The latest "Path to Free to Play" blog post on the Star Trek Online site deals with a new feature introduced on the Tribble PTS: Dilithium.
Dilithium is now a new form of currency for players to collect. Dilithium can be earned through "ranking up" in level. Each level gained yields a cache of refined dilithium. In addition, there are several ways that players can earn dilithium ore which can be refined at a later point.
The blog post also goes into some detail about the sorts of things that dilithium can be spent on.

I sure hope they are getting rid of the other 15 forms of currency in the game before introducing a new one.
WTF? How about just working with Gold-Pressed Latinum? Dilithium is an engine component. How many carberators for that phaser, Mr. Spock? Got some spark plugs I can throw in to sweeten the deal...
Excellent Dracondis!
They are greatly reducing the number of weird currencies they have.
The whole dilithium currency is a farce, all it is is a method to railroad you into buying their C-points to get anything serious accomplished. It is time gated and attached to very limited content in a content scarce game. Sorry Cryptic, I have been a supporter for 18 months but the past content drought and the terrible development cycles make this a no go.
If you are looking for a sci-fi game, well hopefully TOR will fill your needs but don't hold your breath!
Seriously? Just how bad can they screw this up? I think the worst is yet to come.
Take the best IP and just totally miff it. What a bunch of morons,...
