Never played a Tribes game before and after hearing all the great things about it, I am looking forward to it. Plus it seems to play a lot like Halo, so thats definitely a plus in my book.
Hey guys just want to say Tribes Ascend is everything we've been waiting for, I played it last Thursday when then had a 3 hour server test.
As a long time Tribes 2 player I fell in love within 30 seconds, skiing, spinfusors, vehicals, maps it's all there and feel right, and looks fantasic too.
As it was just 3 hours I did not spend too much time looking at the interface, unlockables etc.... I'll try not to waffle on too much.
There are some noticable differences to Tribes 2, due to it being F2P.
Game Play
It's all there, the fast in your face, spinfustor and sking action, large maps with bases, generators, packs, vehical pads, inventory stations, deployables, turrents and sensors. Nothing more to say.... it's all good.
Currency
There appears to be three types of currency in the game
Credits - Earned whiled playing, used to perform call-ins and to spawn vehicals
Gold - Bought for real cash used to buy/unlock classes
Tokens - Earned while playing, used to unlocked classes
Classes
The three amor classes are still here, light, medium and heavy.
I didin't see any way to build a custom class, Instead I had 16 or so predetermined builds/classes such as solider, infiltrator, juggernaut, jumper and engineer, each of the builds do have a talent/tech tree you can spend points in that unlock perks and augmentations, such as faster energy regain, reduced ski friction.... all this is persistant.
You will not have access to all classes from the get go, you unlock these by spending tokens (earned in game) or gold (bought with $$$), each class ATM cost 1500 tokens by my estimate you'll earm 1500 tokens after about 15 hours of gameplay, I started the game with one class unlocked and 3000 tokens.
There were 2 game modes on offer, CTF and Rabbit.
Vehicals
You Spend credits to spawn vehicals
A 2 seater hoover bike
Good old shrike
2 Seater tank
Call-ins
You spend credits to use these abilities, there were four slots but I only ever earned enough to have access to two of em
Remote Inventory station (replace MCV?)
Air strike (replace bomber?)
?
?
In closing and P2Win
If you're a Tribes 2 player you'll love it, forget about the P2Win issue, buying classes does not make a good player, for me I would rather earn new classes by kicking ass. All classes are designed to forfil a role and not to be better than another, so there is no danger of people buying the GOD class.

so this is a free to download, pay to get classes game? Rather sub to a game and get everything myself. No game with a cashshop/mt is free to play, it is free to download.

It's free to download and play, but you have the choice to buy the classes or play the game and unlock the classes. So it comes down to the is my Time or Money more valuable. I can honestly say you'll have a blast without spending a penny.
Background: Tribes 1 Clan Flag-capper. Tribes 2 casual player.
Been playing the Beta and loving the fact that I am back in Tribes. Much of the same magic is there. The Spinfusor weapon plus trajectory movement is a perfect match. Skiing works but is not easy.
Team roles are well defined but hot swappable and classes have enough variety that multitasking is easy.
The only drawback I see right now is the Loadout purchase system. The two free loadouts are very generic and I quickly purchased one with my spacebucks because it could not fill the role I needed to take at the time They currently have no free-trial system set up for the loadouts, so you pay $7 blind ($5 if you preorder).
I am hoping they introduce a rotating Loadout system or somesuch.
TL;DR- great Tribes implementation but the pay system needs to be modified
I wasn't a big tribes player and I am also in the beta. I trust Hi-Rez, they are a good development team and know how to make shooters, and exciting gameplay. I'm not worried about the cash shop.. it never hindered me in Global Agenda, and if you played global agenda, you'd see its really unobtrusive. Sure spending money is easier, but it really doesn't make it any more fun.
Comments
I am. I bought the game!! I am ready to kick a$$ and take names!
