"This was the most difficult decision that we have ever had to make," said Mark Jacobs, CEO and president of Mythic Entertainment, in a statement. "However, our tremendous success with Dark Age of Camelot set the standard for Mythic of releasing nothing less than triple-A games, and Imperator was simply not meeting that standard."

Atleast this means they will be working on DAOC and Warhammer online :D Shame because this Imperator game did look amazing!

    Another one bites the dust....

At least they knew their game was sub-par and decided to ax it before people wasted money paying for it.  Plus it was still early in development, so I'm sure not too much money was lost to it...a plus for Mythic.

I think because DAOC has been getting more popular and they brought Warhammer online, that they wanted to focus on that maybe!

Imperator was a pretty bland-looking game ,but I still think Mythic needs to look toward something fresh.  Not continue improving DAoC, or even WHO.  Screw WHO, we have enough of that.

And if they don't start something soon they're just going to slowly kill themselves in the same way as UO.  Eight years is enough, boys, forget the elves, sheesh.

Hence the reason I always consider a game that is not yet in release vaporware. Until you can put your paws on it, it just ain't real.

The game looked interesting to me when it was first announced. Somthing in my spirit told me it won't suceed and it's sad it didn't

It was probably a smart move on Mythic's part.  Sci-Fi MMORPG's seem to be a lot harder to develop than the fantasy genre games but it's just a shame that after 3 years of development they are shelving it.  Seems like a waste of resources to me, but it's probably for the best.

I don't agree with WHO though.  It's be hashed and re-hashed over and over and I doubt we'll see much of a community interest in it.  Never know though.

    i respectfully disagree.

Warhammer has a good number of followers trough the Game Workshop name and even if Warhammer Fantasy is not as popular as the Warhammer 40k, the recent release of the second edition RPG is gonna rise interest in that franhcise as well (not that it need such interest).

In addition, the Warhammer world has never been a cookie cutter Fantasy setting. is a very Dark fantasy one, Gothic even, where cities are all but a safe haven and magic is controlled by the forces of Chaos.

The setting is also deep in intrigues and conflict, between rival countries, racial hatred, civil wars and downright Chaos invasion, the world can, potentially, be a very lively one.

Of course, one need to see how Mythic will rise up to the challenge, but seeing DAoC, i have some expectation for their new product. Surely the setting is very well prepared for some massive Realm Vs Realm action, i just hope they won't just make DaOC: the warhammer version.

I doubt it quite strongly, even if a development cycle of just 2-3 years tell me they are gonna use some elements from DAoC for sure, at least the graphical engine. (ususally MMorpgs take 4-5).

As for why imperator got the shaft, well any opinion is valid, but i think that is no coincidence the ax come mere months after the Warhammer license announcement. Imperator is not based around any known legends or book series, just the mystical allure of the Roman Empire, but in space...

    Have a nice day

This is yet another confirmation that Fantasy settings are far more popular than sci-fi.
So for people that ask why there are not enough sci-fi games around, the answer is that there are not too many people interested in it.

Imperator looked good, but the fact that sci-fi fans are limited and the games was going to be released approx the same period as Tabula Rasa, for those reason Mythic decided that Imperator wasn't commercially viable.

Anyway I am happy that they are concentrating their resorces on Warhammer, the setting of this game are awesome and if mythic gets it right,  warhammer could be a cult game.

yep i agree that Warhammer should be dark and gritty as the WH universe is, i think the warhammer game that captured that feel the best was the recent rts one, tho it was based on WH:40k and scifi, but it had a great atmosphere.

Sony and Microsoft are such NICE companies they don't want to take all my money at all, no I like multi-national conglomerates to be in charge of my gaming experience these types of companies are so caring and really look out for a player's individual needs. Why would I like to support a small, indie developer that is trying to make a difference when I can buy ALL the clones that Sony and M'soft throw my way. Hmm, perhaps its the millions & millions they spend on marketing that has sunk in my brain and I've been conditioned into a FOOL. ::::04::

    LOL
    Lets see
I pay $21.95 a month and play 3 MMO's on it and have the ability to play hmmm 3 others... and a bunch of smaller online games as well.....

    How bout you there chiefie?

And if I wasn't playing SWG, EQ2 and PlanetSide (mostly SWG and Planetside to be honest) I'd probably be playing EVE (which IS a small indie developer) and I'd STILL say the same thing about RV's pricing plan.

All I have to say is news like this and Wish being cancelled just makes me loose faith and get frustrated with the entire genre.

  • ElnatorElnator Member Posts: 6,077

To be honest I kind of had a feeling this one wouldn't make it back when they first announced it. Sci Fi is tough enough to break into but playing around with the whole romans in space theme has killed many a sci-fi single player game, let alone an MMO.

There just isn't enough interest in that. Even books along that theme line dont seem to work too well. Which is why I was surprised when they initially announced imperator would be based on a rome that survived...

I hope Mythic doesn't give up on producing a Sci-Fi MMO... it would be really exciting for them to produce a good one because they DO produce quality games and support them well. I'd say that thus far Mythic and CCP are the two best MMO producers out there speaking strictly on stability & quality of their products.

Such a shame to hear but game Devs need to focus on making something really "new" and not just another EQ ish game in another setting...

And there are loads of us that dislike fantasy games in general, nothing wrong with Sci-Fi as long as it is done well. Most Sci-Fi mmorpgs that fail to draw folk in do so because they are poor games.
