Bioware's account security is horrible :|!

So, I told my friends I'd ACTUALLY play this SWTOR weekend open-beta test to actually say I "tried" to play the game to form an opinion. Even though I've seen this game 90 times before, but you can't judge a book 100.00% without actually playing it right?

So what happens? I get the download link on my profile page, and move on to the account secret passwords page to setup my account security. Low & behold, once I set ALL my FIVE security questions the FIRST question it asks when I try to log in is my 4th question. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, their system doesn't work properly and didn't save the correct answer, which i typed CORRECTLY going into the form, and then again trying to log in.

So what to do when your security question is broken? Well, they gave us FIVE security questions to fill out, BUT unless you pass the one they give you "randomly" the FIRST time it CONTINUES to ask you the SAME security question. So what exactly was the point for the other 4? On top of that, who asks for a security question on just LOGGING IN? Seriously :(?

So now, since it's Bioware & the HUGE test weekend coming up, their customer support is so backed up I haven't had any news from them for 2days now. So I have my email telling me I can "RSVP!" for the SWTOR weekend, but cannot start the download -.-!

Just go back to your account info and update your secret questions again and save. Then go back and log into the launcher and it should work and download.

The security question is a godsend to me. I would rather have to answer a security question and enter an authenicator key every single time than get hacked again.

The way it is going to work though is if you login to your account from a different location then usual it asks the security question. So someone from say, China, could not steal your account unless they knew your security answers. It is sort of like the coin lock system in Rift in that sense.

Unless they found your account info via a Trojan to begin with. Meaning they just need to search for phrases or words you entered within minutes of logging into your account. It wouldn't be very hard, meaning Bioware's method is VERY inefficient, if not completely ineffective.

Jesus Christ, wtf can anybody here do?  Quit your complaining which isn't gonna get you anywhere, & instead contact customer support.  Simple.  Do you really need somebody to tell you that?

  • GormokGormok Member Posts: 379

Asking on the official TOR forums would help you with that, people had that same problem and found a work around for it.

Complaining here allows him to rage in rightous indignition before a crowd of those with no prior experience with the game.

    Other than that?  Nothing.

Hey OP, "beta".  I know, right?  The humanity of it all, something not working as it should during a beta test.  Truly we should go forth as a mob with pitch forks and torches and publicy castrate them for their terrible account security.  We must save the peasants from the hackathon that will so clearly plague us upon the release of SWTOR.

True if you did have to enter a security question every time, but obviously it won't work that way. I was just saying that for sake of argument that I would rather key in some extra non-sense every time then get hacked.

In order to hack an account with the security question set when the system is fully in place you would have to get a trojan on the computer pretty much when they create the account. Unless you are constantly logging on from different locations, you would be pretty safe. Sure it would not be unstoppable, but it would certainly help. Companies like Blizzard could learn a thing or two from Trion and Bioware.

I can live with the security question thing..  what I can't seem to understand is their 'reset password' and unable to login nonsense.

This didn't happen to me, but a friend.   He'd been long since signed up on swtor.com, same password, email, etc forever.  Checked in regularly on the site.   Then Bioware sends out the thing saying they are changing the Password Rules on all accounts created before a certain date, and everybody has to update.

I think that date was some time back in late October (about a month ago.)  since, my friend still can not access his SWTOR account.    Every day, he puts in a password reset, every day, one never sent.   Support requests from Bioware have gone unanswered for him for ast least the month since he's been locked out.

So while security questions can be annoying, so can not accessing your account at all becuase their sh*t is broke.

Having seeing and even attempting to help my friend with his account troubles, I can say that if this is what logging into the game / account page / etc will be like Bioware is going to have a sh*t storm of angry people in a really big hurry.

I do hope they sort it out.

being that it said you only have to enter the security question when logging in from a new computer or after suspicious activity... wont use it a lot I assume

You only had to fill out 3 questions >.> it was stated in bold.

Surely you could remember the answer to your question thro trial and error? i mean it wasnt that long ago you submitted it right?

So you type your security answer wrong (yes you did) and that means Bioware's security is horrible.

    OK.

    Worked fine for me. :(

  • RoinRoin Member RarePosts: 3,444

Definitely user error. I entered my 5 answers, and got asked the moment I logged into to patch up game.   Had no problems at all.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

  • VolgoreVolgore Member EpicPosts: 3,872

    Same problem here.

Downloaded the installer, made an account.

-Launcher told me i had to verify my account

-Verified the account with setting up the 5 questions

-Launcher asked me one of them which i answered correctly, as the answer was only "eeeee"

-Launcher kicked me back to the loginscreen, but still displaying the secret question screen at the same time. Weird picture that was.

Got back into my account management, got told my account got locked for a reason.

Now clicking back and forth in FF with my mousebuttons brings me through the account management of various OTHER USERS incl. their details!!!

This whole beta setup process is a total mess for me. I had to F5 every swtor-page like crazy, constantly getting a blank screen. Every fk'in mail, link, whatever needed some varification, confirmation.

I haven't even downloaded the client yet. Fk it Bioware, shove your crap elsewhere.

Well, if you were to have keylogger on your system its you're fault not theirs if you get hacked. Now, if they're systems are compromised thats whole different story.

They system is more than efficient for security.. They can't help it if you get a keylogger from downloading porn.

The title threw me.  When I hear of terrible account security, I think a weakness in the system.  Like another user said, go to the official forum and see whats up or go to your account and resubmit.  A pain and something they need to work on for sure, but hardly a catastrophic problem that needs its own thread.

I self identify as a monkey.
