha obtained the rights to the MechWarrior IP. After researching various revenue models, the team has decided to adopt a free to play / microtransaction system.
MechWarrior Online is being developed as a PC title. Fans interested in the game can register their pilot's name on the official MechWarrior Online site.

Let's hope it's like eve online, but with combat like what we are used to with the mechwarrior franchise.
Too bad. I probably would have been really interested in this, I love Mech Warrior... but I won't support this payment model, regardless of the franchise. *shrug*
From the description, it's more like a lobby based shooter than an mmorpg with a world to walk around in.
** edit **
The game is PvP only, with no intention of creating any sort of PvE (single player or co-op). There are upgrades to your mech(s) available. So, nothing at all like Eve. More like Call of Duty I think.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Lets all hope it goes better then the First Mechwarrior MMO!

Well, not a big fan of the F2P model. I have yet to see a game this has really imrpoved. FE, sucks now. LotRO community has gone to hell. Quit CO long before it went F2P so no idea there. And then you have all the P2 Win games...and that sucks too.
I will check it out, because I love the world. But I am not particularly optimistic. In the perfect world I would love to see this done by a triple A developer, on a huge budget with some innovation. Given the short release date, I smell a low end game coming. =(
Short release date? Did you even read the dev blog? They've been working on the game since 2008 and it won't be released till some time in 2012. I'd say 4 years of effort is a pretty decent development time. As for gameplay, it seems to sound similar to WoT with an over arching non combat system to manage your player unit and missions you undertake as a mercenary.
They are all pay to win eventually. You cannot play any of them for any significant period without spending money on them and it is usually more than your normal sub rate. If you enjoy pay to win games, that is fine, but the vast majority of people on this forum detest such. Basically when a publisher decides to go f2p, they are essentially saying that the game is not good enough to support a subscription model.
Always enjoyed Mechwarrior games and will give this game a look even though it is f2p.
f2p is the korean standart sub model and its coming over.
Try the market a game with a monthly sub base in western region and all you get from people is funny looks.
Meh, ive been hoping this would come along ever since trying WoT. The ftp/microtransaction model tells me it will either be a subpar game not worthy of a subscription or a pay to win waste of time .
Another really good game that is going to become a "pay to win" microtransaction mess. NO THANKS!
Let's party like it is 1863!
Looks good so far. Sorry but I won't buy into the P2W hysteria. I'll wait to see what they do with the model before I start crying about.
OMFG!!! I didn't know anyone else on this site played MPBT3025!!
I loved that game. and i'm TOOOOOOO excited for MechWarrior Online. Been waiting for a legitimate Mech based MMO ever since MPBT3025 closed. (btw the community in mpbt3025 all seemed to really like it and were bummed when it closed. It never left alpha stage, and even then, polls were taken and the majority of the playerbase in alpha was already willing to shell out the box price + monthly sub )
I tried Perpetuum and was greatly disappointed. Felt a lot more like EVE + Mini-RC Robots than a Mech styled game.
WOOOHOOOOOO!!!!! I'm sooooo frakking excited about this news. Really.... lol
For the record : I don't care what kind of subscription model it has. I will play this game. Been waiting far too long for a decent Mech game after playing Mechwarrior 1,2,3,4(+expansion packs) and MPBT3025 into the ground.
World of Tanks was interesting, and reminded me of how bad I want a new Mech game, but I couldn't stick with it because Tanks just don't rock my boat the way giant robots do. (and no, the new vision of transformers doesn't count. I'm not interested in giant robots fighting UFC style, wrestling and rolling around. Stupid. No thanks. )
Crash'n'Burn!!!
I wish people would stop expressing their "opinions"as though they are facts.I played plenty of f2p games and with significant amount of times with out spending a dime.I played LOTRO as well and spent money on sub and in the f2p part and spent way less in comparison to time spent playing in the f2p end than I did in the sub end.
On topic is this what they are doing with Mechwarrior 5 or is it different, are they doing 2 different titles?
Totally going to play this game.
Multiplayer Battletech: 3025 (beta) was canceled by EA since the suits decided their cash investment should be re-directed to their Majestic project (wise call).
Earth & Beyond was another game i played that EA canceled since the suits, again, decided to funnel their investment to their The Sims Online project.
So i for one, am happy that EA is nowhere near this game!
Nice! Of course, have to wait and see how it actually turns out, but I'll definitely be looking forward to trying this title. Loved the IP from way back!
Hell hath no fury like an MMORPG player scorned.
Oh, is this going to be like World of Tanks "mmorpg" - a "mmorpg" that has nothing to do with mmorpgs. Damn I hate when the term is used to con people like with WoT. CoD and Battlefield are mmorpgs too if the term applies to World of Tanks...
MechWarrior is a classic game and I look forward to hearing more about the mmo in the future.
not sure about WoT, but this MechWarrior Online project has not necessarily stated MMORPG status. Just says it's online, and that's pretty much it. Read the press release. I'm all good with it being a lobby-style game as long as they cop to it and don't try to sell it as some huge massive open world with mechs, if that's not what it's going to be.
While I am weary of the F2P model, love the IP and will keep an eye on this one!
... now where did I leave the keys to the Mad Cat???
A man is his own easiest dupe, for what he wishes to be true he generally believes to be true...
So, it'll be an over grown multiplayer add on to what was once the single player experience that instead of allowing players to host their own battles they'll be hosted on the companies servers creating a higher overhead than they need to create for the exact same game experience? and allow, but that would they'll be
It'll be like World of Tanks, but set in the MechWarrior Universe. Which could be an incredibly successful game. Or it could be horrible.
** edit **
Dig into the forums and such. That's where the rest of the information is.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
*sigh*
the exact same game experience of multiplayer progression? stable, 24hr accessible servers? Little to Zero ability for cheaters to join matches? regulated and consistent content updates? A persistent world(albeit, probably instanced and heavily lobbied)?
Based on the Clan/Guild warfare info its going to be more like 'Global Agenda' MMO rather than WoT. I completely agree with what your saying though. MMORPG is being slapped onto pretty much everything that tracks 'progession'/performance stats on the Internet.
However, I'm hoping they'll actually do some sandpark stuff eventually because quite simply the initial MMO will be underwhelming but understandable given the financial situation & backing of the project. At least its not vaporware.
Personally, playing a dispossessed mechwarrior or infantry in the Battletech universe or dropship combat/aerospace fighter or recon scout has been a Battletech game I've wanted to play for a long time. The Mechs are a central theme and where they Should concentrate on but Mechs are also a great adversary and environmental hazard (imagine being one of the lil people on the battlefield with these garguatuan behemoths running around - doing missions that they couldn't reasonably do because of there size and destructiveness [ie. exploring/capturing/disarming a Star League cache etc.])
Personally for Pure Mech games I think Armored Core series actually beats Battletech IMO. Battletech has always just been more Combined Arms/Greater outlook & Strategic in terms of environments/scope where Armored Core always overemphasises the impact/role of Armored Cores [especially the player]. Personally, the player saves the world/galacy/universe is Really tired and old with me.
