As far as best and most successful Sandbox, I'd say that these terms are so vague and open to interpretation that Eve is the clear winner of this.
I think the people who like Eve would say that it is both (it's a love it or can't get into it at all type of game). Those who couldn't get into it (such as myself) might go with something else (UO or SWG for me). But there's no question that Eve was the most successful.
Ultima Online imo...You can tell that most of the people that worked on UO also worked on SWG...It's pretty amazing, go look at the credits of both original games...
SWG needed some balancing and content type stuff, but what Lucas forced them to do destroyed it, just think if they would of worked on balance and content, with all the resources spent to give the CU/NGE.
Some sandbox seems to be creeping back into the themeparks now, so I hope it continues.
I would vote for EvE, since it's both a game in the sense of offering an almost infinite variety of combat options, and a living breathing world controlled by the players actions through the ecenomy and all its ramifications and preconditions. And it's still around as one of the major AAA MMOs unlike the sandbox MMOs who dominated in the past, but who unlike EvE didn't evolve and increase their playerbase, but became legend and myth; a distant memory.

I really couldn't get into Eve, either, because I couldn't get into the combat and I didn't enjoy all the down-time traveling between systems. But when it comes to PvP, variety in equipment, economy, and assest destruction as death penalty and economic stimulus, it's the only game that has rule mechanics that I like.

I really thought about getting into Eve Online my father in law has been playing it for 5 -6 years now and he only plays that and GW. I like the idea behind but I wish you were more than just a ship avatar. I know in 5 years Eve supposedly will be using human avatars to go into planets and star systems and when that happens I will no doubt go in. I know about Dust 415 or whatever but its for PS3. I think the whole deal with the Sandbox cause and effects in the Eve really interests me. It's been a great ongoing game with millions of players and its the right audience and its been that way since 2003. It is also for PC and Mac (I have a Mac please don't judge me gamers I produce music on my Mac lol). But I've been trying to look around for something sand boxish. Sadly my favorite genre is post apcolyptic stuff and the cloest is Fallen Earth but its not a sandbox or its not really the right game for me. Everything that I know Eve has to offer interests me.
Do you guys have any suggestions on what you're playing now?
P.S. EQ1 in 1999 was not sandbox or anything but that was one of my favorite gaming experiences in my life.
Ultima Online. It's the most successful simply because without it, none of these other games would exist. It is the grandaddy of the genre, and it was the game the genre was coined for.
I would say Pre-CU/NGE SWG but I would have to concur with your choice. It setup the genre.

Its oFfcorse matter of taste and nobody will agree with other persons taste unless its same as you have.
For me its Asherons call-Darktide
But prolly most succefull by far is Runescape but its free two play.
Payed Two Play is prolly EVE.
P.S AC was btw in development already before UO was launched so maybe UO was one first(it was not first btw) but becouse AC was alot more complex with 3D world it just took alot longer to develop and bring it to the market untill '99.
Hope to build full AMD system RYZEN/VEGA/AM4!!!

Unfortunatley there are very little sandboxes on the market now. Some that have not been mentioned are:
Xyson Darkfall Mortal Online
Darkfall and Mortal have very little sand in the box though and Mortal is still extremely buggy. Darkfall 2.0 might add some more stuff to make it more sandboxy but at present it is just PvP full loot game with too much emphasis on character skill rather than player skill.
Xyson is not even close to being ready for lauch but was unfortunatly rushed out too early.
Ultima Online was the best sandbox if you ask me. But there is no way you could play it now. Somethings mature with time, computer games in 2D do not!
My hope is that Darkfall or Mortal Online get some major funding and sort themselves out.
My other hope is the PlanetSide 2 gets many more RPG elements to it to make it a proper sandbox war game.
Darkfall, contrary to what most people who post on here say about it, it is full of sand. And it is without a doubt the best full loot pvp mmo on the market. For this guy to include xsyon and darkfall together in teh post above me makes me chuckle, they are opposite ends of the spectrum.

Eve already has Avatars but you can't see other people yet.
I agree with a previous poster and I'm going to say original Everquest although I'm sure people will debate on whether it's actually a Sandbox title but to me, it seems to fit.
EVE. A lot of people won't like the fact that you 'play' as a spaceship most of the time, and combat is pretty basic (input wise), but no game (even UO) comes close to the economy and world influence it has.
In terms of pure numbers yes EvE is the most succesful but overall its gotta be Ultima Online. The game was the first commercial success after Muds turned into MMORPGs grandfathered by Meridian 59.
We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

Aw come on guys really? Did someone really say EQ and FFXI are sandboxes? EQ is the exact opposite of sandbox. Why don't people see that? Just because there aren't quest chains to max level doesn't mean it's a sandbox. There are cookie cutter classes and leveling.
Ultima Online was of course the best. /thread
As for now? I don't feel I have enough experience in EvE and Xyson to make comment/comparisons. Let's just say...there aren't many good ones out right now.

FFXI was hybrid of themepark and sandbox IMO. It didn't guide you from path to path (the only quests were telling backstories of the NPC's and such) and crafting played a huge role in getting gear. It lacked open PVP, but that isn't what makes a sandbox IMO.
It had the open explorable world (a level 1 character can travel to all of the cities), mounts you raised and bred, no pre-determined path, and crafting that actually wasn't inferior to quested gear.

probably uo
for me it was shadowbane. from starting with 1 house to the biggest nation on server, we then fought vs the rest of our server. they allied.
man it was a thrill. it was epic. til we got defeated. that was just awesome playerdriven pvp.
/miss
Also in 2 weeks darkfall is going to activate all old accounts for a weekend and increase skill gains for said weekend. Hope to see you there
Best: UO
Most successful: Runescape
Fallen Earth is good and fun.
Eve already has Avatars but you can't see other people yet.
This is not a game.
Ultima Online as the "best" by a long, long way.
EVE as the most successful (discounting RS).

I agree with a previous poster and I'm going to say original Everquest although I'm sure people will debate on whether it's actually a Sandbox title but to me, it seems to fit.
From everything I have read about sandboxes it would seem to define the game play in SWG.
Ultima Online for an eternal achievement.
EVE Online if you want to play one today.

UO .
Most successful is easily EVE. Best? That leaves for a very biased opinion.

I myself would say EVE being the best. It has its flaws but it still shines.
