One of the videos (i think it may have been the IA class video) showed the imperial agent on top of a building using a scoped rifle to pick off targets at a distance (screen chaged to scope view with crosshairs).
Can anyone confirm that this was actual gameplay mechanic? It's in the official video, so obviously there is no NDA violation. I am not asking for any additional details on it. Just confirmation that this indeed is how some of the ranged combat works rather than a promotional animation.

There's no manual aiming in SWToR.
What you saw was likely the animation of one of the IA's skills. Whilst charging it shows a crosshair over the target's head.

oh, i don't care about manual aiming, i just care that you can shoot at really long range (far enough that you may want to use scope to pick your targets)

when i played my IA up to 14, the snipe kill was just a spell/skill. there wasnt anything special about it except the amount of dmg it did. ambush was an upgraded version of it, if i remember correctly. my assassin had an ambush as well. so i might be confused on the better sniper name.
Edit: oops forgot, no the range isnt all that far. 30 or 40 meters.
Ah right.
From what I read snipers and gunslingers have 35 yard range on their abilities as opposed to 30 yard range for most ranged abilities.
So you've got a slight advantage (17%) but nothing major. What supposedly mainly allows you to snipe are your superior cover abilities. According to the previews I've read the sniper and gunslinger get a lot of abilities that prevent enemies from closing the distance in the first place (without kiting) by making it impossible to leap to targets in cover as well as being able to set up defenses that repel melee enemies and such.
Meaning that if an enemy starts the battle at max range and in line of sight you've got a huge advantage since you'll be the hardest class to close that distance on. But once they're in range you've supposedy got fewer tools to react to that (for the sniper/gunslinger that is. I expect operatives and scoundrels to perform significantly better in close quarters).
