"People “addicted” to video games are greedy assholes who put themselves first and don’t care about anything but making themselves happy. There is nothing scary or sad or dramatic about it."
"They’re basically just dicks." ""
This is funny because it's true.
""But Coyote, you could learn! You only prefer keyboard and mouse because that's all you've ever known!" You might say right before you hug a rainforest and walk in sandals to your drum circle where you're trying to raise group consciousness of ladybugs or whatever it is you dirty goddamn hippies do when you're not busy smoking pot and smelling bad." Coyote's Howling: Death of the Computer
I honestly think this article is nothing more than an attempt to justify the nearly pornographic portrayal of women we regularly have to see from ads on this site.
Haha thanks for the good read. I love how people here are debating your rant thread....gamers can be so serious
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
I didn't think the article said all that much. Most of those myth's just simply aren't anymore.
Organizations will use ANY platform to promote their viewpoint so the point's aren't really 'myths'. Organization A says 'Games cause violent tendencies'. It gets in the media as the soapbox article for 'today'. Half a dozen, or half a hundred or however many parents new to the concept perk up and a few more are added as followers of 'The Cause'. Most media rants these days are short lived (in the mainstream) and stay alive by periodic remarks to the news media. Sometimes those comments are painfully stupid but people remember the 'core' concept.
Last year there was a special election in Massachusetts to fill the seat left by Ted Kennedy. The folks running for the seat had services which made pre-recorded messages or robocalls to phone numbers. They were making 10 to 12 calls a day in some case (I had 16 one day between the home and cell phone). People remember the name even if they were pissed at the delivery medium. It's all about media spin.
Not that many or even most of the core concepts are bad. People SHOULD be aware of violence. They SHOULD be more conscious of obesity. The SHOULD be aware of objectification of women (or men). One article that makes 1 person aware of a serious something (even if common sense dictates that they shouldn't need prompting) has done a least a little good.
"Because women see the video game model of “perfection” with soft curves, large full breasts and perfect skin and hate her. That image makes them get in touch with their emotions and fills them full of insecurities and self doubt and sends them into a spiral of depression that ends in the bottom of a tub of Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey."
For those who think this..
HaHa.. I am a woman and this does not apply to me! I have played MMO's and all sorts of games in the last several years, so rethink this please for us women!
yes, videogame lead to obesity cause after being 8 hours at work you go home and use all your spare time playing in a computer.
Go outside and do some exercise you fatty!!
No thanks, still waiting on the Skinner Rat Doctors to skinny me up with a Kinect MMO that won't let me sit down until I get that shiny new sword. They're taking their sweet time about it, though, because gamers are divided into two camps: The 'I don't want to run around in my living room to play a game because I'm lazy' crowd, and the 'go outside and play' crowd.
I don't want to sit on my ass while I play MMOs anymore and I don't want to go outside, either. Outside is boring and you get in trouble when you kill people.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
One of the funniest posts I've ever read. Though I could care less about the subject matter. Let people think what they will the gaming industry is to the point now that they can't really change much. We're like cigarettes without the lung cancer.
Why should EA apologise to Steam when it was Steam trying to force EA's hand as the sole digital distibutor for game DLC that shot them in the foot anyway ?
EA tried to protect consumers and give them freedom of choice on where to buy the game and future DLC and due to people within the industry who havent done their homework EA comes out as the bad man.
Otherwise great read
so that means EA will also sell they games on steam too?
I think the author is missintepreting addiction for physical dependance. Yes you can become physically dependant on alcohol, drugs, ciggarettes they are also addictive. Video game addiction falls under what psychologists call behavioral addiction or impulse control disorder. People can become addicted to gambling, working out, watching tv, shopping, all types of addictions exist in our world that are not caused by physical dependance. The research is still out on what dopamine receptors are associated with different addictions but it is widely accepted by the psychological community that they are still very real and potentially unhealthy addictions
So don't pretend it doesn't exist because you're mixing up physical dependance and addiction just to make yourself feel better.
Behavioral addiction is more about the compulsion to repeat certain behaviors over and over again to the point that it becomes damaging to your quality of life. If your skipping meals, are extremely anti-social, skip work, can't sleep, are overly anxious or angry when not playing games these and many others can be signs of addiction.
Do I think it's as serious as a cocaine, alcohol, or meth addiction? No, not at all but to say it's all pretend and doesn't exist is a lie and for you to perpetuate the lie is irresponsible, especially when there have been cases (thankfully few) of child neglect, death, and depression associated with MMORPGs.

A generalization does not need to apply to every subject within a population to be true.

my suggestion would be to look up the definition of the word 'Sarcasm' and then re-read the piece applying your new knowledge
Excellent as always Mr.Coyote.

Eh? This is accurate, fact checked, increadible research driven journalism at its' finest. I sir do not know what you're referring to when you say sarcasm.
well in addiction to humor I also hate cats and their infestation of the internet.
You are an evil, evil person.
But on the issues some people have with compulsions, don't blame writers for snickering when it's improperly lumped in with physical addictions. Blame psychiatrists for blurry classification, then blame their less-educated pop-psychologist siblings for spreading that garbage around.
I have what pop psychologists call an addictive personality, by that they simply mean that when I get into something, whatever it is, I really get into it, and I snarl like a rabid dog when something pulls me away from it.
I also refuse to deal with reality any more than necessary because reality is infested with the species stupidus humanus, otherwise known as people. Neither an obsessive temperment nor misanthropy has anything to do with a chemical addiction, and I doubt they have much to do with dopamine, either. Except in the sense that I will do whatever I can to find something to relax me and keep me from wrapping my fingers around the throat of people who annoy me, which probably does create a warm dopamine glow triggered by the thought, "I might not have left this chair today, but at least I didn't kill anybody."

I'm not usually one to point fingers, but if I was I would say that the news media is a bigger problem than 95% of what they report to be a problem.
