Arctic Combat: Arctic Combat: First Look Interview

As part of our continuing coverage of Webzen titles being showcased at GStar 2011, MMORPG.com's Richard Aihoshi had the opportunity to find out more about Arctic Combat, a free online first person shooter. Richard sat down with AC's producer, Jungseok Park, and product manager, Sam Oh. Find out more about Arctic Combat in this informative interview.

What do you regard as the main opportunities for and barriers to success here in North America? What kinds of gamers comprise your core target market here? In addition to language, in what ways and to what extent does the version our readers will play differ from the domestic Korean one?

Currently in North America's online FPS market, the trend was basically counter-strike style games. We are not saying counter-strike style is bad, there were times CS was dominating on & offline markets. However while the PC & console market was evolving around this FPS genre, online FPS market was still quite the same. That’s where Arctic Combat comes in. We do not wish to change the market completely. We only wish to provide our users something different than what the market already has to offer and show them there are actually other choices to enjoy Online FPS.

Artic Combat is definitely an easier name to swallow than the original name showing on the wallpapers at the site...

    Battle Territory Battery Artic Wind

Though, given the site references it as Battery Online, would that mean the original name was...

Battle Territory Battery Online Artic Wind?

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

"We offer a Trophy system in Online FPS, you get to have a chance to roll for unique to common items after each game ends, odds to receive these prize is totally random, your performance on the battlefield does little effect on your draw. As for these unique items you can trade with others through our Auction House, which is also the very first on an Online FPS like this."

    Just like Global Agenda.  Whoops.

I wish them the best of luck releasing 1-3 months after Planetside 2 and Firefall and attempting to create anything resmbling a competing product.

Akthough I''m not  an expert in FPSs this game seems to be quite simple and easy to play. The current stage which is Beta Testing has a lot of features for the testers to use. The fact that at this point - Beta Test - one character may be used  for Assalt  or Snipper, instead off a different character for each, offers simplicity and ease of access. One very unique feature is that after the death of a soldier, when re-spawn, comes for several seconds the option to change gear/equipment through a panel that was set prior to the battle by the user. The user is able to set 4 different set ups, 4 different configurations if you like, for which there is the option to use after re-spawn. There is enough time given for that and this fature maximizes the gaming experience of the user.

It is quite simple to create/join  a battle and select the desired mode. The maps are quite clear and the graphics very good although maps bigger in size would be better for the troops to deploy, specially snippers.

Hopefully the bot  users will keep out of this game, or the devs will find a way to keep them out.
