GPU & Case upgrade.. Some opinions on comp to run SWTOR

There are very, very few games that a Radeon HD 6870 won't be able to handle at high settings with a good frame rate.  If the computer can't handle high settings, the video card probably won't be the culprit.

Max settings, on the other hand, is an entirely different critter.  Whether you can run a game at max settings is largely a question of how high they decide to let you turn settings up.  Don't be surprised if trying to max settings makes the video card choke; it probably won't, but in some games, it will.  But that can usually be fixed by turning down or off a few settings that are very GPU intensive but don't make the game look much nicer.

Hellfyre, you're not imaging things; Newegg is cheaper than Tigerdirect.

On the Radeon HD 6870, for instance, both include the same rebate, but Newegg offers a base price that's $20 cheaper, so whether you do the rebate or not, it's $20 cheaper on Newegg.

To be honest, I'm not sure where the impression of Newegg being expensive comes from. They seem to be as competitive as they ever were.

Beyond that, I'd say with the Seasonic PSU, the Rosewill case, and any 6870 (Powercolor cards work as well as any other), you have the best parts you could have picked.

I guess we'll see you in TOR :)

Awsome this is what i want to hear lol :) I can't wait.. Been waiting for years for SWTOR and i thought i was going to have to sludge through it again with this old machine.. But work has picked up so i can afford myself a nice christmas present this year.. Wish i had enough to just purchase a whole new machine but even if i get another year or two more out of this rig then it'd have been worth it.

Thanks everyone and thanks Quizzikal especially.. Saved me some $$ and got me a better set-up then i was planning to.. Ill let you guys know how it turns out when i finish it up..

BTW one last question.. Does new egg have black friday sales? I was told to wait to purchase anything off new egg until friday but i don't see anything on their site saying they're going to have some big huge sale and i don't want any of the parts i want to get to sale out before then.. Should i purchase now or should i wait until friday in hopes of a sale?

Hellfyre, even if it's not in your budget right now, there's some possibility later on when you get a bit of money to upgrade your CPU to one of the AM2+ Phenom II X4 940 CPUs.

They're about $100 even on Ebay (you can't buy them new anymore afaik).

That would be like a whole new system for you. You'd just have to make sure your motherboard could take the new chip.

To answer your other question, Newegg has an entire "Black November", but I can't find any sales pertinent to you yet. That said, more may come about so I'd keep an eye out until the end of the month and see if a sale comes along before purchasing.

    You can keep track here

Yeah CPU is defiantly the next thing im eyeing to get.. But like you im not sure if my motherboard would be able to handle it lol.. Something google could solve though when i get the extra $$ ill defiantly look into it.

I also did a little bit of googleing about new eggs sale and found this -

    http://promotions.newegg.com/NEemail/Nov-0-2011/72HSale11/index-landing.html?nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL111111&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL111111-_-EMC-111111-Index-_-E0-_-ShopBF

Nothing there that i need really though.. They have a nice rosewill case but its $20 more then the case i linked.. Still, it has a nice see through side + its lian li but idk i sort of like the other cases look better lol.. Here it is

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112239&nm_mc=EMC-IGNEFL111111&cm_mmc=EMC-IGNEFL111111-_-EMC-111111-Index-_-ComputerCases-_-11112239-L010B

for $70 its a very nice case.. its almost like 50% off

edit: nvm that sale ended lol.. sucks too cuz they had a 560w psu on sale that would've been $29.99 after mir.. I don't know weather it's a good psu or not though

I recall reading a review of similar Cougar PSUs, and iirc, they were very highly rated, but it was a different line I believe.

My guess is that it would have been good, but that Seasonic unit is very nice, so barring missing the $30 sale, you're still in good shape.

  • QuizzicalQuizzical Member LegendaryPosts: 25,499

No, that Cougar unit is not good.

    http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Cougar-A-Series-560-W-Power-Supply-Review/1332

Both voltage regulation and ripple went out of spec when pulling 560 W from it.  It's better than the Cooler Master piece of junk from earlier, but not as good as the Rosewill green series, let alone the Seasonic or OCZ power supplies that I linked.

One problem with buying power supplies is that often, it's a case of, here's a power supply and I can't find any decent reviews of it from someone who has the proper equipment to test it.  Sometimes you can tell from the specs that it's awful (e.g., a "500 W" power supply rated at 25 A on the +12 V rail), but sometimes, it's not clear one way or the other.  The solution is usually to avoid such power supplies and go with something that you know is good.

After looking it over pretty much all day i've just decided to stick with that.. Did a little looking on hardware secrets and that PSU seems good.. I could also pick up the OZC 700w gameing PSU thats on sale on newegg right now for same price, which also had a good review on hardware secrets but i think ill just stick with the SeaSonic.. Seems a little more reliable from the review.

Now i just gotta wait till after cybermonday.. If nothing i need goes on sale then ima jus suck it up and purchase it all full price lol.. tired of waiting :P

Sorta deviated from the plan.. I saw a shell shocker deal i couldn't pass up today for the psu.. I know Seasonic makes most Antecs and that Antec is a ok psu maker so i just went and ordered it while i could.. I couldn't find any reviews on it or anything on hardware secrets which sort of scares me.. Maybe Quizzikal or someone else can tell me weather i mad a good purchase or not..

Usually is $99 its a shell shocker at $49.99 and has a $15 mir.. Did i do ok? I figure its a 700w antec with free shipping and its still cheaper then that Seasonic 520w psu (which also has $9.99 shipping.)

That power supply is all right, and that is a very good price on it.  It should work nicely for you.

You also could have gotten this, which is significantly better, and cheaper than it was before:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371048

    -----

Also, don't read too much into the "usual" price.  It might have been $100 at some point in the past, but that may have been years ago.  It wouldn't surprise me if it was $70 or $80 or so immediately before the sale.

Sweet good to know i didn't make a mistake with that purchase.. And its weird i been looking at the site for the past 3 days and i never even noticed the high power gamer series antec has up there lol.. Oh well, for $35 I can't complain.. The extra $$ will allow me to pick up on 2 more fans to put in that challanger case.

Now if only tommarow that case + that 6870 gpu will be on a shell shocker deal ill be happy lol

That PSU will do its job just fine, and honestly, what more does one really want?

    HP

    m9500y

Windows Vista (i know i need to upgrade to W7 lol)

    AMD Phenom 9750 Quad-Core Proccessor 2.40 GHz

    8.00 GB RAM

    64-Bit OS

    Nvidia GeForce 9500 GS

I'am told that my computer can indeed run SWTOR.. But it'd have to be on low/min settings and would run terribley.. I'am opt to beleive this because that is how i've had to run almost every MMO i've played from WoW, AION, EvE, and Rift.. And i'am sick of running on 20-30fps while on low/min settings lol..

So I was planning on purchaseing a new graphics card.. Nothing too expensive just something that'd possibley let me run even medium settings on SWTOR.. Here is my plan so far, let me know what you guys think and preferabley people who have beta tested the game what they might think of useing this gpu/set up.

The graphics card i was looking at is a GTX460.. But since it's a inch or more bigger then my current graphics card i'am going to have to purchase a tower case too.. Was looking at some mid-tower cooler masters on new egg to pick up.. And since my current computer is only 350W's i'd have to purchase a PSU.. I was looking at a 500W PSU on new egg that i hope will go for pretty cheap on black friday.. Would that added PSU be enough for me to run the GTX460 and possibley a back lit keyboard? Or do i need a beefier PSU?

Also how much of a difference would it make if i did this? I know my current set up sucks and i've got a little extra cash so i was hopeing by spending it on black friday i can save my self the hassle of purchaseing a brand new computer and still be able to run SWTOR atleast decently.

Thanks guys! Any helps/suggestions on the build would be very much apreciated.. And anyone who knows of a cheap case/gpu/psu that are going on sale black friday and compatiable with my computer then please feel free to list them.. Im not set in stone on the GTX460, it just looked like the most bang for the buck.

Save your money and buy an ice cold slab of beer to enhance the experience.

    Edit; maybe a few.
