no as of yet there is no character customization when you create a character so they all look the same, but that doesnt stop it from being a great game to play, think of the content and the style!!!
thats quite a shock i was actualy right for once lol, its all good, just counting the days now, i duno why i am cause we dont know the dates but im still counting!!!!
I know they are a number of months away from releasing the game. I was just curious. I don't know much about the game ..not yet anyway. But it does seem interesting so far.
The 'correct' reason is because they are testing the game, and they are all the same. To limit possible bugs and glitches that could be caused by character customization they have everyone using the "Auxillary xxx" Model, which is an NPC soldier you can hire.
It is also because graphics and the visuals are really the skin of the game. They want to build up the body, make sure it is functional b4 worrying about the looks too much.
I think I read somewhere on Roma-Victor's offical forums that they had something like 40 different faces completed but for testing purposes they are only using one face.
I do understand that they are only showing the bare minimum art for testing reasons. But it would be great to show at least one or two screenshots with all the assets and display features in use ...a side by side comparison showing both "with" and "without." The "testing" argument is ok, but it also sounds like the issue of showing better screens is being avoided. With only 2 months left? The screenshots look worse than Irth Online.
I'll play the game no matter what happens, but I kind of agree with bob. I do like a game with good customization, makes it easier to fall in love with your character.

The date on this website (9/30/2005) is not a DEV set release date, afaik. All they have said about a release date is that they were thinking "H2 2005." This could be Septemeber or it could be December, or it could be in two years because they don't have a publisher telling them to release a horrible game.

Good point justmebob, Red Bedlam realy should give us some better screenshots or in game movie.............

i personally think the screenshots on their website look fantastic (the more recent ones at least) and the movies look pretty good although i dont think theyve added in the tree-swaying yet

That may be what they are doing but that don't make it a correct reason. I would think ALL the aspects of the game would be tested for months to make sure they are working properly and there isn't a non apparent bug that doesn't show itself immediately.

I don't see why not. Would you rather have a glitch making it so every character has the same face or have a glitch that results in one person being able to kill everyone in 5 seconds (and thus rob you of all your money, items, NPCs, buildings, etc.)?

How about I would rather have no glitches from a thoroughly tested game? Too much to ask anymore?
Seriously I understand what your saying but the definition of beta to me is going farther and farther down the tube.

No glitches? What god are you praying to 'cause I'd like to meet him.
If you like, you can think of it as building a house. You start with the foundation (game engine), frame up the walls (gameplay), add sheetrock (graphics), then add a roof (uh...something else). If you do these steps out of order then you will end up with a pile of rubble, which is what most MMOs seem to do these days.
And if you really think about it, the way they are doing it is very methodical. By eliminating the possibility of graphics screwing something up they can further debug the game mechanics. Then when they are done with the game mechanics they can start testing the graphics.

And thats a very new way of handling a beta. It seems beta to most people now means we will start in open alpha and build it as we go so once we ae done we can release it faster instead of getting it 98% done and then beta test it to make sure its all well and works right and then release it a few months after we have a FINISHED version of the software.
Um, YA, thats how you build a game, thats NOT how you run a beta. A beta isn't the entire development process, it SHOULD be about the last 2%. But nowadays its all about getting it out earlier then it should be out because we have impatient fans waiting and we can get more sales if we press it.

This game definitely looks like alpha. Despite your protests and explanations, the game looks very amateurish. I know that is harsh but perhaps you people are not ready to show it to the world just yet.

As has been said before, judging a game before release is tantamount to boo-ing at the special olympics. Read the FAQ about the game, if you don't like how the game is represented there then it doesn't really matter how the game looks. Same thing if you DO like how the game is represented in the FAQ. Read a bit more about how the game is being produced, it isn't in the traditional alpha, beta 0, closed beta open beta to release paradigm.

So the message you are sending is ...if you cannot say anything nice do not say anything at all? I do not think my post was very inflammatory but comparing my observation to "boo-ing at the special olympics" is assenine. Traditional or non traditional alpha, beta is irrelevant. Perhaps I should have said the game does not look professional to me. Or is that too offensive for you?
While I have your attention, perhaps you should make a list of what games you feel so attached to ...and I will be careful not to post on a related thread.
I think if you had left out the special olympics reference I would have respected your opinions ...maybe even stopped to consider what you had to say.
I have only been in open betas, and very late ones. But to my understanding if they have a beta they need something to be tested. RB is a small company, they need people to test. So maybe they are opening the beta early (and calling it beta rather than alpha). But I am not in beta, and I am guessing those bashing it aren't in beta either. So no telling what is going on. What I know from my beta experience is that open beta is the time for when the developers really want a lot of people to test out features and make sure they work properly, and also to stress the servers. So from this conclusion I think that closed beta is the time to implement the new systems, equipment, quests, and whatever else to tweak and improve till the developers get it spot on. That is how I see it done. But it doesn't matter. No one has to follow the rules to making a MMORPG. As long as it gets done, and done well, then they can do it which ever way they want.

Dont mean to flame you Kellster, but i think youre being a bit harsh in your post. I mean he was only making a small joke, which was neither funny nor harsh in my eyes. Maybe you just have a small tolerance for abuse, in which case youll probably come back with something really harsh to what im saying in this post. But there you go, i just think you dont need to be so harsh, just chill a bit and smile!!! Want a hug Kellster??

Yup. They already have a lot of the graphics things done. They just need to turn 'em on, add a few, and make sure there are no glitches.
