Originally posted by monstermmo Ive read a lot of negative feedback about the space combat and its basically always the same thing. While i understand that it may not feel like its meant to be there you should know it obviously is. Its Star Wars. I think its cool that the game offers something completely different on the side in an MMORPG. If the game didnt have any space combat i think a lot of Star Wars fans would be like "wtf."
The space combat is a lot like the space combat from the movies. There isn't a whole lot of it, and it follows a script. I can understand people wanting a fully functional space game, but that would be an entire game in itself. I really enjoyed StarFox so I'll probably enjoy it.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I think many will find that no matter how much you've heard about how great the story is, you'll still find it better than what you expected. It's such an enjoyable feature that I can't conceive of future MMOs not copying this just like they all copy the WOW AH... it's that game changing.
But space combat feels like you're playing an early 80's arcade game and although that can be fun for a little while as a retro (or new to young players) experience, it quickly becomes boring and feels just tacked-on... there is talk about improving and enhancing this feature to make it more Wing Commander-like which would be a blast.... but it's so bad right now they really should just get rid of it until they can roll-out a version that has a similar quality to the rest of the game.

Question. Is the story good enough that its worth picking up as a single player RPG? I know I'm not interested in it as an MMO. My reasons are really mechanics of the game itself. That said if I find myself running thin on Skyrim, Saints row 3 content and Tribes Ascend turns out to be a flop is SW:TOR worth grabbing if for nothing else than the storyline? I dont worry about the MMO aspect since it wont cost more to buy than any other game out there and I am pretty sure I could nock at least a couple classes storyline within the first month.
I'm not going to make a review recommendation at this point, but I will say the story is certainly top notch and I could see it being a huge draw on its own if that helps!

It does and thanks. I'll have to remember this for one of thoes "pick up on sale" titles or when I'm completely bored of whatever else I'm playin. Like I said not a themepark MMO type of guy but Bioware has always had solid stories so your comment tells me its one of thoes and to me that makes it worth the box price alone if there isnt anything else to play at the time

I think it's possible to play the game as a single player game. You would be skipping some group content though. If you're just not interested in being in an organized group or guild kind of thing, then you should be able to play it just fine, especially if you're not averse to joining random groups.
I am a 'solo' player and I found the game plenty enjoyable. It is not the same experience as a single player game. There are other players around you doing stuff and some of it can be annoying. Some of it can be amusing.
I don't avoid groups though...I'm perfectly happy putting groups together for instances and heroic quests, joining groups in PvP, joining in local and global chat, etc. Having people around me doing random things isn't annoying.
** edit **
I found myself logging in to play because of the story.
The story is really all I'm wondering about. I havent bashed the game once and hope it does well but the combat ect isnt really what I'm lookin for out of an MMO. But Bioware has always had verry solid stories and figured it may be worth the box price or even a bargin bin pickup for that alone. I'm not one that looks at say the combat and says "well this game blows and has nothing going for it". I'm one that goes "Ok thats not for me longterm."
Did you play the same game as me? Huge portions of the game require grouping, and you can skip grouping and try to play the game solo, but you'll be missing out on a huge number of quests, storylines, loot and other such stuff.
When I played you had to group to complete heropic quests, and that was where I got the best loot right there on the tutorial planet, and you had to group to complete flashpoints, of which there are over a dozen in game. You can also group to do regular quests because why not?
If anything, I was surprised how much of the game required you to be in a group and if I was a solo player I'd be bummed out that I'd be missing so much stuff.
But you go ahead and keep repeating the "THIS GAME IS A SINGLE PLAYER GAME" lie because the NDA is down and everyone can call you the liar that you are.

If you like mmorpg, and a story is the most important feature, then SW:ToR is the game for you. Well, assuming you like Star Wars that is. If the sight of a Wookie gives you hives, you might want to skip the game.
I found the combat to be a little clunky. I only played the Trooper though, and the Trooper class seems a little clunky...like it can't decide if it's a ranged class or a melee class.
I also found the professions to be pretty opaque, confusing even. I expect this will be addressed either by launch or soon after. If nothing else they'll update the website with information.
Overall though? I logged in to find out what was going to happen next with my character, clunky combat and all.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
well i was in tbhe last weekend beta nd will be in this weekends as well.
I LOVE the story element. What is supper nice is that all the quests seem to fit. yes there is the old stand by kill x of these mobs but here it fits in with the other quests and the basic atmosphere of the world.
As for rails well I saw no difference between SWTOR and any other MMO ( excluding eve).
I was very pleasently surprised that force characters did not control the game. The balance between the abilites of force and non force characters was well done.
The pvp both in the open world and in the minigames was balanced. One thign that was nice in the mini games was the bracket was 10-49 for the ones i was in and yet even when i first went in at lvl 10 i did not feal like i was an anchor to my team. I was really able to hold my own do to the buff we were given.
The campaions seem to come alive. Somethign one would expect from a company that gave us baulders gate and Dragon age origins to name a few.
The character creator could use soem beefing up but then I never saw anyone who could pass for a relation to my character the whole weekend.
I will say if you are not into the story/RP part of the game it might wear on you. For myself i enjoyed the Voice acting and what takes place in the ( for lack of a better tearm) mini quest cut scenes.
Magic is impressive, but now Minsc leads! Swords for everyone!
well I just realized that I cannot play the game here.AND I GOT IN THE DAMN BETA...that's sad, I dont really see why they have to limit the game to a few regions

lwllw - are you getting the stupid "a region you cannot play from " error on the launcher? It's a wrong error message (irony FTW).
Make sure your security questions are set up on the site, and then close and reopen the launcher until it asks you one, once you've put in a correct answer it should work properly after that.
I don't even know why that error message exists tbh, it's just freaking people out.
Ive been in the beta for several builds now, so I'll take a shot at a couple of questions for ya:
Did you find that the lack of a robust character generator and the lack of any kind of appearance system detracted from your ability to "identify" with your character...the ability that the story-telling is there to enhance?
Did you feel that the lack of breadth of features compared to other MMOs, many of which are F2P, was disturbing? For example, the UI, lack of guild support, lack of social interaction (95% of gameplay is solo rpg style), lack of hobbies, etc....Or do you think BW is going to deliver in some of these areas post-launch?
Did the linear, on rails, nature of the gameplay...not surprising in a "story driven" MMO...interfere with your ability to feel immersed in the star wars universe? Did BW go soooo Themeparkish that they made it impossible for players to get an immersive, virtual star wars experience to craft their own story, instead of just riding the rollercoaster of BW story?
Thx.
Need to prep myself for another big mmo fail. Was hoping for the best, but my fears have come to life. Yet another label that doesnt know how to make an mmorpg for people that already have played other mmorpgs and are looking for the "next"thing...im so not buying this game...*sigh
I'm just not excited by what I've read so far, it just sounds like there's too much of the "been there, done that" element. I sincerely doubt that TOR will be on my gaming horizon. Will most probably wait for the "bargain bin" prices in 6 months' time and then play it for the story, unless there's something better to do at that point.
That said, I'll be in my first beta test weekend starting tomorrow. It will be interesting to see for myself what SWTOR is all about. Who knows, perhaps it will change my mind ?
I'm not going to predict a "massive fail" or "wow killer" status for TOR, because either way it will make no difference to me personally. Whatever the outcome, it will however probably have a big impact on the way MMO's will be developed in future, simply because of it's huge media presence and supposed development cost.
Faction vs faction conflict...24/7..persistent.Not the mini games. Can any detail what the state of the game is. I hear...right or wrong most of this is on LLUM. Whats your experience been ? Or is this yet to be finished ?
Yeah, it is worth buying even if you go into it thinking of the game as KOTOR3. That is how I originally approached it myself. I was very surprised by how good the game is, actually.
Mike, I totally agree with you on the space combat. I can't stand it. I would rather the game ship with NO space combat than thion90's console game that they have slapped on.
I do find the 'Freedom' in the title a bit misleading at first glance.
There i nothing about this game that promotes 'freedom'.
Not criticising it for that, it's a linear stroy driven themepark so a lack of freedom is basic to it's design for better or worse, but it isn't a word I would associate with the game.
I don't know where the body of people posting about group stuff have been playing but, since around 1999 I have been playing a lot of mmo's and I have yet to run across one that required a group just to get lvls. The groups were needed mostly for end game content. Even in wow the low lvls dungeons I soloed them just had to get 3-5 lvls higher then the stuff in there and they were not hard, in vanilla wow they were a challenge still but doable. These days in wow the only thing you need a group for is end game raids and such.
This has been my experince in all the games Earth & Beyond, WoW, Lotro, Everquest,Eve,SWG,Tabula Rasa .... and the list goes on so I don't see why people are surprised this one is like that.
My biggest disappointment with SW:TOR is the space, wether or not bioware likes it this game will be compaired to SWG and for those that actually did the space stuff it was fun and intense and not on rails. Especially the space pvp, many did not try space or were so bad at it that they did not experince the fun but, I know a great many pilots who hated space and after I built them a ship load out they came around and ended up loving space.
I am not one of those meatheads that is going to say it was a conspericay over the last few years of galaxies to end SWG and start SW:TOR but, the timing of the closing of galaxies and the opening of SW:TOR reaks of being planned at least since SW:TOR approaches launch.
The other thing I was disapointed in was the lack of charactor options. Namly the lack of ablity to make acharactor that is not huge breasted. then again one poster is correct in the fact that once you get the uber armor the charactor details do not really matter because no one will see them anyway.
I love the little details, I love the fact that the light sabre not only collapse but gets hung on the belt when not in use, I love the animations in general it looks more like a fight should especially the explosives involved when the charactors abilitys have such things and being able to change the color of your blasters by changing a crystal is just cool.
In general I am impressed with the game feels like most others but, the story sucks you in to a new way of thinking about your charactors progress and the dark side light side thing actually makes a difference!! I have seen this first hand playing, the choices you make will affect your progress, games have needed that for a good long time.
I'm starting to like this game. God help me! But it is one more broken chain to WoW. Yes, with another shackle added. But Sith looks so cool so I don't care. Dammmmmmn,.

This was pretty much expected from the start. It'll be another few years before the first MMO comes along that strays off the beaten path. It's a shame I know.
But the reality is that a lot of people are quite fond of the classic "WoW"-ish style of gameplay and that it's still a risk for any mmo developer to stray off the beaten path. And in reality, it will take something revulotionary to please the masses.
In theory, theory and reality are the same. In reality they're not.
I do find the 'Freedom' in the title a bit misleading at first glance.
