not totally free. if you buy the game (and i suggest the Total Experience to get completely caught up) then you won't get charged for your first 30 days. you still have to enter billing info, it just wont be used until the first 30 days are up, you can cancel before that if you don't like it.
you'll still have to buy the game though. TE goes from $20 to $30 depending on your location and the store.

it's arguable that SWG is at a peak of popularity (at least since initial release). in business you just don't give away what people are willing to sell.
should recent high numbers taper off, we may see the return of free trial periods as an effort to spur interests from new consumers.

It's a best seller right now due to EPIII and ROTW coming out at the same time. Not to mention the marketing blitz.
If/When sales slow down they will probably put out a trial.
