What RTS to see if I like them?

xenogiasxenogias Member Posts: 1,926

Ok so I have only ever played Starcraft when it first came out and Age of Empires when I was to young to know wtf I was doing. By that I mean I was a teenager but more into um......other things than games that make you think. Now that I'm between MMO's and caught up on all the other games I intended to catch up one I am thinking of looking back into the RTS realm of games.

So what I am looking for is single player for now since as I said, I'm not sure if I will like em or how good I will be at them. They must come from Steam or the Blizzard store. Prefferably under $20 since I dont really wanna drop $60 on something like SC2 untill I'm sure I will like them and even then I will probably play all the cheaper ones before getting into the newer ones.

From the blizzard store I have the option of WC3 (without expansion) for $19.99 or SC1 for $14.99. There are to many on steam to list.

TLDR: New to RTS's. What is your favorite and what would you reccomend from steam or blizzard store (digital copy only). Prefferably under $20 since I'm a nub to this type of game though if its "OMFG THIS IS THE GREATEST GAME EVER" I might be willing to buy a newer one.

Thanks and yes feel free to call me a noobish moron for not playing RTS's before now. I wont report you as I probably deserve it :)

WC3 single player isnt as RTSy as I would like.  So, I wouldn't really suggest that if your trying to get a feel for the RTS genre.  But I have not played many others so I can't suggest what the best would be.  I just know that WC3 shouldn't be your first choice.  Maybe your second though.

I do know that WC2 is more RTS than WC3. I loved WC2, had a better feel to it.

i'm terrible at it but still having fun. (perhaps i shouldnt have picked zerg).

In his OP he said he didnt want to drop the money for it before he knows if he will like RTS or not.

  • I'd recommend Supreme Commander. The original is on Steam for like $15 these days. It's RTS on a massive scale and very fun. I think the demo is still available from fileplanet.com if you want to try it out.

Company of Heroes is really good IMO. The total War series has always been my goto in the world of RTS though.

Yeah Company of Heroes is pretty good.  Warhammer Dawn of War, made by the same people, is pretty good too.  They play very similarly, but one is WW2 and one is Warhammer universe.  Any of the Total War games are great, I specifically like Empire/Napoleon because that is my favorite time period.  Rome/Medieval are still fun but definintely show their age graphics-wise.  I play many Paradox games, most are pretty good but there are some duds.  Generally though they are little more hardcore RTS, not really newbie friendly.

AI War is on sale today only (11/8/11) from steam, fun game:  AI War

You can always check this list too, great games here:  Steam list

Thanks guys keep em commin. I'm actually making a list incase I do enjoy them lol. Sounds to me like if you like RTS's there are plenty of them out there that are good and fairly cheap.  Thats one reason I'm looking at RTS's. Untill I find an MMO I want to play I need a game that I can sink many many hours into for a reasonable price. Buddy told me RTS's are where its at for that.

Starcraft 2 was fairly easy for me to get into as my first RTS game, would highly recommed going for that. Company of Heroes is also quite a lot of fun, but I found it to be fairly challenging and that might not be something you want.

Could also try Age of empires online just to get a taste of these games, I only played a little bit of it but they ease you into the game quite nicely, which may also seem boring if you want to play at a faster pace.

No no no no no no no.

If you want an RTS to see if you like them get Command and conquer red alert 3.

The player campaign is great, the art work and graphics are great and it will show you what RTS's are like.

Crap like Supreme commander are pretty complex if you're only looking to try it, but Red alert is simple. Build some power stations, build a refinery, build tanks. The C&C series is what I played waaaay back in the day and it sparked my love for the RTS genre, so give it a try, you won't regret it!

Company of Heroes or Warhammer 40,0000:  Dawn of War 1.

I'll leave it at that.  Newer RTS from the last 2-3 years have been an overwhelming "meh" IMO.  You have to go to the older stuff.

We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." I found my old copy of SC1 from waaay back when the battle chest first came out. Installed it and updated it. Found out it doesnt like my system or vista  lol. It keeps crashing as soon as I get the Victory message.

Think I may pick up company of heroes since its cheap on steam and one of the few offered on steam that keeps comming up the most. Thanks guys.

Company of Heroes?  You will not regret it.  The last of the good RTS games that tried something new.  Be sure to check some of the mods, and I suggest the Blitzkrieg Mod.

    Empire Earth 1.  It's great.

    Wut?

Isn't Company of Heros a Real Time Tactical game, not Real Time Strategy?  Strategy has resource collection.

I've never played Company of Heroes (RTT) but I have played World in Conflict (RTT) and WIC is awesome.

Dont waste your money on Starcraft 1.  The game is way to old and there are far better and newer options out there for the same price.  If you spare it, I really recommend StarCraft 2.  This is the pinaccle of RTS gaming.  And dont even get me started on their custom maps.  There are same where you are actually playing a first person shooter.  Its insane.  This game is also new and the community is huge.  Its the leader in Esports right now, so thats my recommendation.

Starcraft 2 is pretty good as an intro to the rts genre.

I personally prefer the Total War series, although it's debatable to call them an rts.

Genres->Strategy->Games...set the Metascore and the Price.

Under $20 and Meta > 80 returns 53 items.  Of course, some of those are DLC, etc.

The top two rated games there are Civ IV for $20 and Company of Heroes for $10.

There are five more games with a rating of >90.  Rome TW - $10, Empire TW - $20, Braid - $10, Civ III Complete - $5, Freedom Force - $5.

I still find it funny that FF is rated so high.  I was so disappointed with that game.  Literally, I was playing along - having a blast - and it was done.  It was over and done so fast...meh.

I agree with folks about the Dawn of War though - really enjoyed that one.  Hated DoW2 - so disappointed with DoW2 - even with DoW2:CR.  The new DoW2:Retribution - bah, all that DLC stuff - hrmmm, nah.

I really wish we could get a new game like Homeworld.

I used to play Gratuitous Space Battles while mining in EVE...twisted.

I miss the MMORPG genre. Will a developer ever make one again?

Dungeon Defenders. It's on Steam and has gone insane since release. It was $15 when I got it during a promo so I'm not sure what it costs now. It's a bit of a different RTS with where/what units you use to build with and a MMO style combat to help kill mobs. Great fun and very addictive. Highly recommended!

It's only been out since Oct 19th.  There is a free Halloween DLC that expires on the 11th.  There is a demo.  I just couldn't get past the graphics.

I know you do not want to drop any money but let me tell you a story.

I am strictly an RPG gal. Okay old gal but anyway I have only played MMORPG and single player RPG games and a couple of adventure games like Grim Fandango and Syberia. Then last year there was this hoopla about Starcraft 2 and yes gullible me was hooked by the ad. I kept thinking I would give it a try and I caved in and bought it. So when it came I bugged my son to show me some tips and spent endless hours looking at youtube videos and guess what I absolutely fell in love. So much so I have since played Dawn of War and tried out Battel for Middle Earth and also some turn based stuff like King's Bounty.

So my point is Starcraft 2 was the game that hooked me into this genre.

Have you tried DotA on Warcraft 3 ? (best if you play it with expansion)

Or give League of Legends a try till DotA 2 comes out.

Dawn of Fantasy is a roleplaying strategy game. Not really RTS though, because it plays like a Zynga game but with great graphics and not on facebook.

If you don't like waiting hours for your buildings and upgrades, this is not a game for you. Oh, and it is a MMORTS.

Starcraft 2 multiplayer sucks, there is no fun playing 1v1  at higher level(after  experiencing 2000 games in master/diamondleague), most players just play to become better at it, but don't actually enjoy it. What is fun though is watching and following the game, you should check out Idra and follow his tournaments, it is fun to watch if you are for a specific player. Also check out day9: http://blip.tv/day9tv, he was an american pro gamer at starcraft 1 and now a caster in starcraft 2. He has his own show now, where he analyses the games, do fun stuff. You should check that out if u want to know more about sc2.

Single player is warcraft 3 the best game, just first the campaign of reign of fire than the campaign of frozen throne.

BTW you should check garena and gameranger, there are people still playing old games online(mostly rts games)!
