USA Today is reporting that a new MMO based on George R.R. Martin's "Game of Thrones" is in development. According to the online newspaper, the game is being developed by BigPoint and will be a free to play title.

By all reports, Martin is involved in several game titles in the works based on his book series. A Facebook title and a single player RPG are also in the works. Interest in "Game of Thrones" has exploded with the HBO series.

We'll keep you posted as more details emerge.

I love the tv series and the books, I hope they won't just make some mediocre title, to get a quick buck..

I think so long as the author is actually involved and can make decisions on how things work, then it should be pretty good, or at least true to the author's vision of the game. I would be much more worried about the mechanical details of the game being functional than anything else.

    ** edit **
BigPoint has many games running right now, so it seems like they at least have the mechanical details down. Leave the story to George R. R. Martin and it could be really good.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I don't know any mmo which was developed as f2p from the start which was worth my time yet. Just another IP destroyed.

Bigpoint.. lol The game is dead even before it started =P

    Interesting.

I'll keep an eye on this. If it's done well it could just be absolutely amazing.

But to be completely honest I'm not holding high hopes when looking at Big point. They don't seem to be the company able to give such a huge and amazing IP the attention it deserves.

Great IP for a mmorpg..... but lets not expect much about the game, hope they surprise me.

I was excited when I first heard "game of thrones mmo".  Then I realised it was the browser based type by Bigpoint!

    such a dissapointment.

While the setting is nice, why does everything needs to be turned into a mmo? What's next? Seinfeld the mmo: A game about nothing?

I love Game Of Thrones. I hope they don't ruin this IP like BSGO ... not another browser-based game.

Same here. So much potential which will certainly never be realized. image

Hasn't an RTS already been released?

  • KabaalKabaal Member UncommonPosts: 3,042

Sadly this seems to be the future. Every time i blink there's some company making a browser based MMO out of well loved IP's. Of all the sagas that deserve an intricate and graphical depiction this is the last one i'd want in the hands of the BP cowboys.

From what I've heard it was terrible, but yes, it's been released. Haven't tried it myself though...

The book series is amazing but I absolutely hate how the tv series has been handled. I've also noted the piss poor reception of the recently released RTS game.

To me, as a long time fan, I feel like this is nothing more than a ploy to garner as much money as possible without regard to the fan base who have helped make the series as popular as it is.

    QFT!

What a shame.  A great book series.  Love the show also.  But F2P is dishonest because it never is, so I have no interest.

I would not go as far as calling the series great but yeah it will be another good IP messed up because of greed.

I would play the single player RPG as long as it's along the same line as Gothic and other sandbox single player RPGs.

Agree. Books are amazing, the series is good but it's too chopped up, imo. They could easily have made 2 seasons out of Book 1 instead of what they did. But I understand that would be a huge multi-year commitment if they made 2 seaons for each each book. Maybe now that they have gotten such a great response they will slow it down a bit.

Anyway, I got excited when I saw the news headline about the MMO, but my excitement was quickly diminished when I read "Bigpoint" and "browser-based". Oh well.

It could have been much worse than BIGPOINT it could have been AERIA or GPOTATO

Game is dead before it even has a chance.

    Negative Aspects:

-Developed from the ground up as F2P

-BigPoint developing it, they are STRICTLY a BrowserBased "MMO" company that hasn't been doing well lately. Their games STRICLY use the following "technology":

                 -PHP

                -JAVA

                -Adobe Flash

                -Unity Engine

               Source

-Adaptations of a book into an MMO usually never go well, LOTRO can be called the exception, but even it never captured the book's original content.

wow dude you used up alot of space to say nothing at all ,

every D&D gaame started from a book , almost every fantasy MMORPG in the world had inspiration from books , D&D and Cyber Punk beings the most pulled upon .

BigPoint hasnt done anything badly , they have just yet to do anything great .

Compare their games then come back and say that.

It should have had one of the top MMO companies making it, anything less won't do it justice.

There has never been an MMO made of the game so that statement is irrelevant .

Drakensang Online is the epic new action RPG game that features extraordinary 3D graphics and effects and heralds the next generation of free-to-play online browser games.

Register now for Drakensang Online and play for free!

this is a very nice game they put out lately , the mmo aspect comes off with out a hitch , the RPG aspect is no worse than games like wow and rift
and its a low ram browser base game with not wonderful but not so bad graphics.

the majority here may not like it , but the majority here are also the majority no one likes ingame anyhow . the " im a ubber elitist minority "

People now days have less and less time to play games . company's like BigPoint are cashing in on this fact . putting out games we can play on smart phones and tablets while we sit on the train for or daily 40 min 1 way commute to work and back.

look at the spectacular numbers of users on crappy facebook games there are some with weekly log in accounts in the billions , these billions dont play because the facebook games are the best in the world , they play cuz there the best out there.

when picking a target audience for the Game of thrones MMORPG i dont think they were looking for a small group that likes almost nothing . i fairly sure they were looking at the big picture and the big pay off.
