Dead horse? Why I like ToR - From a EQ1 beta tester..

B14cKs0LB14cKs0L Member UncommonPosts: 152

So yeah...I can say my MMO experiance extends to when EQ1 was in beta..Since then I have played such games as Asherons Call (Beta test and played 3 years) SWG (beta test and played 1 year- 3rd Jedi unlock with 4 professions) Earth and beyond beta - Eve beta- Eq2 beta-CoH beta-D&D beta-LoTr- beta-WaR beta-WoW beta and played for 3 years.... I can keep going..

What I like about SwToR is #1 story #2 Crew #3 it feels like a BioWare RPG but is an MMO....Oh and the combat is just fun..

When I played Asherons call..I loved the open world, the classless skill system, and full loot PvP!

What I loved about SWG was the Sandbox Feel. i was a Master weapons smith/CH who owned a mall, people paied me money to rent space in my mall, and I had a jedi to play with! MiX/Match classes- It had it problems, but damn what a game..

WoW-Great combat-questing-classes-gfx- WoW took all the accessable and provided it to the masses..While it was NOT the game type I gew up on, it was still refreshing..But I like sanboxes!!

I love me some games like maseffect 1 and 2, Dragon age 1, not two so much....even going back to baulders gate 1 yes I remember the day I bought that game, I lived 3 blocks away from where it was created in BioWare Edmonton..

All that in tell, ToR is a great game!

It is an RPG on line Massive roll playing game..

It has the lay out of an RPG,  the movies, the combat, the crew, the combat, The connection to your avatar..

It has added to that, really cool crafting, Grouping, "Dungeons" PvP and so much more!

In the sameway WoW took so much from all the ones before it, ToR does the same..and is, like wow was when it came out, refreshing..

I can play a MMO, in the style of an single player RPG, With great cuts, voice acting, story, and really connect with my avatar..

but still enjoy all the aspects of good MMO's that came before it..

Crafting, grouping, questing, raiding, PvP...

This game, while not a sandbox, it does copy game befor it, it does not reinvent the wheel, is f**king cool and fun to play. I can get my story/Avatar/combat/lor fill..then I can group, raid, craft, pvp..

Just as WoW took the questing LvLing system, ToR takes the story LvLing system..And I do so much more enjoy the "Story" LvLing system..

As someone that grew up on "Sandbox" "Full loot PvP" no "classed" based LvLing system- as refreshing as WoW was when it launched, so is ToR..

And that is way I like it...

Thanks for your impression. Nice to see someone describe a long history of mmorpg gaming so objectively and without personal grudges. Makes me value your opinion much more.

I guess I find it extremely hard to beleive that sandbox players want to be force down a cattle shoot. This is simply my obversation , and still waiting for that peice of information that makes sense for all of the conversion. Could be that these people where never sandbox players to begin with ?

I can understand to an extent because of how I got ucked into LotrO, I was a fan of the ip, so maybe that is lending itself to a wider array of mmo players ?

Fun trumps challenging any day of the week. image

Nice review, I agree on all points. Great themepark > mediocre sandbox, and almost all of them seem to be like this.

This is an OP i can relate to. I have a similiar gaming background as the OP and after playing TOR, i feel the same way. The game is just damn refreshing and fun. If, as a gamer you are just totally deadset against playing nothing but a pure sandbox type game then no one should try and change your opinion on it. I will say though, by not even trying the game out for yourself, you could possibly be missing out on a very addicitng and fun MMORPG.

Sho nuff shogun of harlem. I wasn't around when SWG was awesome since I was deployed when it was in it's prime. I tried it after the nerf and didn't enjoy it. I think a large portion of that was due to the mass exodus and the overall unhappiness of the community durintg the transitional phase more than the game itself.

The only 2 games that have held my interest for longer than a year were FFXI and WoW. I spent a little overa year in FFXI and about three in WoW off and on.

I thought your thread was actually pretty insightful. Not because you listed all the things you like about the game, but because you list your background and how even someone that has been around the block has found enjoyment in his short amount of time in TOR.

Now with that being said I would honestly like to know what really stood out the most. The game has a refreshing feeling but most do when you first try them. Do you think the game has mechanics in place that gives you the impression it will be a game that gives the playerbase longjevity?

I really enjoy crafting in MMO's and you mentioned it as well. The henchmen doing your crafting for you was a huge turnoff for me. Does the crafting system seem like it is little more than stat bonuses (looking at you WoW) or overly tediouse like the FF MMo's? I think a good crafting system in a game can have impacts on it's social side so I was hoping to hear more on it.

I have many more questions but those 2 were my biggest ones. I am not an anti raider, but I do like for a game to have more going on than just a rush to the finish line only to have just raiding to keep you interested. I am also an altohalic and really enjoy playing a game through a few times. Games like Rift got it horribly wrong for people like me and I hope TOR's stories don't get old after you have done them once. I played KOTOR through once for each path and found that little to nothing changed with the dialogue options so the whole choice in conversation really had little impact onthe actual story. It only changed the ending. I hope this is not the case for TOR because I would hate to roll an alt only to experience a majority of the game the exact same way.

Having played in the latest beta, and being somone who didnt see much interest in sw:tor i have to agree with the op.  It was refreshing to me that everything they "Copied" from other games they did extremly well.

The questing system was something i was scyptical about because im one of the people the skip quest text in previous games, but was pleasently surprised in how interested i was in listening to everything going on. the choices that you get to make may not have much impact at the time but the ability to chose was awesome.

Yes the combat is not inovative but if you like any of the other theme park mmo's you will like tor's combat. its smooth and flowing.  the animations fit well into the graphics / art style.  I did get to do a flashpoint  (instance) with a group and was fun. the choices everyone made in there story seem to affect what was goin on in the instance.  we failed to complete it, not because it was to difficult but we just didnt work well together, people trying to do there own thing.

all in all even for me, someone who had almost zero intrest in tor i had a lof of fun.  even if things were copied it felt good to see that it was implemented very well and the beta completly changed my mind about the game and i will probabbly be pre ordering it soon

For me it was the following: Feeling a connection with my Avatar brought through with story questing. -Architecture of the SITH empire was nice. The fact that if I want to just play a great game like ME2, or DAO I can, I got story, crew mates I can equip, Advance my story..

Or if I was in an MMO mood, I could run side quests with others such as the epic area in zones..Flash points..PvP

While story is great, you have them for each class, so you will endup doing the same side quests, but you always have a unique story per class to drive ya along..

I really enjoy crafting in MMO's and you mentioned it as well. The henchmen doing your crafting for you was a huge turnoff for me.      Crafting at lvl 25 was already better than WoW crafting, and I was using items that I crafted for sure. WoW crafting was crafting 100 usless items 100 times to make 1 good thing. Now the thing that does kinda suck is you WILL have to grind some crafting ala WoW, but you can sell more of the items you grind on, and use more..

So it's not perfect but with all the enhancement slots on all the items and gear, its nice..

And to be honest, I enjoy crafting also, AC crafting was great, SGW was the best ever, WoW just blew..

I dont mind making my crew grind out the crafting for me..Plus while questing, or running a flashpoint, I can start sending out crew members to gather and run mission and craft..So itis not me standing at a crafting station for 45 min crafting a iron bar..

Good review OP.  I have a same backround as well.  My only serious issue with this game is the solo combat challenge, or lack there of.  The no tactics or strategy involved in WoW soloing seems to have found it's way into this game.  Where's the CC abilities?  Oh, PvP is limiting CC abilities.  And even if they weren't balancing for PvP you wouldn't need CC due to the ease of everything.

The linear leveling paths I can stomach (although I don't like it), but the main part of the game you will be soloing in combat, why not make it use some form of strategy or thought.  At least make me kite something or pay attention to the mobs actions.  WoW started the no thought everyone just jams buttons and tanks the mob soloing, even if they're a caster.  They are clearly not trying to get us EQ1 people, they want the more casual give me everything now browser game crowd.

Pretty good write up from the OP, you hit the nail on the head. SWToR is the first MMO that really feels like a rpg. That is why I am interested.

Thanx for the response. I remain on the fence about it. I am signed up for beta so I will se if I am allowed to test it to form my own opinion. I know that a lot of my concerns won't be alleviated by a weekend in a beta, but some of the glaring ones can be answered from the get-go.

Maybe I just suck at the game, but I definatley died more in the first 15 levels of SWTOR than I did in the first 30 levels of wow. I found that if you didn't pay attention or use your cc's you would eventually pay the price. Yes not every mob group is challenging but I had some pretty challenging fights.

Same thing with me.  I died on my Bounty Hunter a ton during those first 15 solo levels.  I do know that that seriously tuned up the mobs in the 11/11-11/13 build to create a greater challenge.

This game is definitely not a walk in the park solo experience anymore.

Yet haters (who didn't even play) continue to pretend it is "not an MMO". Poor blind liars.

Great post, OP. It's good to read an experienced and informed opinion of the game thus far. All your points help highten my excitement for release, and even for the big test this weekend. I'm also very interested in hearing opinions from previous SWG players, as I still have a big Star Wars MMO related hole left to fill and really REALLY hope this will do the trick.

I tested the game back last year for the Commando EU test and had a lot of fun, so I can't wait to see how it has progressed up to now!

I think you just hit the nail on the head for me about what appeals to me most about TOR.  I tend to fall in love with the characters I create in MMO's.  Sometimes I play them like who I am in RL, and sometimes I create alts with a really good or really bad attitude and enjoy playing the "role".  This game makes connecting to my toon a lot easier and a lot deeper through the stories that are told.  I don't know how to describe it really but even after just a weekend I found myself wanting to go back and reconnect with the chracters again. lol

There have been a bunch of changes to mob AI recently that I have not gotten the chance to test. I am hoping that basic mob AI has gotten better.
