Open Beta in December BRILLIANT MARKETING!

SorrowSorrow Member Posts: 1,195

By going open beta on or around the SWTOR launch, The secret world team give they bored gamers out there an option to pull us away from buying SWTOR just out of boredom.

This is HUGE marketing magic, and very very smart for a game that plans to release shortly after SWTOR with the same distribution model.

Hopefully EA doesn't try and nix this move.

I think after the launch of Age of Conan a lot of people like myself are skeptical of even touching this game. It sounds great but Funcom lost a lot of reputation with the launch of AoC. Hopefully they learn from thier mistakes and don't release another bug filled game.

    Quoted from their website:

    • Open beta will not be initiated before Christmas, but will be a part of our strategy next year prior to our April 2012 launch.

    • Funcom has not yet made any official announcements regarding the business model or price points for The Secret World. This is still being discussed and evaluated internally, and we will make an official announcement when this has been finalized.

Go into a mini game for instance and get bugged in a group when it ends and you can't leave group. You need to log out for 5 minutes til you get auto kicked then log back into the game. Little things like that they don't fix makes me think that The Secret World is going to be another buggy cash n grab.

Actually AOC isn't nearly as bad now as it was at launch, they have learned a lot and fixed many of the issues with the game. That said AOC and TSW, have completely different development teams, in completely different locations.

I played at launch and for quite  a while after. Even today it is still filled with bugs...Not as many but still buggy. In the end they have the same upper management. I really don't have high hopes for it. Also there is no open beta for this game til sometime in 2012. Where did you get your info?

The information linked above from the main page of the TSW official website appears to refute the assertions made in the original post of this thread.

So, as far as I can tell, there is no specific time for the open beta, or exactly what the pricing model will look like (though P2P with cash shop in the most oft quoted conventional wisdom).

I can almost promise you that the ´open beta´ will keep slipping further and further back until it is about 2 weeks before launch and is limited to the first few hours of actual gameplay.....ah... I remember you well Tortege.   Funcom is absolutely not going to have any type of real open beta.

Care to make a wager, let's say, hundred dollars?

The fact that they did that with AoC doesn't mean that they'll do it like that with TSW, regardless whatever grudge you might have against AoC and Funcom.

I agree, I doubt they will risk it.    They may risk a quick few day load test, but any sort of proper open beta might kill the game.

AOC is a great game now... probally one of the best PVE games out there. The setting of the game and graphics have a lot to do with it but they have fixed all the major game braking bugs it has.. sure there are a few bugs here and there but thats the same thing with every game out there.

I am looking forward to TSW and its actually the only up coming MMORPG that is on my list of games to get..

I think they will have a longer open beta than AOC. With AOC i was in closed beta and you could get further than the starting area... cant remember what open beta was like.

    Well, this was...disappointing.

And to the guy knocking AoC; by all means, it's in your power to do so. What you say is true: there are bugs; the interface is frustrating and unwieldy; and there is nothing on the horizon for the broken PvP.

But the game is quite solid inspite of all that. I quit RIFT (which I played for 6 months since launch) to play it - granted I am currently still on my way to 80 (first character is 61, alt is 35) so I am probably in the honeymoon phase and my opinions of the game will change drastically at end-game but so far, it's been fun.

I dislike themeparks but FC has provided such a rich, detailed world that it is hard not to like it. It's a shame that FC progresses at the pace they do because AoC has great but unrealised potential.

Again, not refuting your views at all: I will definitely be wary of TSW.

"Never argue with a fool; onlookers may not be able to tell the difference."

I need to take this advice more.

Couldn't agree with your more, I think that is why people need to be very wary of with TSW.   Funcom pay a lot of lip service but for some reason don't act.

It won't be in december as they said, its in the beginning of 2012.

Oh yeah, Funcom open beta is just that. TORTAGE. Don't get your hopes up.

    AoC hatetrain a' comin'

Will The Secret World have foilage that can block in the 2nd dimension?

Just kidding. I am going to go with earnest hope and wishfully think that Tornquist and the scrappy coders can pull a win out of the jaws of the evil Funcom marketing weasels whom are working at the behest of the Evil Upper Management.

He also stated they have set their own target of 157 million in revenue in the first 12 months and that the game is going to be one of the best of 2012.  What was he smoking?

Funcom have now come out and stated they are yet to decide on a business model for TSW and this guy was high.  Well they didn't say they last bit, but they did state they haven't decided on a business model.  Sure seemed that way when the guy is talking specific numbers, 157 million in the first 12 months. My prediction, biggest fail of 2012 and goodbye Funcom.  (I will publish a statement in the next few days saying I have yet to decide on whether TSW will be a success or failure).

OB around a release for one of the if not the most anticipated MMo releases is dumb. When your game could be getting a ton of exposure, and possibly huge advertising by word of mouth, there won t be anyone around to give a shit. Wait till the newness has warn off on swtor, and the inevitable people that leave every MMO released, will give it a shot. Ie 3 months around.

Well all I can say to all you people out there hating on AoC I have been subbed to AoC now for 2 months and I now am not looking forwards to any new game anymore. I can't believe I always bought in to all the hate spewing from these forums on Age of Conan and never tried it until now. What the hell is wrong with most of you? Age of Conan for me is the best MMO I have ever played and I am not intending to go nowhere until they shut down the servers for this incredible game. Hopefully that won't be anytime soon as I have finally found my perfect game. AoC is mature, challenging and def not for whining carebears that seem to be multipling in droves to play these "baby" games of today.

And yes I will be interested in seeing how "The Secret World" pans out but will be hard pressed to leave AoC anytime soon.

    Time will tell I guess...

AOC is a great game, what is frustrating about the game is Funcom.  You may not see it at the moment having only played for a few months.  But over time when bugs don't get resolved, performance takes a dip with each patch release and the direction of the game goes opposite to what the fans want overall.  Frustration starts to creep in, not with the game,  with the lack of action in resolving the issues within the game.

Likewise when I was playing AOC I heard a lot of hate about WoW, when I tried it  I loved it. Same with Star Trek Online, you should always give a game a chance and play it prior to making a decision.  Which is one of the reasons, even after everything with Funcom, I am still going to try TSW.  But my perspective at looking at the game will be based on my knowledge of Funcom as a company.  To all intents and purposes they have yet to prove, as a company, they have changed. In fact recent debacles with beta signups, announcing prices then withdrawing them etc. All lead me to believe nothing much, if anything, has changed.

I think by "open" they mean lifting the beta tester NDA, not letting the entire world into beta 4 months before launch.

They lifted the press NDA this week, lots of new articles around

Regardless of what the status of their game is, they would do well not to even try to create hype in the face of the SWTOR launch. It would be like spitting in the rain, wasting a lot of potential hype creation by trying to compete with the juggernaut of the most anticipated MMORPG launch in recent history.

Like someone said before me, really push this game, say, mid January to February.

I honestly anticipate the April release to be pushed back at any rate.

They also have to be careful too of the GW2 release, as yet unannounced. People only have so much time and money to throw at these games, and SWTOR and GW2 are the games to beat, regardless of how you feel about them. Timing is everything for FC right now, and this strikes me as a bad decision, personally.

Uhh the release isnt due for AT least April 2012.... In what ways does this conflict with SWTOR? Even if they were by some miracle able to release in less than a month now, the audience isnt the same. Reviews have already said that this game can require you to think and it is NOT an easy MMO. You dont have those ez wow mode quests. You have to talk to NPCS and can only have so many quests at once. You arent gona be able to milk quests run 20 at a time, only 3 quests allowed at once!
