Right now tons of these companies are asking you to plunk over loads of cash for costume pieces for your toon.
Costume pieces....
Some are asking you to fork over the cash for items that give stats and are impossible to get elsewhere.
If ArenaNet puts together an expansion or DLC with an excellent story or storyline and asks money for it I don't see the problem in truth.
In fact, I respect them more for it.
What I do see a problem with? When companies charge a premium for content developed with monies received for paid subscriptions. It's basically asking that you purchase content you have paid for already.
Shhh dont tell them yet gw2 is gonna have a cash shop. What no way your lying. Nope cash shop. How did u think other then box sales they were gonna make any money.

You realize that is not a secret at all? They've been pretty open about this from the start.
Troll is a harsh word,......It's not like I'm picking on the players. In fact I'm just saying keep this in mind. Both you and I know 95% of video games ever produced are garbage. Yet developers for some reason can get away with a lot. Name any other product that can pull the crap like video game developers?
Many mmo's are advertised pre- released claiming to be the best thing since sliced bread yet look at what we get.
OK, I'll name a few for you that need them to be spelled out :
- Vanguard
- Warhammer
- AOC
- WoW expansions
- Champions Online
- FF14
Sooo out of this short little list of many more. How many were tricked by developers ?....Close to all of us !
I'm not saying GW2 will be garbage, in fact I really believe it will be a quality game. Hay I'm even gonna buy it !.....I'm just telling you what NCSoft is gonna pull on us......
ANET has to make money somehow right? i am sure they are not running a charity. I don't mind how many xpacs they release as long as i am getting lots of content to keep me busy.

Personal enjoyment is subjective and thats true 100 percent of the time.
We all come in here with opinions. Whether you like the game or not, does not add weight to your baseless accusation.
You come in here hooting and hollering "BELIEVE ME, Cause its my opinion! I know it will happen!"
It might lay people's fears to rest to read about Guild Wars: Utopia, the cancelled standalone which got remade into Eye of the North. Originally ArenaNet's plan for GW was to release content every 6 months and they were frustrated about the things they wanted to do but had to leave out of the game because they didn't have the time. There were other reasons as well which all combined to them wanting to make GW2, but if anything, we'll probably see even larger, more infrequent expansions than in GW1.
I don't think ArenaNet is running a charity with its B2P model. They're out to make money, same as everybody else. What the B2P model does is reduce the barrier to getting into the game and staying in it. It's probably going to be cheaper than a P2P game (maybe $100 a year instead of $180). It forces them to put out great content that people have to voluntarily pay for (and don't need to buy to play the game, unlike other games which have raised the level cap and killed off old zones). Any loss of revenue from not having a subscription can be offset by increased box sales (peak subs for City of Heroes were probably 200-300k, GW1 sold 1 million boxes in 6 months, 2 million just after a year)
The sooner they can get this game out the door, the sooner they can start charging for it and begin work on expansions. Sure, they could possibly hold something back for a DLC/expansion but I'm not sure it would be in their best interests. ArenaNet has a lot of goodwill with its fanbase. If they were going for a money grab, why not keep putting out $15 DLCs for GW1 for the past 3 years or have charged for all the Guild Wars Beyond content instead of putting it out for free?
And if they do put out a ton of expansions, we don't have to buy them if they aren't quality, or if we feel like they are going for a money grab. If they are worth buying, so much better for us.

Not many were "tricked"... The only game I've played in this list is WOW with expansions till cataclysm, rest of them I don't plan on playing or tried them when they hit the "Free to play" rolercoster.
You are wrong about 1 thing, NCSoft doesn't have much of the influence on ANet... NCSoft only publishes the game and does the job which comes with it, so don't be so sure about it... As a long time player of GW1 I can tell you to expect better things from ANet than the rest of the developers, but I'm guessing only GW1 players understand what I'm talking about...
Till the game hits the stores I guess most of the ppl who never played GW1 and heard about ANet just recently will say the same thing (and it's only because they're lazy to google gw1 and gw2 and a bit of anet history) mostly... It's funny how I didn't see anyone on this forum opening a topic "ANet is such a great company... " or something simillar, but I do see how ppl are bashing the developers and being sceptical when that team is one of the few teams which do games with passion and have PLAYERS in mind, not the MONEY as a main thought.

OT, but the guts of what was going to be GW:U became the foundation of GW2. Specifically, the Dynamic Event system was going to be the new core mechanic of GW:U (the way heroes were for Nightfall). In fact, they began testing the DE system with GW1 before they had a working version of the new GW2 engine.

Nobody was 'tricked' I would venture to say that the developers of all these games wanted to put out a good product. Some had to rush to production, some just weren't able to deliver what was promised (for a variety of reasons), and some just made bad calculations on what the players wanted. Its just like movies. They don't try to trick people into watching it, they honestly think that they are putting something out that people will enjoy. Mind they are sometimes disastriously wrong and you wonder what they were thinking, but it usually isn't done with malicious intent. Unlike the apparent caniving and sinister motives that the gaming community seems to love to ascribe.

Only played Vanguard and Warhammer of that list...Got my money out of Warhammer, it wasn't what I hoped for, but I got my cash out of it...Vanguard I loved, till they stopped supporting it, which they started doing again...
Their are no guarantees, a game was often 40-60 bucks, heck you can drop $15 at a movie just by yourself and $30 with your wife/date...For 90 minutes of something you might not like...
Name me a business industry in general that doesn't get away with stuff like this! People still play all those games you listed, and some are overjoyed, while you feel cheated and lied to.....
I personally like p2p games, I feel it give them more money to make me more content, if GW2 feels they can make me quality content with b2p, sell expansions, and a vanity cash shop, then more power to them if they can do it...If it becomes p2w, then I am sure I will of gotten my money out of it, but I would say bye....They say it won't be....No guarantees in life, stuff I think is the best ever, some people loathe...

I was talking only about the frequency of expansions at that point. If the OP is worried about expansions coming too frequently, then it might be of interest to know that one of the problems they had in GW1 was that they thought the 6 month timeframe wasn't enough for what they wanted to do.

I'm sorry, I just could not help myself. You know cause I totally believe that the game is going to be made of magical happy ponies, completely free with no intention of taking my money; for you see the truth is GW2 will singlehandedly create new jobs in the US, solve world hunger, cure AIDs, bring Micheal Jackson back from the dead, create peace in the Middle East, and of course prove once and for all there is a good christian God because we will all get free passes into heaven signed by the lead dev at A-net.
So thank you for saving me from my soul crushing disapointment when I find out that A-net is making a product to simply make money to keep their doors open. I was completely unaware.

Point well made, mate. Wasn't trying to degrade your argument. Simple side-thought.
Charr: Outta my way. Human: What's your problem? Charr: Your thin skin.
Guild Wars is taking so long because they are making all the expansion packs at once.
This is not Guild Wars 1. This is not ArenaNet's first mmo. They no longer have to portray a name for themselves. This in now 2011 and businesses are more into making profits than ever.
It's only my Opinion, but I'm often right......The Original Guild Wars 2 will be short, more so for the hardcore fast levelers. You will find the next paid expansion in the stores within two weeks, then the third and the forth soon after. You will not save anything. After a year you will be scratching your head thinking " I just paid the same amount as if I paid for an mmo and all its monthly fees ".
My Grandma used to say :
Nothing is free !
If it looks to good, it probably is not !
It's hard to think that you'd be genuinely concerned over Anet releasing an expansion within 2 weeks. If you are, you're probably being cynical just to avoid being let down in the extreme case that this might actually be true. You know the game will not be free, so grandma is right, but that doesn't mean everybody else and their grandmothers are crooks.
If they were to pull a stunt like this, they'd have buried their reputation so fast it wouldn't even be funny. I don't see this coming. It'll be months (6 to 12?) before the first expansion. I didn't see it in my crystal ball, but that is what they were tentatively looking at. Things could change, but I find that rather unlikely.
You don't even have to buy the expansions to keep on playing the game. Not so with P2P games. B2P will hopefully strike the perfect balance between F2P (but with P2W cash shop) and P2P.
I'm sure that expansion packs will be released when they NEED to be released. Don't these credible companies perform a high level of monitoring over game-play to help them strategize when its time for an expansion? Two years of hyped up marketing for GW2, and you think they are gonna need to sell an expansion 2 weeks after release? Seriously ROFLMAO!
As for me. Hell, i'll pay for expansions -- as long as the fun continues. Bring on the expansions -- keep the game fresh and new and I'll pay-2-STAY!
Lots of expansions = lots of content => me a happy panda
Why is lots of content equal or greater than you being a happy panda?

No I'm not playing Asura :P
I hope they can put out one expansion per half year for around USD$30-40, so its cheaper than 6 month of sub fees, and you know you are getting certain content for a good price.
How much WoW could a WoWhater hate, if a WoWhater could hate WoW? As much WoW as a WoWhater would, if a WoWhater could hate WoW.

Pardon my English as it is not my 1st language
I have alot of patience for this mmo, it doesnt have to be perfect, no mmo is.
But i have seen enough why this is the next gen mmo to play.
Anets pvp system is unmatched, they produce epic pvp.
Anets pve is looking damn epic to, while iam always doin gpvp in my mmo's GW2 i will do alot of pve if not all.
This alone is something i have never been willin gto doas i cant stand pve scripted stuff.
I hope it will launch in februari if not then SW can hold my attention .
with 1500+ pve events i think we will be busy long enough + they got some sort of dungeons who can be played at 2 modes.
Feels like thats alot of content for a 55 euro :P
Well, sure
