It was my first MMO and it has no match when it comes to the crafting. I give full credit to Raph Koster. The replay value with the point system was never met. Without getting in to coulda, woulda, shoulda, I'll just say it was a frontier game. I don't expect to ever see the likes of it again.
swg pre nge was my first morg and that will always be the gold standard. No other game i've played since has the depth of that and especially the sense of community, the excitement, and bigness of the world, the interactivity of the classes.. just excellent (pre nge)
i'm trying to keep my expectations down for tor because its not a sandbox. I played the two mass effect games and found their format enjoyable so i'm hoping to have fun in a different way than swg
Thank you for your writeup. It is nice to be able to read an article where someone is reflecting on the good times after so many years of people being bitter over the CU and NGE. I played SWG since 2004 and weathered alot of changes, and I don't regret a moment.
There isn't a game that can compare to the variety that galaxies offered their players. I will miss the player housing, crafting and silly things like fishing and hunting.
Galaxies didn't die in 2005 it evolved into a different game that provided SIX years of fun for some of us....
The whole feal of the game was rustic and completely customizable and alive in every degree(sandbox). It weeded out the people who needed there hands heald through out the game and lacked imagination, creativity, exploration, and/or patience; which in turn left a great community of more muture and fun people to hang and work with.
I'm just kind of upset that SOE will not allow anyone to create an account and log in anymore. They should have done like Turbine did with AC2 and simply make it F2P for the final month or so to where anyone could log in and pay tribute to what was a good game for its time.
Stupid SOE, if they would open servers with code that was prior to the NGE they would have plenty of players. Many would start over if this were the case.
Smedley is the perfect example of how NOT to run any kind of a business. What a complete idiot!
WTF ARE THESE INDUSTRY EXECS DOING? DO THEY NOT READ THE PUBLICS OPINION? DO THEY NOT HAVE A PR REPRESENTATIVES WHOSE JOB IS TO GAUGE THE MARKET'S OPINION?
Would it really hurt to leave one server open with the PRE-CU code? or is it completely gone? Can they sell the license off to a smaller company and let them open up a server with the old skill system? Kind of like what D&D did with the 3.5 license and how Pathfinder took it and ran with it.
Then again it is the Star Wars IP and I am sure Lucas has SOMETHING to do with the closing of SWG. So to solely blame SOE is unfair.
Thing is I have never been a Star Wars fan. Oh the movies were fun but I never understood the hype.
That said SWG was, is and (what a shame) most likely ever will be the greatest game I have played. I was there on day one. CU did not really bother me much for I preferred to play social classes (dancer, musician, crafter/salesperson), but turning it from a magnificent sandbox to a penny arcade theme park made me very, very angry.
For me it was not the Star Wars name but the unmatched game mechanics that hooked me for years. So I don't care how long ago or what galaxy it takes place in, I just want a gaming company to take a leap of faith and produce another MMO as unbelievable as SWG.

I agree here. I wish they would make another mmo that had the game mechanics of SWG. It kept me hooked many many many years. The crafting, player housing concept, the open worlds, explorations, profession skill tree, actual vendors (not auction houses), and so much more.
I wish game companies would stop following WOW around like a dog on a leash and just go back to the way mmo's once were. MMO's just seem dumbed down, lack the features, lack the exploration, and crafting has never felt better than in SWG.

Just my opinion of course.
Check out "the repopulation" it touts many features of SWG.

I will ignore every other bit of information and just say this: Two programmers/developer hybrids. That scares me or more to the point, that isn't enough to make an MMO of any worth. Im sorry

I do not know anything about the game I linked nor the developers... that said..
Check out Minecraft.
I think everything is worth a look and just because it is not a AAA funded title does not mean it is not good.

Bye Bye SWG even though you were already dead in 2005.
Best Game ever til NGE. Best Freedom experience, best
community, best economic, best combat system ever until 2005.
RIP

SWG was one of the most revolutionary games ever made. So much complexity and different ways to play. It was one of the best just on that merit alone.
So farewll to SWG and a big middle finger salute to SOE.

Good bye my friends
Precu SWG, the most overrated thing on the planet, you know, if it was so good, it would still be around.
SWG sucked, it always sucked, the only thing it ever had was the star wars license.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
