LEGO Universe: Lego Group Confirms Game Closure

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

The Lego Group has sent word that LEGO Universe will close down on January 31, 2012. Developers say that the free zone has met with positive player reactions but that not enough free players were converting to paying customers.

As a result of the game's closure, the LEGO Group also said, "As a consequence of the closure, the LEGO Universe staff has today been informed that the ‘Play Well Studios’ in Louisville, Colorado and the game’s marketing function in Billund, Denmark will be closed. This will affect 115 employees. All affected employees will be offered assistance in finding new jobs inside or outside the LEGO Group."

I am sad to say, I am not surprised. My son, being a full fledged Lego nut, couldn't find any enjoyment in this game. It would have to be a pretty bad game for even him to not at least want to spend 10 mins playing.

I felt it was a poor decision to not base the MMO on a similar concept as the console games. I admit even as an adult I have a lot of fun playing the all console games with my son.

Not a game I played beyond the free month at launch, but it had its fun moments.  Later Lego.  It had some interesting ideas, but I didn't feel pulled in or compelled to play.  Might have just been me though and not the game.  I'm in a different place these days.

You mean the Lego Blox community?  wah wah waaah... hehe

I did the beta and it  wasn't wasn't that bad.  I did love legos growing up, but the game lacked depth.

Unfortunate to see it go though, I am sure there are some people who enjoyed this game a lot and spent a lot of time collecting Legos to make their "Plot of land" really cool.

Well it at least lasted longer than the first attempt of APB.

The problem is that lego online wasn't sandbox enough... If it were, maybe it could have done something. But no, we KNOW that linear levels and quests is the only way to go...

Hello Minecraft - the REAL Lego Universe!

how much did the most succesful wowalike mmo Rift sell so far? Compared to the game made by ONE GUY?

Jeez, what a massive opportunity lost due to suit conformism. It makes me want to throw up.

You can't beat the real thing anyway, even if you made it as deep, it would lack the tactile satisfaction.

If they made Minecraft with Lego skin I'd play it till I die.

Mmm, Legocraft, you'd think that's what they would have done in the first place, Lego is the best toy of all time, but even I don't pamper my inner child that much. I'd need a more mature feel.

"Team up with friends in the fight against evil."

This quote from their web site tells me that the morons who made that game have absolutely no f***ing clue what lego is all about. It's just miserable.

I find freeform Minecraft much more mature than a game where you're playpretending to be a hero slaying some dragons or evil robots in order to save the world.. and I'm not alone considering the average age and education of Minecraft "players." But to each his own...

I guess I am just growing out of childish art styles, (being 33) but i still need my sandbox, WURM was great for a time, but Archeage looks great.

I also realize I am lying, as I've been playing Glitch all month.

At least this company is kind enough to try and find all the people who are going to lose their jobs other jobs within their company.

I was surprised that they did that.

Most companies could care less about their employees.

That's the huge thing I got out of this and it just shows me that not all companies are corporate a-holes, interested only in money.

I was really looking forward to having a go in this world. But they never released it in Australia. Everytime I tried to download the client - "not available in your region".

I only have mild sympathy... if they had released the damn game properly - maybe we wouldnt be reading this story!

Wow that absolutely sucks. I told my boy, he is very upset, beside himself really. :(

I have a 6 year old here who will be very sad to hear this. He loves this game, and I dont blame him. It was a mess at launch, but they really have worked wonders on it in its one year life.

At the moment I find it the most enjoyable MMO out there to be honest.

That said, it was a big missed opportunity. It certainly needed a dash of minecraft to honor its roots, hell, even just a dash of Terraria terraforming/crafting fun.

And they should have done what Activision have done with Skylanders: Combined real life toy purchase with in game items. Sure its a nasty path to take, but its where the big $ is...

Sadly, as the property stands there is no chance that anyone can buy thisw and give it a third lease on life. (Its allready on its second lease after the NetDevil pull out.)

I'm very surprised.  I thought it had enough of a following to make it, but I guess the actual development didn't reach expectations for a Lego game.

Maybe it's time a lot of these studios realized that just because they come up with an idea for an MMO doesn't mean it's a good one. This market is saturated with struggling entries, quite simply there just aren't enough players to go around, save yourself some money and just create something else.

Am I the only one who thinks lego would have been better suited to an RTS or something along those lines?

There's a "lego-esque" game out there called RoBlox (browser MMO) that my kids (ages 4, 7, 9, and 11) really enjoy.  My boys like to do the PvP games and my girl likes to build houses and restaurants out of the lego-like pieces.

The only MMO I've ever wanted pay a monthly subscription for and I never got the chance because it never launched in Australia even after it went FTP
