I dunno, when I played the game it felt exactly like wow. The combat is identical, same boring quest hub stuff, just with 5 mins of voice acting that wastes your time just to be told to kill kill x amounts of creatures. If your expecting this game to NOT be a wow clone your severly mistaken, its just another in a long line of games that copy and paste things out of wow and tries to be it. But ultimately they all fail, there is just something wow has that the clones do not have. Though rift is doing fairly well. Only people who say this game is not a wow clone are the fanboys mostly, anyone else see's it for what it really is. Bioware has bascally said it was a traditional mmo, and now a days traditional mmo=world of warcraft clone that usually has a good chunk of its mechanics copied directly from wow, in SWToR: Combat is pretty much a direct copy and paste from wow, other than the cover system only a very small amount of the classes can use. The classes are also bascally copied exactly from wow, you have your wizard, your warrior, your rogue. Why do I seem to be the only bioware fan that can see swtor for what it is?
Just get over it and stop trying to fight and say the game is not a WoW clone, its as much of a wow clone as rift, runes of magic and stuff. Which is pretty much wow with a new skin. Just because its a wow clone doesn't mean it cannot be a decent game, it just means people don't expect anything great out of it in general.
Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:
A. Proven right (if something bad happens)
or
B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)
For example, Dragon Age played exactly like any other traditional RPG, mainly just giving an original world and story, yet it got good grades and no one whined about the gameplay, why? I dont know but I do know it is a 100% traditional RPG clone and it was a damn good game. Every genre is filled with these stories as long as the games are well made and good quality.
Whining about it not being something else is just as stupid as whining about Battlefield 3 because it's not a turn based strategy game, it's not supposed to be one and it's retarded to whine about it, just go find a turn based strategy game and stop asking something else to be it.
To be fair, classical RPGs (if you mean Baldurs Gate, Fallout, Arcanum, Planescape Torment etc as "classical") already came with a good story, so the break from the norm was nonexistent, additionally DAO was the first classical AAA RPG since, i guess, KOTOR/2/Jade Empire (by the same company no less)
The difference is cRPGs are a genre, and MMORPGs are not.
Just like cyberpunk is a sub-genre of Science Fiction, and Sci-Fi is a subset of Fiction.
MMORPGs have no set gameplay mechanics, they can be FPS, cRPG, aRPG, jRPG, Platformers, etc.
If you say that SW:TOR is an MMORPG people can imagine all kinds of gameplay experiences, from point and click combat to FPS combat, from action to puzzle-solving.
I get what you're saying. I ment that DAO didnt have anything new in it really, just the setting and the story, like most of the games ever being released. And no one whined, it did not invent any grand new mechanics.
TOR was said to become what it is now from very early on, so people have known for years that while being a MMORPG, TOR will end up with the traditional style RPG gameplay, very much similar with DAO in fact, just a bit more fluid movement and control + no pause obviously. Two games that uses ages old but proven gameplay mechanics, one gets praised and the other gets poured crap on it.
Maybe I am just reading too much into hate and trolls (arent they usually the loudest?) of MMORPG.com forums since a lot of gaming sites and testers gives good impressions.

id respond to this but whats to point. id just be playing into the hands of a huge troll. Thats all u are. This game didnt play like wow. It had similar mechanics yes but it didnt play lke wow at all. I play wow almost 7 yrs now and i played tor beta.
There are similarites in game play and combat but it doesnt play exactly like wow and the worst thing u said was the vo put down. The vo made this game amazing the story and vo is top notch worth listening to and the h oices are fun and gave me alot of enjoyment.
This game isnt a wow clone if anything is an rpg clone in combat and mechanics with bioware story and chocie on top of it. since single player rpgs and most mmorpgs use similar mechanics and combat its not a wow clone. God i get tired of people like u who dont even bother to get there facts straight before flaming.
One of the issues I saw people have in the beta (which has shown up in this forum) is that people are trying to play this game like WoW. Stuff like skipping lore, grinding on mobs, and in general not paying any attention.
But I have a clue for you: if you play SWTOR with the same style you play WoW, you will miss the point entirely, and miss a lot of the fun.
This is a Bioware game, at it plays very much like all the bioware games before it. The game *is* the lore, so settle in and enjoy it.
There are many aspects of the game that appear similar to WoW, like leveling and aquiring better gear. However, unlike WoW, these are side-effects, not goals! There is absolutely no reason to grind mobs or to "power level". Following the story keeps you exactly where you ought to be; trying to outlevel it is pointless. Battleground PvP is scaled, so being higher level doesn't buy you anything.
Not only does it not sound like a WoW clone, it doesnt sound anything like an...MMO. But, give Boiware credit, they figured out a way to make a good old fashined RPG, slap a Massively label to it and charge $15 a month to those who think its worth playing a single player game as a sub based MMO.
There are plenty of group quest, It's your decision to want to participant in them not the developers or other players.
actually, i wouldn't give Bioware credit for anything here. they aren't Bioware anymore, they are EA Games.

If someone wants to grind kill to level 50 I am sure that would work just fine other than some of the 'must do story line (getting off starter planets, ships etc.)
*shrug* Let people play as they see fit. It's a traditional MMO with (what appears to be) a great storyline. I like it. If my buddy wants to grind kill from drops, mats, easy leveling while working..so what?
So it is a WoW-clone, but you can ignore that fact by listening to the story?
That's nice.
I'm still not sold I'll be paying 15 bucks a month to be talked at. When what I want is a massive persistant world game.
I mean most paperbacks are just 6.99 now. Plus I'm sure most of the will have less liner plots.
Really? So you must be reading those sandbox novels I hear so much about.
Hell those are only 49 cents.
With them having colors, does that mean they're no longer a sandbox?
In order to be a real sandbox, do they need to have a plain cover you can design yourself?
As for the discussion itself, the thing the OP does that stands out the most to me is not prove that SWTOR is not a "WoW-Clone" . . . but prove that people will continue to tell other folks that they need to play a game a certain way, and that if they do not play it that way . . . then they are playing it wrong.
If people want to play it like a "WoW-Clone" - that is their choice, their decision. It is not your place to tell them that they are doing it wrong...
actually, i'd just like to know where the poster is finding those for 49cents!

This game is infact a WoW clone. Trying to say its not is like trying to say LOTRO is not a wow clone. Having a great story doesnt make it "not a wow clone" like you want to claim. What it makes the game is a WoW clone with a great story.
Now lets look at other flaws of your post that you are trying to pass as fact when they are actually opinions that have nothing to do with with your argument that TOR is not a WoW clone. You get gear and level. You may THINK they are side effects but they may verry well be goals of players. Its not for YOU to decide how they play the game.
There is no reason to grind or "Power level"? Again its a playstyle choice and again, who are YOU to tell someone how they should play the game? Trying to outlevel it being pointless is again, another pointless opinion. Maybe someone wants to outlevel the story to make it easier. Ever think of that? No of course you didnt because your opinion is the only one that matters.
Battlegrounds are scaled so there isnt any reason to be higher level? This isnt an opinion its just a completely false statement. Being higher level if nothing else gives you access to more skills/talents. So yea, that comment is just plain false.
TLDR: OP tries to say TOR isnt a wow clone. The only comment that he makes in regards to that is the story. Everything else is an opinion that tries to tell everyone how they should play the game because its the only RIGHT way to play the game. As to his argument the only thing he manages to do is show that TOR is infact a WoW clone just with a great story.
I have not given a damn about Warcraft lore since WC3. I'm much more excited for ToR's story. I loved Mass Effect 1-2, and Dragon Age 1-2. They were incredible, and they really pulled me in. I tried some WoW recently after quitting for a year. I must say it has evolved nicely, but I do find the whole lack of voiced dialogue and interaction quite boring. I think I'm spoiled after playing Bioware's epic games.
WoW has little to immerse the player with. Grind, kill X. Turn in quest, kill X. Turn in quest, kill X. You get a crappy reward and a small amount of xp. Rinse and repeat. I don't really feel like I have accomplished anything when I'm questing in WoW. I do like 10 quests and get a small amount of xp, and then I'm sent on 10 more. I feel like less quests that give more xp would be better.
Hopefully ToR will have incredible stories that immerse us in the world, and make us feel like we are the character we are playing. I shouldn't have to provide my own music, like I do with WoW. Not worried there however, I heard ToR has great music.
Finally, I agree with the comment

Try making a tauren if it's a WoW clone.
As soon as anyone falls back on the term WoW clone all intellegent conversation becomes impossible. It's the MMO version of Godwin's Law.
If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it is probably a duck.
Looks like a duck: Same type of cartoony gfx.
Swims like a duck: Linear, themepark, class based, instanced with controlled PvP and next to zero death penalty and the combat is pretty similar (1,2,3 etc)
Quacks like a duck: If we assume this is the hype for the game then it is quite similar in this regard as well. The only major difference is that WoW is not heavily story-based where as SW:TOR is.
So this game is in effect a WoW clone, in SW skin and with some Bioware single player storylines.

Same song and dance over and over and over again.... i really doubt if any of you played any MMO before WOW. Considering your knowledge and point of view is so limited.

I played MMOs since UO beta and have since played AO, AC, EQ, Eve and WoW. So my perspective is quite wide, that is how I know this game plays so much the same as WoW because it is nothing like those others.

Try breeding mallards with pintails. They're both ducks but very different birds. According to your theory a maserati is a ford model A clone. It's sloppy thinking that has no value.
Well the word clone is a bit of a misnomer but the two games play very similary so, if you played WoW and other themeparks, I would not expect much difference from this game. Beside the SW skin that is and single player storyline (if you are into those things).
Even so I would recommend Skyrim for single player storyline, it has a much more immersive world.
I played MMOs since UO beta and have since played AO, AC, EQ, Eve and WoW. So my perspective is quite wide, that is how I know this game plays so much the same as WoW because it is nothing like those others.
For someone who claims to have a very wide prespective you surely do not know that all these features existed even before WOW. What you did was, define the traditional features of MMOS with exception of instanced battlegrounds.
Ok first off most haters on here arent wow fans either. They hate wow and tor and themeparks and put those types of games down by callign them wow clones over and over.
Im sorry ive read many previews and i played tor beta and ive played wow for 7 yrs this is not a wow clone and most people who prieviewed it agreed with me
Im not gonna say it doesnt have similar mechanics or similar game play features it does. But this is not a wow game in a star wars skin. The graphics while done styleized are actually top notch and better then wows.
The story and choices are unique to mmos. the combat feels more heroic somehow even if it does play similar to wow. in that u have cds and abilities that work off resources.
That said all mmos ie played work this way and ive treid alot fo them. so no its not a wow clone and the trolls who say so are just beign trolls cause they is anonymity on the wb and they can get by with it.

Neither of those games very as linear, casual and instanced as WoW. So in effect they played very differently than WoW.
Its seems this game will appeal to those that prefer the journey to the destination.
I'm not a big sci-fi fan so I plan to skip this title, but it should bring good times for those with the right mindset.
Have fun.
Probably you're right, I think it will more likely draw people who are SW-fans (Not sci-fi fans, because SW isn't real sci-fi. It's sword and magic in space.).
And initially those who are drawn into every launch.
Latter leave once the novelty has weared off and die hard fans will stick until they close servers.
But as OP said: Don't play it like other MMO's, because if you do you will kill your spacebar (you know what I'm talking about and if you don't you will find out soon enough after launch). And you will also find that there isn't much of a game under hundreds of hours of videos and voiceovers.

We are taking about features here. Not to what extent those features were used. Instancing was introduced by Funcom with Anarchy Online as far as casual is concerned that is something very common with majorit of video games. Times have changed and so did demographics of players with times. I never found WOW linear since even though it is quest based you don't have to follow any chain quests and game doesn't tunnel you into choosing a specif path. rift questing is what i call linear but not SWTOR or WOW.

The story is a Star Wars story. It has been seen so many times, that calling it unique is just plain fanatism. Choices are dark, light and neutral. How epic is that :P
I don't know what makes you feel the combat heroic, maybe it's graphics that give you the feeling, but all I saw was skills executed in certain order tied to global cooldown. And some that didn't obey GCD and/or procced under certain conditions.
IMHO they should have made another quality RPG with good co-op options. Deep story etc is not really workin out for MMO's...
If they wouldnt have done an MMO I would 100% buy the game, finish it in coop with a friend and afterwards complete on ultra hard to get all achievments etc, but now I wont even glance at it.

No one knows that for sure. Unless you have other MMOS which you can compare to SWTOR and give an example that it failed? even GW2 has a kick ass story behind it and personal storyline in game.
Everone knows Swtor is traditional mmo + story. This has been stated from day one.
You can say it is Wow + story and not be far off the mark but obviously this is greatly overly simplified.
It is like agreeing to eating sh!t with peanut butter on it and then going ahead and eating it without the peanut butter and complaing someone tricked you into eating sh!t. Either way you are eating sh!t but don't pretend you didn't know about it.
Stop being naive is the point.
It was completely justified to expect that the 2 things would combine, rather than feeling just like a fake artificial limb added to a decrepit abomination that is WoW.
And it wasn't hard to do it.
The MMO companies keep on putting new freaky trampy clothes and putting heavy make up on the same rotten-faced old zombie of, blimey, 6 years ago

I am talking about how the game plays, not about listing features. So you can argue all you like about where some feature was introduced. But the fact remains that ever since WoW became a success there have been tons of games trying to copy it and SW:TOR is not an exception.
So you can tell your friends/whatever that this game does not play like WoW but you would, imo, be lying to them.

I have basic understanding to differntitate between SWTOR and WOW. You just gave laundry list of features which existed before WOW. And when i mentioned that, now you changing goal posts yet again. By the way game plays the way it does is because of those feature so you can not seperate the two for sake of your convenince.
Earlier it was because of the features then it was the extent of the features and now it is just about how the game plays. How can anyone argue with someone who flip flops in every post?

Thoes are $0.55 Not 49 cents but pretty damn close.

A group of my friends were in the beta, and this is a wow clone unfortunately :'(

Awaiting Darkfall Unholy Wars
It was completely justified to expect that the 2 things would combine, rather than feeling just like a fake artificial limb added to a decrepit abomination that is WoW.
And it wasn't hard to do it.
The MMO companies keep on putting new freaky trampy clothes and putting heavy make up on the same rotten-faced old zombie of, blimey, 6 years ago
the best blog of the net
